Duty location impacts pay rates; locality pay for federal law enforcement is higher in some locations than others. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with a grade level progression from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete 52 weeks in the lower grade level.
All Border Patrol Agents may select from an array of federal employment benefits that include health and insurance plans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan that is similar to traditional and ROTH 401(k) offerings. *Recruitment Incentive* Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (as defined in 5 CFR 575.102) will be offered up to a $20,000 incentive. Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:
ยท Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
ยท Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions to include using infrared scopes during night operations.
ยท Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
ยท Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
ยท Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission.
Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
ยท Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
ยท Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
ยท Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
ยท Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
ยท Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
ยท Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).

Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. Border Patrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. Border Patrol Agents will be provided training to become proficient in the Spanish language at the Academy.

3. Physical Agility Examination: Designed to measure an applicant's knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete exercises that replicate some aspect of the job. The examination is timed and includes the following physical examinations:

* 25 push-ups (2:00 Minutes)
* 50 air squats (2:00 Minutes)
* 500-yard run (2:00 Minutes)
Physical Agility Examination Waiver: Applicants who have participated in the POST Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) at an agency within the State of California within 6 months of the application may waive the physical agility examination portion of the examination process. Applicants must submit the official verification letter of test results AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION by uploading the document online during the application process. The minimum passing score required is 320.
4. Oral Interview: Upon successful completion of the written and physical agility assessments, applicants will be scheduled for an oral interview. This interview is designed to evaluate such job-related factors, such as motivation, interpersonal skills, problem-solving ability, use of sound judgement and oral communication skills. The interview is conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board who will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. This interview is typically scheduled within two weeks of the written and physical agility test dates. (Weighted 100%).
Final Testing and Final Appointment
Applicants who pass the written, physical, and oral test will be placed on the continuous Deputy Sheriff-Recruit eligibility list for twelve months. Rank on the list is determined by the oral board test score and any veteran's credit for which individual competitors may qualify. Applicants' scores are grouped into Certification Bands. Scores between 83 to 100 are placed in Band A, scores between 77 to 82.99 are placed in Band B, and scores between 70-76.99 are placed in Band C. Candidates are moved on into the background process from the list. Typically, the Sheriff's Office administers three Basic Academies per year.
Veteran's Preference Credits
Veterans who have received an honorable discharge and disabled veterans may be allowed an additional 5% of their total earned score (providing the exam is otherwise successfully completed). To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a DD214 that indicates the applicant received an honorable discharge or proof of disability ATTACHED TO THEIR APPLICATION AT THE TIME OF FILING.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
CONVICTION HISTORY
During the background process, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County.
DISQUALIFYING FACTORS
In addition to the definition of disqualifying criminal acts as defined by Cal. Gov. Code ยง 1029, applicants who have had their POST certification suspended, revoked, or voluntarily surrendered it, due to having engaged in "Serious Misconduct" as defined by Cal. Pen. Code ยง 13510.8 are ineligible to be employed as a peace officer in the State of California.
The hiring process takes approximately two to three months to complete depending on each applicant's individual background.
DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Santa Rosa Junior College District Police Department includes sworn Police Officers, police dispatchers, non-sworn Community Service Officers, and Cadets. The California Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) accredited this Police Department in 1988. SRJC has approximately 20,000 students, faculty, and staff a semester combined with multiple sites across Sonoma County.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. Incumbents routinely perform approximately 80% of the duties below.
1. Patrols District property, surrounding areas, and facilities utilized by the District by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to deter, locate, discover, and apprehend persons committing crimes.
2. Responds to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other emergencies.
3. Practices de-escalation, crisis intervention, communication, defensive tactics, arrest techniques and other alternatives to assess situations fairly and resolve conflict reasonably at a level proportional to the offense and the totality of the circumstances.
4. Reprimands, detains, cites, and/or arrests members of the public for violations of the law. Transports subjects to detoxification, mental health, or medical facilities, or books into jail. Provides mutual aid and assistance to other law enforcement agencies as requested and/or circumstances dictate. Serves warrants and subpoenas.
5. Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, criminal incidents, hazardous incidents, vehicle accidents, and deaths. Collects and maintains evidence, interrogates suspects, and interviews victims, complainants, and witnesses.
6. Prepares criminal reports, responds to subpoenas, and testifies in court.
7. Operates the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) and other law enforcement computer systems.
8. Manages caseload of registered sex offenders, including initial registration, follow up, and coordination with the California Department of Justice.
9. Provides traffic and crowd control, responds to life threatening situations, and provides non-police related support services.
10. Implements district emergency preparedness plan including emergency evacuation plans. Secures perimeters and coordinates fire, medical, communication, utilities, and other emergency services.
11. May collect and transport monies from parking permit machines and meters. May perform minor repairs to parking meters and permit machines.
12. Responds to questions from students, employees, and the general public regarding laws, ordinances, incidents, or services.
13. Prepares and maintains records, reports, and files. Provides documentation to appropriate state, federal, and local agencies.
14. May be given special assignments including cadet coordinator, communications training or field training officer, certified instructor, and/or detective.
15. May provide training for department staff in such areas as defensive tactics, use of firearms, defensive driving, crowd control, use of chemical agents, and other specialized functions.
16. May serve as lead worker to other classified and short-term, non-continuing (STNC) employees within the department.
17. May supervise student employees.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates/incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications as detailed below, or file for equivalency. EDUCATION:

EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a POST Certified Police Academy provides applicants with the minimum experience for this classification.

This is both the entry level and the first safety class within the Police Officer series. Incumbents perform all duties required to effectively respond to and resolve situations encountered. Qualifications:
1. You must have a verifiable T-Score of 42 or higher that has been issued no earlier than one year before you submit this application. If you are in the process of acquiring a verifiable T-Score of 42.0 or higher on the P.O.S.T. Pellet-B examination, your T-Score must be provided to Human Resources no later than the date of your Information Session. It is your responsibility to locate an agency for the P.O.S.T. ADDITIONAL PAY INCENTIVES
HIRING BONUS: Newly hired Deputy Sheriffs may receive a signing bonus of up to $30,000, with the amount determined by their term of service. To qualify, proof of prior service must be submitted within 30 days of hire. Half of the bonus will be paid within the first 3 pay periods, and the remaining half will be paid after successful completion of the probation period or 12 months of employment, whichever comes first, for eligible at-will positions.
LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM: Applicants who attended and received a degree (Associate's or Bachelor's) consisting of a minimum of 60 credits/units at a regionally accredited school by the Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions are eligible to receive a payment up to $20,000 (or $30,000 if certified bilingual by Napa County) towards student loan(s). Loans must be existing loans, which the employee can prove they held as of their hire date and was borrowed while attending the accredited institution during the time the degree was earned. All payments will be made directly to the student loan lender once appropriate verifications have been made. In order to be eligible for this loan forgiveness, the employee must have completed five (5) years of satisfactory service with Napa County, without a break in service.
EMPLOYEE REFERRAL BONUS: County employees who refer a candidate for Deputy Sheriff Trainee will receive a recruitment bonus of $1,000 upon the successful completion of a one year probationary period. Employee's names must be listed on the candidate's application prior to submission.
EDUCATIONAL REIMBURSEMENT: County employees are eligible for reimbursement up to $1,500 per fiscal year for tuition and books upon successful completion of County approved college or university courses or other courses directly related to the candidate's job duties.
BILINGUAL PAY: For bilingual speaking skills, Deputy Sheriff Trainees are eligible to receive $60 for Level I and $80 for Level II, per pay period, upon the recommendation of the hiring manager.
RECRUITMENT PROCESS
1. Application review for minimum qualifications will be conducted on a periodic basis.
2. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications must attend the mandatory, in-person Information Session and Physical Agility Test (PAT). Applicants will receive a subsequent email invitation to sign up for the Information Session and Physical Agility Test once a date has been established by the Sheriff's Office. The Information Session will consist of a detailed discussion about the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position and the completion of a pre-background questionnaire.
The PAT will take place immediately after the information session. Physical Agility Test (PAT) scores from other agencies are not accepted, so please do not submit them.
The Physical Agility Test (PAT) will consist of the following:
* 32-foot dummy drag
* 500-yard run
* 6-foot solid wall climb
3. Applicants who successfully complete the Informational Session (including the pre-background questionnaire) and the Physical Agility Test, will be invited to participate in the Oral Panel Interviews. Candidates must have a verifiable T-Score of 42.0 or higher received by Human Resources by the time of their Information Session in order to participate in Oral Panel Interviews.
4. The dates for Oral Panel Interviews will be provided with advanced notice.

The successful candidate will attend the basic Police Academy to prepare and learn the duties and responsibilities for the position of Deputy Sheriff.
The class of Deputy Sheriff Trainee is the beginning of the career ladder of the law enforcement classes. The position is a non-sworn, civilian training classification to be used while incumbents are attending a certified Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Police Academy. The P.O.S.T. approved police academy, as described in and required by Section 832 of California Penal Code, consists of intensive instruction on law enforcement procedures combined with rigorous physical fitness training. Incumbents in this classification receive the same employee benefits as Deputy Sheriff with the exceptions that they will be placed in the miscellaneous retirement category until successful completion of a designated police academy, and as civilian employees, they will not be covered by Government Code Sections 4850 and 3300 through 3311. Upon satisfactory completion of academy training, incumbents will be sworn in as peace officers; placed in the Safety retirement category and appointed to the Deputy Sheriff I classification and begin a one (1) year probationary period.
ENTRY LEVEL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to provide proof of successful completion of a P.O.S.T. entry level law enforcement written exam with a minimum T-Score of 42 or above, by the time of the oral interview process.
Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D.
Must be able to provide proof of age requirement which is 21 years of age. Must be at least 20 1/2 years of age at the time of application.
Must be able to work holidays, weekends, graveyard shifts and irregular hours.
Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation and polygraph.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test and psychiatric evaluation.
