1912

La Mesa, CA, known as “The Jewel of the Hills” was established in 1912.

However, the city of La Mesa town that people recognize today was officially created and incorporated in 1912.

1940

After incorporation the young city grew steadily, reaching 3,925 residents by 1940.

1969

Formed in February 1969, the Friends have since incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization whose stated purpose is to promote, preserve, and support library services and patron needs through education and of communication with local libraries and the community.

1980

Post-World War II, La Mesa exemplified the exponential suburban growth of the region, expanding to the north and west of old downtown to accommodate 50,000 plus residents by 1980—all still attracted, as today, to the “Jewel of the Hills.”
