Work-based learning for medical, industrial and other fields is one of the benefits of an education at Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) in Summit, Mississippi. Career training at SMCC is offered in such fields as Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Cosmetology, Health Information Technology, Practical Nursing and Web Development. Students in these and other professional training programs have the option to take an internship in their particular field in order to gain both credit and work experience. SMCC helps prepare students for employment in other ways as well. Its workforce training center provides coaching in professional workforce skills as well as job search assistance. SMCC also has comprehensive academics in the Liberal Arts, Humanities, Fine Arts, and Social and Natural Sciences. Such academic programs are designed for those who want to eventually get their bachelor's degree. Many SMCC students do, in fact, transfer to state and private four-year schools. While SMCC has an open admissions policy, there are certain requirements including submission of an application and transcripts. Certain programs such as Nursing may also have additional requirements. Tuition is lower for in-state residents and financial aid is available to those who qualify.
