The Design Manager - Technical Focus is responsible for leading and managing the design process across multiple projects with a strong emphasis on technical excellence, constructability, and coordination. To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 10+ years of experience in Construction Inspection for Heavy Civil and Transportation construction.
What you'll be doing:
Direct, schedule, and supervise inspection staff on construction assignments
Complete inspection services and documentation as required by project assignments
Track project budgets and schedules
Review and approve monthly invoices
Complete project records as required
Coordinate and communicate with clients and contractors
Assist the State Operations Manager with marketing and business development tasks as needed
What you need to have:
B.S. in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent
10+ years of experience in Construction Inspection for Heavy Civil and Transportation construction
VDOT Experience is preferred
PE preferred
Must be willing to travel on a routine basis to field offices and project sites
Experience in Bridge and Highway construction projects with demonstrated knowledge of contractor means and methods
Knowledge and understanding of project controls, including CPM scheduling, cost estimating, contract administration, and change order and claims analysis
Demonstrated skills in negotiating, coordinating and directing work of subcontractors, and in developing strong working relationships with general contractor personnel, subcontractors, inspectors, and other related parties
Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines.

We are currently searching for an experienced Natural Gas Project Manager to support our Natural Gas Team. This position may be located in any of our Volkert offices.
To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field (Mechanical, Structural, or Industrial Engineering).
The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $130,000, depending upon experience.
What you'll be doing:
Lead multidisciplinary teams in the design and implementation of natural gas infrastructure projects
Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and resource plans
Manage permitting processes with local, state, and federal agencies
Prepare and review technical drawings, specifications, and construction procedures
Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies
Interface with stakeholders including municipalities, landowners, and regulatory bodies
Support emergency response and on-call supervision as needed
Assist in capital and operational budget planning
Manage vendor relationships
Mentor junior staff and contribute to training programs
What you need to have:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field (Mechanical, Structural, or Industrial Engineering)
10+ years of experience in natural gas infrastructure or civil project management
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, but not required based on degree of relevant experience
Strong knowledge of permitting, pipeline design, and construction techniques
Proficiency in project management software and CAD tools
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills

The Construction Inspector/Field Technician is an integral part of the construction management team and will work under the guidance of the Project Leader (Resident Engineer).
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducting inspections, scheduling, and oversight of heavy highway structural projects.
Solve technical problems and steward solutions through the delivery process.
Responsible for monitoring contractor conformance to quality, performance, and specifications for assigned construction activities.
Performs daily field inspections and maintains inspection records.
Assists in the completion of reports.
Keeps resident engineer informed of workload and any daily activities.
Is active in technical societies.
Proactively interacts with the contractor to track crew work and equipment on the project.
Actively observes and acts in an appropriate manner related to safety.
Field work required, which could include nights and weekends.
Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
A 2-year technical degree or experience in the trades. General engineering knowledge of staging, structural construction, electrical construction, utility construction, roadway construction, and bridge construction.
Extensive use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and construction management databases/tracking software is required for this role.
Ability to obtain certifications for material sampling/testing for aggregates, concrete, asphalt, grading, etc. (ACI, NICET, or state certifications)
Ability to obtain certifications for inspection of roadways, bridges, coatings, etc. (NICET or state certifications)
Valid driver's license.
