As a Engineering Intern in the Signal department, you'll gain a deep understanding of railroad signaling systems, crucial for our operational safety and efficiency. By working on meaningful projects alongside industry experts, you'll apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges, enhancing the maintenance and innovation of our railway infrastructure. This immersive experience offers invaluable hands-on insights into the complexities of rail network operations. This is a full-time (40hrs/wk) position in a 24x7 operations environment, subject to on-call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Travel and Relocation is required for the summer. Candidates must be flexible with their location (as they could be moved depending on business needs), must have reliable transportation to and from work and travel up to 75% of the time.
Training will start with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking with leaders, followed by support on ongoing projects and practical field training at an assigned location.

Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct our signal infrastructure, along our right of way including wayside signals, highway grade crossings, and signal bungalows.
Plan/Schedule required maintenance and repairs and verify the quality of work completed.
Expand and update BNSF infrastructure and oversee projects that interact with BNSF property.
Project types include the expansion of BNSF terminals & hubs, central lines, facilities, the repair & replacement of structures, & oversight of public projects and utility crossings.
Responsible for the safety of their teams.
Manage the finances & schedules of their project and communication with project stakeholders.
Opportunity to shadow positions such as Signal Supervisor, Signal Construction Supervisor, Signal Maintainer, Signal Manager, and Director of Signal to gain boots on the ground experience.
Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
Does not require BNSF's assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and can safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions or in a shop, terminal, or field environment. Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, etc.), Construction Management, Business, OR a similar degree program from an accredited university.
Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience/military service, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing my undergraduate and/or graduate degree.
Have access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship to and from my assigned BNSF location.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Engineering, Business, Construction, or a related field.
Have or have held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.

Your Impact

ABOUT THE ROLE
This internship is for Summer 2026.
The Process Engineer Intern at Cornerstone Building Brands is responsible for documenting, improving, and supporting the manufacturing operations used in the production of vinyl siding. Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, this role will be responsible for creating crucial training documentation (ex. Work Breakdown Instructions, Visual Standard Operating Procedures, Cycle Time Definitions, Quality Tools, …). Additionally, the intern will work with several key department leaders to establish and implement business critical improvements (ex. 5S Zones / Standards / Routines / Audits, Visual Management Tools, labor reduction, output increases, equipment reliability, …). Many of these improvements will be shared via live Microsoft Teams Conferences with other plants in our Surface Solutions Division (and potentially with all three Cornerstone Building Brands Divisions and corporate support locations).
WHAT YOU'LL DO
* Partner with department managers and site engineers to utilize analytical skills and identify opportunities for OEE improvements (i.e. addressing root causes for identified inefficiencies): at times working with counterparts at other Cornerstone Building Brands locations involved in similar Continuous Improvement / Kaizen activities
* Identify, select, and implement specific process / tooling / area management near term improvement activities
* Establish and maintain Visual Standard Operating Procedures and supporting documentation for the unit operations performed both at the plant and the distribution center
* Review, redline and create as-built drawings for new and existing plant systems
* Administer the 5S Audit Program at the Kearney Extrusion Plant and Kansas City Distribution Center
* Administer the Operations Winning Impact Team (WIT) Boards used to communicate performance metrics throughout the plant and distribution center
Qualifications

Concept development, design creation, concept evaluation & selection, verification & validation and implementing into production (plastics, sheet metal, rubber and glass components)
Work with procurement and suppliers to coordinate developing the tools by running the DFM's and manufacturability reviews
