Responsibilities
* Machining work via work orders, engineering drawings, materials, specifications, reference planes, locations of surfaces, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
* Plan and expedites orders for stock and verifies receipt.
* Set up machine, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, cutter compensation; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part program. Make proper installations and adjustments.
* Measure positions with first-run part, and sampling of work pieces; adhering to international standards.
* Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions.
* Troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
* Perform preventive maintenance requirements - follows manufacturer's instructions; troubleshoots malfunctions.
* Maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and needs in designated production and quality logs.
* Follow engineering planning, and accurately fill out and complete work orders.
* Support company Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Prevention Program.
* Successfully completes training as required to maintain efficiency on the job.
* Compliance with good housekeeping, quality, FOD, and safety procedures.
* Support other Aurora Flight Sciences sites as required.
* Performs other tasks as required by site leadership.
Minimum Requirements
* Education/experience typically acquired through basic education (e.g. high school diploma/GED).
* Proficient in the use of computers and equipment utilizing computer technology in the fabrication of aircraft parts.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU APL) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated second shift CNC Machinist to join our team! You will be instrumental in helping us manufacture the next generation spacecraft, undersea hardware, shipboard test systems and communication components. You will join a highly-professional, multi-disciplinary fabrication team that support programs varying from R&D prototype to flight hardware that meets AS9100 standards.
This position will provide the opportunity to learn and work on sophisticated programming, hardware, and equipment, such as; multi-axis CNC milling machines and routers, mill-turn machines, wire EDM, etc.
The work schedule for this position is from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, Monday through Friday (Second Shift). Second shift staff receives a 10% shift differential.
As a CNC Machinist you will be responsible for...
* Setting-up, programming, and operation of CNC and conventional machines for end-to-end manufacturing with minimal direction.
* Performing in-process inspection using precision measuring instruments (i.e., I.D and O.D. Micrometers, calipers, height gauges, etc.) to verify that customer hardware specifications and tolerances are met.
* Communicating and engaging with engineers and designers to collaborate about complex designs and provide fabrication insight to ensure project success.
* Achieving and maintaining proficiency with all applicable quality processes associated with assigned work.

Responsibilities

* Perform post-processing tasks on 3D printed parts, including trimming, sanding, and surface finishing

Independently set up and operate a variety of CNC and manual machines, including dual-spindle lathes and 5-axis mills, while maintaining required tolerances.
Perform machining operations such as milling, turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, broaching, and machining of metallic and nonmetallic materials.
Design and produce custom fixturing/workholding solutions; mount, align, and secure tooling and workpieces for optimal performance.
Technical Interpretation & Collaboration
Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T symbols, and technical specifications to determine machining methods, tooling requirements, and sequencing.
Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams to implement new processes, tooling concepts, and manufacturing technologies.
Contribute to continuous improvement efforts related to part machinability, process efficiency, and equipment utilization.
Quality Assurance & Documentation
Conduct in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools (micrometers, height gauges, CMMs, etc.).
Document all work activities clearly, completely, and in accordance with company procedures and traceability requirements.
Identify, troubleshoot, and communicate equipment, process, or quality issues promptly to supervisors or engineering staff.
Equipment Care & Safety
Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs to ensure optimal machine performance.
Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and hazardous-materials handling requirements.
Maintain a clean, organized work area in compliance with safety and 5S/lean workplace standards.
Assist in training new team members on machine operation, shop practices, and safety procedures.
Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Job Profile Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
The skills required for this role are typically demonstrated by 5 plus years of relevant experience.
Five (5) years of experience in a manufacturing environment with CNC programming and machine setup responsibilities.
Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX, or equivalent).
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve routine machine, tooling, and programming issues independently.
Experience using precision measuring devices and inspection tools.
Ability to collect, record, and organize technical data with a high degree of accuracy.
Familiarity with industrial safety practices, emergency procedures, and hazardous-materials handling.
Ability to work with common hand tools and basic shop equipment.
Competence with basic computer applications and electronic data entry systems.
Ability to push, pull, move, or lift at least 50 lbs.
Willingness to obtain relevant technical and safety certifications (e.g., OSHA-30, forklift, hazardous materials, OEM machine certifications).
Intermediate level knowledge in generating G-Code programs from CAM software.
Ability to read a blueprint.
Ability to verify dimensions are to print with basic metrology equipment ( calipers, micrometers, etc)
Hold tight tolerances regularly
Selects tooling for, determines feeds/speeds and optimizes cycle times
Able to train junior machinists
Ability to Setup CNC equipment with minimal supervision.
