Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:

Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.

The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level BorderPatrolAgent opportunities.
Other Requirements:
Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the BorderPatrolAgent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).
Veterans' Preference: You may also be eligible for an excepted service Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA). The age restriction does not apply if you are Veterans' Preference eligible.
Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. BorderPatrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. BorderPatrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. BorderPatrolAgents will be provided training to become proficient in the Spanish language at the Academy.

Essential Duties
Patrol University buildings and grounds to deter crime, prevent theft, trespass, vandalism, or violations of the General Laws of Massachusetts.
Respond to, investigate and properly document general and emergency calls for service and violations of University regulations, and/or General Laws.
Make arrests and/or refer incidents to Student Affairs for disciplinary action, when appropriate; investigate accidents; provide direction and information to the general public; promote good police-community relations through scheduled activities and routine interaction with the University community.
Provide transportation services including on campus personal safety escorts, non-emergency medical transports to area medical facilities and other transportation duties as assigned.
Testify in court, University judicial hearings and any other process as deemed necessary. Investigate crimes and other incidents in conjunction with department detectives, as assigned.
Perform any other duties as assigned, which are necessary to enhance public safety on campus and protect the lives, safety and property of the students, faculty, staff and guests of the University.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must possess the following:
A minimum of a High School diploma/GED.
Ability to receive and retain certification from the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission authorizing employment as a law enforcement officer.
Hold and maintain an unrestricted United States driver's license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley's insurance carrier.
Hold and maintain a license to carry a firearm (larger capacity) in MA in accordance with MGL CH140 sec 131.
Be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
The ability to pass a physical and psychological examination.
The ability to pass a stringent background investigation.
Completion of a police academy within one year of appointment.
Preferred Requirements
Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or a Bachelor's degree (in any related field).
An honorable discharge after completion of a tour of service in a branch of the United States Military.
Graduate of a MA Police Training Council Academy (or approved equivalent from another state).
Work Environment
Officers will spend the majority of their shift on active patrol responding to calls for service, performing building checks of buildings and other areas and to conduct field interviews and investigations.
Officers will be exposed to all types of weather conditions and may have to spend extended periods of time in such conditions.
Officers may be exposed to loud noises when working extra duty at concerts and construction sites.
Officers may be exposed to hazardous materials in the course of their work. Sources of these may be accidents involving such materials, such as a chemical spill, inadvertent exposure, such as through a fire, or deliberate exposure during an assault.
Officers may also be exposed to blood-borne pathogens in the line of duty when responding to an incident where medical aid is rendered, accidental contact while detaining a combative individual who is sick or injured, while conducting a search of a sick or injured party, or deliberate exposure by a party.
Officers may be required to work up to sixteen hours, consecutively. Forced and voluntary overtime occurs as the need for additional coverage is required.
Officers are subject to mandatory call-in during times when public safety concerns arise on campus.
Officers are required to be able to perform physical activity while on duty. Officers walk, run, patrol in vehicles and on bicycles. They are required to reach, lift, and stand on their feet for long periods of time.
Officers are trained in the use of defensive tactics, including hand control techniques, striking implements and chemical sprays and must be physically fit enough to safely and effectively employ such techniques should the need arise.
Officers may be required to place themselves in dangerous situations where there may be a possibility of death or serious bodily injury.
Officers are required to work irregular shifts and hours due to the 24-hour nature of police work.

Job Details:
Performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of persons and property; enforcing applicable policies, rules and regulations of Cambridge Health Alliance and applicable federal, state and local laws, to prevent losses due to accidents and incidents.
Investigates crimes and other violations of Massachusetts laws and ordinances.
Makes arrests and sets up appropriate complaints for the courts for those in violation of the law.
Assists in the escorting of deceased patients.
Observe and detain patients who are in crisis and deemed in need of special services.
Investigates individuals or situations that appear to be of a suspicious nature.
Provides safety escorts as needed
Provides for the safety and security of all patients, visitors and staff.
Qualifications:
Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or two years of prior law enforcement experience, or two years of military experience with an honorable discharge.
One year prior experience in security, loss prevention and/or criminal justice.
Basic knowledge of security and law enforcement practices.
Able to produce concise, accurate and well written reports.
Able to work independently or as part of a team
Possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts drivers license.
CPR Certificate/First Responder Certificate

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Safety and the Duty Shift Sergeant, the University Police Officer I will patrol University buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas and enforce the Commonwealth of Massachusetts laws and University regulations therein. Project an image of willing and helpful community service in the interest of campus security, crime prevention, and the overall well being of the general community. University Police Officers are expected to follow instructions of Public Safety Daily Reports and must be thoroughly familiar with the Brandeis University Campus Police Department Manual.
The hourly rate for this position is $32.62 and is a 40 hour work week.
Key Responsibilities:
* Patrol University buildings, grounds and adjacent areas at regular intervals. Protect the campus from trespassers, thefts, damage or injury to persons and property. Inspect interior and exterior of all University buildings; extinguish unnecessary light; secure exterior door; lock offices, laboratories and related rooms found unlocked, unless otherwise requested. Report all irregularities to the appropriate authorities. Respond immediately to all intrusion/fire alarms; investigate causes for same and perform necessary related follow-up responsibilities dictated by circumstances at scene and as outlined in written fire alarm response procedures. 40%
* Exercise police powers in the detection and apprehension of law violators in a judicious manner, exercising discretion and good judgment at all times; investigate all complaints and refer to the appropriate supervisory personnel as deemed necessary. Prepare detailed, clearly written investigative reports of all incidents taking place during tour of duty. 20%
* Enforce University vehicle parking and traffic regulations. Investigate vehicular accidents and provide required documentation. Control vehicular and pedestrian traffic entering/exiting campus, so as to promote maximum safety. Exercise control over limited parking facilities and exclude unauthorized and undesirable parties from campus properties. 15%
* May perform overtime campus police detail duties as requested during University social/athletic functions. May provide emergency and/or courtesy transportation for students, faculty and staff. 15%
* When assigned to dispatch duty, acknowledge all incoming personal visit/telephone reports at the communication center. Handle all inquiries and/or dispatch patrol cars for action. Control UHF (two-way) communications network at the communications center repeater console, linking the Public Safety office and the patrol cruisers. Monitor alarms and CCTV and dispatch patrol cars for appropriate action. 10%
Job Requirements:

Required: Successful completion of the Commonwealth P.O.S.T certified academy. Must be able to obtain and retain a Massachusetts Class A license to carry a firearm and successfully complete firearms qualifications per Department standards. First Aid and CPR certification.

This is an entry level sworn position performing responsible and visible work in law enforcement to preserve the peace, protect persons and property in the city, and enforce federal and state laws, and city ordinances and by-laws. ACCOUNTABILITY: Works under the general supervision of a First Line or Mid-Level Supervisory Officer. Work is performed in accordance with extensive established rules, regulation, and instructions from superior officers who review work through reports, conferences, and observation of efficiency and effectiveness of completed work.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT:

Serve or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately when assigned.

Remain within the assigned patrol area throughout the tour of duty except when a police emergency as defined by policy necessitates a temporary absence has been authorized.
INVESTIGATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct thorough investigations of all offenses and incidents within the area of assignment as assigned. Collect evidence and record data which will aid in the identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders, as well as the recovering of property.
Maintain proficiency in latent fingerprint identification and recovery, photography, and investigative techniques such as interview and interrogation methods and procedures.
Ensure the proper packaging, marking and securing of all evidence and property coming into police custody.
Prepare affidavits, warrants and court complaints as necessary to the investigation.
Perform other duties as assigned by proper authority.
Individuals selected as entry level police officers are not required to have all of the training, or to have developed all of the skills necessary to perform the functions of the position immediately upon selection. Many of the skills and abilities will be learned over the probationary period of employment, while other capabilities will be assessed during the hiring process.
In order to function independently as a police officer, personnel shall be required to successfully develop the following knowledge, skills and abilities as part of the first year of probationary employment.
A working knowledge of police techniques, methods and procedures; knowledge of Federal, State and City laws and ordinances; knowledge of Court decisions relative to law enforcement; knowledge of community geography and demographics.

Certified in New Hampshire by Police Standards and Training as Police Officer upon appointment or within six months of appointment. Valid motor vehicle operator's license. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
The hiring process for this position will consist of a review of the applications and resumes, a written test, in person interview, a thorough background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological screening, a medical examination with drug screening and a physical fitness test.
