Day-to-Day
The Research Associate will collect face and body data gathered from large-scale capture domes and VR headsets by:
Staging and setting-up equipment for the study, which may include engaging with engineering, external equipment vendors, internal and external safety evaluators, and the research study team to ensure the equipment is set up properly.
Conducting the study, including participant coaching and interaction, operating complex, experimental capture systems, and debriefing with team leadership as necessary
Performing basic troubleshooting of capture systems (hardware and software) and escalate any bugs or issues using internal tools.
Providing research study support, including data collection, tracking of participants, and tracking of equipment and procedures.
Contributing to and/or update existing documentation.
Serving as a participant for studies and being captured in various systems as needed.
Completing project work related to captures such as recording and updating capture scripts.
Attending all required trainings, meetings, and standups
Providing feedback for process improvement areas
Expectations for Success
To be able to successfully execute on the day-to-day responsibilities above, the Research Associate is expected to:
Review SOPs and other any other relevant documentation and consult with the responsible Lead for any questions or clarifications in advance of the capture.
Stay up to date with process and SOP changes for frequently used systems.
Arrive on-time for captures and allow additional time, if needed, to review unfamiliar systems or SOPs and for operational set up
Arrive on-time and prepared with relevant information or materials for all required trainings, meetings, and standups.
Approach each capture and project with ability and flexibility. Be prepared to quickly pivot to new tasks, approaches to capture, or steps in documented processes to keep the team moving forward, even during blocking events.
Provide a comfortable and professional experience for participants (both internal and external) through all interactions including providing updates and breaks during troubleshooting or other capture-blocking events.
Ensure highest quality and accuracy of data captured by maintaining a sterile and distraction-free capture environment.
Escalate any issues to the Engineer Team and properly documenting, in-detail, the nature of the issue.
Address any areas for improvement of the capture process in scheduled meetings and/or via internal feature request tools.
Identify (or partner with the Team Lead(s)) projects and tasks that can be completed during larger blocking events and during planned and unplanned system downtime.

Compensation: $22/hour

The Research Scientist will be responsible for technical management of this complex and multidisciplinary effort. This role is not only technical-it is strategic, collaborative, and deeply translational. The successful candidate will guide the development of novel software tools for organ blueprint generation and robotic print pathing, oversee the construction and operation of multi-modal bioprinting platforms, and lead the design of bioreactors capable of sustaining organ maturation for up to 30 days. In addition to technical execution, this role demands leadership in mentoring and team development. The Research Scientist will supervise and support graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and technical staff across multiple institutions, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and scientific rigor. They will serve as a key liaison between CMU and partner organizations including the University of Washington, Mayo Clinic, FluidForm Bio, and the University of Pittsburgh, ensuring seamless integration of efforts across computational modeling, fabrication, and preclinical testing. The program culminates in the in vivo validation of bioprinted liver constructs in rodent and porcine models, including IND-enabling studies. As a Development Chemist, you will join PPG's Protective and Marine Coatings segment as part of the Atmospheric protection, Flooring, Ultra-fast Cure Product Development team. The position is posted in Cheswick, PA but the team will be moving to Allison Park, PA in early 2026. Based at our Coatings Innovation Center in Allison Park, PA, you will support R&D efforts and contribute to the development of innovative coating products.
Working under the guidance of an experienced chemist, you will be involved in formulation development, spray/brush/roller application, and testing both commercial and experimental coatings. Your responsibilities will include contributing to and conducting experiments, generating data, assisting in data analysis, preparing samples, and communicating results to lead chemists and technical leadership and marketing teams.
You will also help troubleshoot lab equipment and ensure all work complies with safety protocols and corporate standards.

Key Responsibilities

A New Era for the Aluminum Industry

The ELYSIS™ technology is the greatest breakthrough in the aluminum industry since its beginnings in 1886. Work is underway now to further develop this revolutionary new way to produce aluminum, eliminating carbon dioxide and all other greenhouse gas emissions from the traditional smelting process.
The ELYSIS process eliminates the use of carbon anodes, replacing those with proprietary materials. It is the first industrial process that emits oxygen as its by-product and has the potential to transform an entire industry.
In 2018, two international aluminum producers, Alcoa and Rio Tinto, came together to form the ELYSIS joint venture with the provincial government of Quebec. With support from the Canadian Government and Apple, the technology is progressing and is currently being designed to support the construction of new smelters or retrofits.
ELYSIS is headquartered in Montreal, with Technology Research & Development locations in Alma, Quebec, (Canada), in Jonquiere, Quebec, (Canada), in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, (United States), and in France.
Commercial quality metal produced by ELYSIS during the ongoing R&D process is already being used by Apple in a variety of products (The 16-inch MacBook Pro and the iPhone SE); Ab InBEV (cans); Audi (e-tron GT wheels produced by the RONAL Group), and Corona (cans).

About the location
The ELYSIS US Research & Development facility is located in the Alcoa Technical Center (ATC) in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. Located near Pittsburgh, the carbon-free smelting process was first developed at ATC, where a dedicated team is working to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future.
About the Role
As the R&D Technician I at Alcoa Technical Center (ATC) in New Kensington, PA, you will be an integral member of the research and development team, responsible for conducting experiments, installing and commissioning new equipment, and recording and documenting results and observations systematically and completely in laboratory notebooks and computer databases. This role will be part of a pilot-scale development team, focusing on manufacturing and testing advanced proprietary materials for the development of innovative technology.
Key Activities / Responsibilities:
Manufacture powders and components and prepare and test samples using laboratory analytical equipment and methods, consisting of LECO chemical analysis, physical measurements, Archimedes density, and various other analytical equipment
Conduct a variety of laboratory experiments to support technological development
Collect, organize, and report data to engineering/management personnel
Install, setup, troubleshoot and maintain new and existing equipment and processes as needed
Prepare and test samples using laboratory analytical equipment consisting of LECO chemical analysis, density measurements, dimensional measurements, and others.
A diverse set of skills including strong attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with a team.
Willingness to learn and grow as part of a dynamic research and development environment
Responsible for supporting operational tasks to meet project requirements including, but not limited to, material batching and mixing, powder processing (milling and spray drying), forming (die presses), furnace and kiln loading/unloading
Become knowledgeable about Alcoa EHS standards, policies, and tools to ensure that safety protocols are being followed accordingly.
About you

Prior experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment, preferred.
Ability to perform material handling, weighing, completing process steps in sequence, and documenting process data.

We are seeking a motivated Research Associate to join our team to work on cutting-edge "Reasoning Reward Models" (RRMs). The purpose of this role is to help move beyond traditional scalar reward signals by developing models that generate natural language insights to explain human preferences. The intern will assist in implementing pipelines that bridge structured logical reasoning (e.g., Math) and open-ended human reasoning (e.g., Medical), ultimately contributing to new methods for Large Language Model (LLM) post-training and alignment.
Core Responsibilities:
Train Reasoning Reward Models using Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) and Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) to generate natural-language insights for Math and Medical tasks.
Implement insight-based post-training mechanisms, specifically "Behavioral Priming" and "Insight Exhibition Rewards," to align models with interpretable reasoning criteria.
Develop and implement software prototypes, algorithms, and data pipelines to support ongoing research projects.
Execute experimental workflows and simulations, ensuring accurate data collection and logging.
Analyze experimental results and metrics to identify trends, errors, or areas for optimization.
Document technical processes, codebases, and research findings to ensure reproducibility and knowledge transfer.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant tools, libraries, and best practices in software engineering and research.
