ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: The investigation begins with completion of a Personal History Statement and will include fingerprinting and a background interview. The investigation also includes checks of employment, police, financial, education, and military records and interviews with family members, neighbors, supervisors, co-workers, and friends. Findings are valid for 12 months. A polygraph examination will be conducted prior to your field investigation to confirm information obtained during the selection process. The processing guidelines for the polygraph examination may be revised periodically. All candidates will be processed according to the current guidelines, not the guidelines which were in place when they applied.
Any conviction by a state, the federal government, or a foreign government of a crime, the punishment for which would have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or the state prison (felony) will result in a disqualification. Note: Federal law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
PHYSICAL FITNESS QUALIFIER: In order to better prepare for the exam and the physical demands of the academy, you are required to complete the Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ). Your score on the PFQ is advisory. You must complete the PFQ at least once prior to appointment. You are welcome to retake the PFQ as many times as you like, and the score is valid for 12 months. If you score less than a 50 on the PFQ, you are strongly encouraged to attend the Candidate Advancement Program (CAP) more regularly and retake the PFQ. Being a part of CAP will significantly increase your success in the selection process and in the academy. CAP will also make transitioning to academy life much easier. If you currently live more than 150 miles away from the Los Angeles area, you should contact your mentor to arrange a PFQ while you are in town completing other test parts. MEDICAL EVALUATION: Consists of a thorough evaluation by a City physician. It is essential that you be in excellent health, with no conditions that would restrict your ability to safely perform the work of a Port Police Officer. A cardiac stress test may be required. To remain medically qualified, you must maintain your good health during the period following the medical examination. Medical examination results are valid for up to 12 months, at the discretion of the City's medical staff. Part of the medical evaluation includes a PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION by a City psychologist. This evaluation consists of written tests and an individual oral interview. You will be evaluated on the psychological factors related to successful job performance to determine if you are suited for the difficult and stressful occupation of Port Police Officer. The results of the oral psychological evaluation are valid for 12 months. Your written psychological tests are valid for up to 24 months, at the discretion of the City's psychological staff.
HEALTH/PHYSICAL CONDITION: You must be in excellent health, with no conditions that would restrict your ability to safely complete Academy training and perform police work for the Harbor Department. Your weight (body fat content) must be appropriate for height and build and you should be in excellent physical condition.
VISION: Your uncorrected distance vision must not exceed 20/70 in either eye and the best eye must be at least 20/40 and wearing eyeglasses you must have corrected vision to at least 20/30 in each eye. If soft contact lenses are worn, they must have been worn for at least one month and vision must be at least 20/30 in each eye tested wearing the contact lenses and there is no uncorrected distant vision requirement. If a LASIK procedure (refractive surgery) was performed, vision must be at least 20/30 in each eye. In addition, candidates must be able to accurately and quickly name colors, and must be free from other visual impairments that would restrict the ability to perform law enforcement duties.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SUBSTANCE SCREENING: Because this class has been designated as safety sensitive, in accordance with City Policy, a drug and alcohol screening test may be required prior to appointment and during employment.
CERTIFICATION AND APPOINTMENT: Before you can be hired as a Port Police Officer, you must successfully complete all required steps.
ACADEMY TRAINING: You will be required to attend a six-month, 40-hour per week training and orientation program, during which you will receive full pay.
ASSIGNMENTS: Employees will receive regular appointments to the class of Port Police Officer and will begin an eighteen-month probationary period, during which time employees must successfully complete a comprehensive training program including a basic police recruit school approved by POST; a Field Training Program; and any other training required by law or the Department.

Passing Score for the Qualifying Written Test
The passing score for the qualifying multiple-choice test will be determined by Personnel Department staff after the qualifying multiple-choice test is administered. Consideration will be given to the number of candidates taking the test and the existing and anticipated number of vacancies, such that there are a sufficient number of eligible on the list to satisfy current and future vacancies for the next two years. Therefore, the passing score for the qualifying multiple-choice test may be set either above or below 70%.
The examination score will be based entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Safety Focus; Initiative; Conscientiousness, Customer Service; Teamwork; Oral Communication; and Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: principles of electricity and electronic theory including DC/AC; common sources of trouble in communications systems and various communication systems problems; methods of installing, servicing, rebuilding, and repairing communications systems; electronic test equipment, tools, and materials used in the construction, servicing, installation, and repair of communications systems; radio communication systems; voice network systems sufficient to troubleshoot, install, and/or repair; subnet masks; safety precautions and hazards in working on or installing electronic and communications equipment; and the ability to understand, prepare, and work from communications plans, schematic, diagrams, sketches, drawings, and cable records; configure, test, and evaluate hardware; mount equipment on towers and vehicles; test and adjust RF Microwave/base and mobile radio receivers and transmitters to system specifications and/or FCC rules and regulations; differentiate wire and cable colors; identify faults in data cabling; use computers to configure or process information on data network equipment; use and interpret network testers, software and cloud based testers, and protocol analyzers; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Multiple-Choice Test Score Banding
The scores in the multiple-choice test will be reported in bands that reflect candidates' performance in the multiple-choice test. Seniority credit for promotional candidates and veteran credit for open candidates who attain a final passing score will be added to the banded scores of each candidate. The specific range of each band will be determined by Personnel Department staff after the multiple-choice test is administered. A Welder performs skilled heating, welding, plasma cutting, and brazing, using arc, flux core, MIG, and TIG welding on a variety of modern metals in a shop, in a generating station, or in the field, using oxyacetylene and electric welding equipment; layout and fabrication work, using manual and power shears, hydraulic punch presses, notchers, benders, drill presses, disc sanders, bench and box breaks, rollers, and a variety of hand tools; reads blueprints, and maintains equipment, performing minor mechanical repairs.
NOTE:
A Welder may weld at various heights, including working on scaffolding, in excavations, boats, barges, container cranes, on fuel tanks, confined spaces, and in other hazardous locations; and may be required to wear a full or half-face respirator mask under certain working conditions.

A Building Operating Engineer operates, monitors, and performs maintenance on high pressure gas or oil fired boilers, gas or steam turbines, energy recovery boilers and heat exchangers, other heating systems, and their auxiliaries in supplying steam or high temperature hot water for space heating and similar purposes; operates, monitors, and performs maintenance on large tonnage capacity chillers used for air-conditioning, including all auxiliary related equipment such as condensers, cooling towers, pumps, and air compressors; performs water treatment tests and studies; monitors and maintains other building service equipment; operates and programs computer based building automation systems, trouble-shoot program control sequence of operation, operates and maintains various types of refrigeration and air conditioning air handling units, operates and monitors computer based lighting control systems; responds and investigates building tenant service requests; tests and monitors fire life and safety alarm systems; maintains the building operability while optimizing equipment performance for efficient energy management and energy reduction.

ANNUAL SALARY $62,305 to $91,078 Appointments from the eligible list are made at the lowest pay grade. Per Diem appointments from the eligible list are hired at an hourly rate ($29.84).
