Develop and validate in vivo and in vitro model systems; oversee animal preparation, surgical procedures (survival and non-survival), post-operative care, and sample collection in accordance with IACUC, AALAS, and GLP (21 CFR 58) standards.

Responsibilities Include:
Conduct laboratory techniques including aseptic cell culture, plasmid preparation, electrophoresis, enzyme digestion, cell transfection, egg inoculation and harvest, generation of vaccine stocks, and QC testing.
Analyze molecular data associated with virus replication, innate immune response, host challenge, and pathogenesis.
Cloning or synthesizing the HA and NA genes into CDC-provided/approved reverse genetics vectors compatible for virus rescue and preparing high-quality plasmids in compliance with GLP regulations.
Perform laboratory research to determine the optimal HA and NA constructs before rescuing each of the GLP-CVV.
Perform a hemagglutination assay (HA) using turkey red blood cells to confirm the GLP-CVV stock.
Perform an Egg Infectious Dose 50 (EID50) assay to confirm the GLP-CVV stock meets a minimum infectious titer that will be communicated when the information/materials are provided by CDC.
Maintain GLP standards and accurate research documentation.
Develop draft Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) in strict accordance with FDA's 21 CFR 58 GLP regulations, including quality assurance qualification of all laboratory reagents.
Prepare Batch Production Records (BPRs) and other quality documents.
Review SOPs, BPRs, study reports, and all other related documents.
Ensure laboratory operations, inventories, reagent management, and equipment calibration/maintenance always comply.
Work with a great deal of independence in achieving research goals.
Keep up to date with the latest literature; participate in group meetings to discuss findings.
Willingness to work in teams, including those in the Disease Intervention & Prevention Program, Quality Control, and Quality Assessment teams, and with national and international collaborators.

Work Duties:
Collects, prepares, analyzes and evaluates specimens from mice and NHPs.
Processes blood for PBMC collection and bronchoalveolar lavage samples from mice and NHPs.
Prepares drug dosages for treatment of mice and NHPs.
Operates laboratory equipment, contributes to laboratory maintenance.
Orders lab supplies, keeps inventory of samples and reagents.
Assists in small animal surgery and necropsies.
Prepares media plates, counts bacterial CFUs.
Participates in training sessions and workshops as needed.
Prepares for animal necropsies: labelling of tubes, coordination with BSL3 staff and veterinarians.

Our Ideal Candidate:
1 - 2 years' experience in standard lab techniques such as preparation of PBMCs from blood, processing animal tissues, preparation of growth media, autoclaving reagents.

A bachelor's degree or higher in biology, biomedical sciences.

We are currently looking for a FOOD & BEVERAGE APPLICATIONS SCIENTIST to join our growing team in San Antonio!
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for providing scientific expertise to routine laboratory service clientele, contract research customers, and FSNS personnel. Has regular communication and interaction with each of these parties. Assists with evaluation of new or improved methods for analyzing food products and environmental samples for continual expansion and enhancement of laboratory service offerings. Carries out all aspects of contract research services including proposal generation, budgeting, coordinating, executing, reporting results, and billing of contract research projects. Provides on-site client assistance for troubleshooting purposes or contract research projects as needed.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as a key scientific resource for food safety-related inquiries and concerns from laboratory clients, including both routine and contract research service customers.
Provide on-site and remote support to clients for troubleshooting food safety issues and interpreting test results, with a focus on enhancing product quality and compliance.
Collaborate directly with clients to understand testing needs, propose research solutions, and guide them through the contract research process including budgeting, execution, reporting, and billing.
Maintain strong technical competence through continuous learning in food safety science, industry trends, and regulatory updates (FDA, USDA, FSMA, etc.).
Translate scientific information into actionable recommendations and clearly communicate complex data to customers in a way that builds trust and supports decision-making.
Prepare and deliver technical presentations to clients, industry groups, and internal teams with an emphasis on food safety trends, contamination risks, and mitigation strategies.
Assist in evaluating and validating new or improved testing methodologies related to food safety and environmental monitoring.
Contribute to marketing and sales efforts by developing technical collateral, participating in customer visits, and supporting business development initiatives.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior staff and assist with team coordination, as needed.
Participate in industry events, scientific conferences, and trade shows to network with clients and stay current on developments in food science and safety.
Support internal departments during high demand periods or special projects, maintaining a collaborative, flexible approach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in Food Science & Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field preferred; M.S. minimum requirement.
Proven experience working in food safety testing, regulatory compliance, or quality assurance roles.
Strong working knowledge of industry-standard testing protocols (USDA MLG, FDA BAM, AOAC, etc.).
Demonstrated experience in customer-facing roles, including presenting technical information and solving client-specific issues.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Hands-on knowledge of aseptic technique, lab instrumentation, and analytical methodologies used in food testing laboratories.
