About the Policy and Advocacy Team
The policy and advocacy team advocates for leadership by democratic governments to vigorously oppose dictators and oppression and strengthen democracy domestically and around the world. We amplify the voices of those struggling for freedom in repressive societies and counter authoritarian efforts to weaken international scrutiny of their regimes.
The US government is our primary advocacy target, and the team meets regularly with executive branch officials, Members of the US Congress, and staff. We also engage in advocacy with foreign government officials based in Washington, D.C. and support the advocacy activities of our program staff at multilateral institutions, regional bodies, and in countries where we have programming. We also conduct advocacy toward the private sector on an issue-specific basis.
The policy and advocacy team is responsible for overseeing the creation of all of Freedom House's advocacy plans and policy recommendations, in coordination with our subject matter experts.
The team also oversees Freedom House's work with other US-based human rights organizations. The team conducts advocacy trainings and helps prepare Freedom House staff and the human rights defenders we work with to meet with, brief, and testify before policymakers.
Priority advocacy issues for Freedom House for the coming year include reinvigorating support for democracy at home and abroad; working to bring accountability for authoritarians, particularly by addressing the growing challenge of transnational repression and by strengthening targeted sanctions programs such as the Global Magnitsky Act; protecting rights in a digital age; addressing the Chinese Communist Party's threat to democracy globally; strengthening protection and resilience for civil society groups and human rights defenders; and working to release political prisoners.
Position Description and Key Responsibilities
This is an entry-level position on the Advocacy & Communications team reporting directly to the Director of Advocacy. We are seeking a motivated, upbeat, and creative professional who shares our passion for championing democracy at home and abroad. You will join our small, friendly, hardworking, team, as we implement US-focused advocacy campaigns to boost US government support for global democracy and human rights.
Some duties and responsibilities:
Assist with creation, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of annual advocacy plans.
Assist with creation of related advocacy materials, including semi-monthly newsletter, handouts, and text for social media.
Assist with developing policy recommendations based on annual report findings.
Assist in fielding requests from government officials and expanding network of US and foreign government contacts.

Skills, competencies, and experience:
Bachelor's degree in international relations, political science, communications, marketing, or related field.
1-2 years working for the US government (congressional experience preferred) or in an advocacy or lobbying role.
Passion for building bipartisan support around global democracy and human rights issues.
Upbeat, motivated, self-starter with ability to work both independently and in teams.

School for International Training seeks a Launch Coordinator for
IHP Health and Community: Globalization, Culture & Care
to be responsible for the development and delivery of a 10-12-day program launch where students will receive orientation and begin attending lectures and engaging in various program activities. The Launch Coordinator will develop experiential programming and curriculum, coordinate logistics of the program launch in an organized and timely manner, develop and manage a cost-effective budget prior to the start of the program launch, and maintain accurate expense records. This position is mostly part-time before and after the 10-12-day launch, but is full-time during the launch when students, staff, and faculty are on site.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Curriculum and Program Development
o Work closely with the IHP Program Director (PD) to develop experiential programming and curriculum for the IHP program launch.
o Design a well-conceived schedule consisting of site visits, guest lectures, and field-based activities in the US launch city/region and actualize that schedule by confirming guest speakers, site visits, and other activities as agreed upon with the Program Director.
o Compose and compile the 'Launch Country Guide' a booklet that includes the program schedule, speaker backgrounds and site visit details, background articles related to educational activities, local sites of interest, and logistics of the launch city necessary to ensure student safety and well-being.
• Logistical Coordination
o Coordinate logistics of the program launch in an organized and timely manner.
o Pre-launch: secure accommodations for the students and faculty, reserve classroom space, plan for group meals by making restaurant reservations, arrange for group transportation, purchase instructional materials, prepare welcome packets, assist with optional activities, serve as a local expert and guide for questions about the area, etc.
o Ensure all students and faculty arrive at the airport in time for the official group flight.
o During launch: Must be available full-time to coordinate all logistics on site with students and IHP staff team and troubleshoot any unforeseen issues that arise.
• Budget/Finance
o Work with the Program Director to develop an accurate and cost-effective budget prior to the start of the program launch.
o Coordinate program expenses and make payments to all guest speakers, host organizations, and vendors utilized during the program launch.
o Collect all receipts and pay stubs for all expenses incurred during the launch.
o Within two weeks of the end of the launch, complete expense reports that organize and compile all expenses and receipts in an organized manner according to World Learning financial policies and
guidelines.
• Facilitation of Educational Content
o Attend all educational activities during the program launch.
o Facilitate and lead debriefing sessions, group conversations, and reflection activities along with program staff designed to support the academic and learning objectives of the program launch.
o Conduct a final program evaluation at the end of the launch designed to draw feedback from students to be utilized in future programmatic planning.
• Student Support
o Work with the Program Director and SIT staff to ensure that any administrative and student issues associated with the launch are resolved.

REQUIREMENTS
Required Experience/Education:
The ideal candidates should have:
• Lived in Washington, DC for at least 2 years.
• At least 4 years of professional experience relating to the themes of the program.
• Demonstrated experience and local knowledge of the launch location expressed through diverse relationships with an array of practitioners, academics, and/or activists.
• Demonstrated understanding of field-based, experiential, or popular education programs and pedagogy, with knowledge of study abroad preferred.

IHP health and community: globalization, culture, & care
IHP Health and Community is a semester-long, global comparative study abroad program for undergraduate students. The program is founded on a concept of health as a product of myriad interrelated determinants from the molecular to the global levels. Health, disease, illness, and wellbeing are seen not only as the outcomes of specific pathogens, toxins, or behavioral factors, but influenced by and acted upon through social relationships, cultural practices and attitudes, political institutions, ecological and economic forces. Thus, we also focus on the role of community in achieving health. Only when considered within this complex web of interrelated factors can we understand the ways health is distributed and experienced within local communities and across regions of the world. The Health and Community curriculum pays special attention to health disparities across the Global South and Global North, as well as a focus on community-driven health initiatives and the role of community in wellbeing.

Facilitate learning and teach two courses:
Health, Culture, and Community
(an introductory course based in medical anthropology)
Community Health Research Methods and Ethics
(an introductory research methods class that highlights methods used in public health fieldwork; this course is taught in collaboration with local country staff)

Requirements
Required Experience/Education:
Terminal degree (PhD or equivalent; All But Dissertation considered) and practice researching and teaching in a related field, such as medical anthropology, cultural anthropology, sociology, and/or public health/policy.
Expertise in at least one of the topic areas listed above and general knowledge of history and social theory.
Experience teaching at the college level and a strong commitment to experiential learning, including non-didactic methods that promote critical thinking and field-based research, discussion, and self-reflection.
Experience living and working abroad, ideally in at least one of the program countries listed above (preferred).
Required Behaviors:
Must be able to meet the physical, emotional maturity, and mental health demands as well as possess the personal qualities - patience, adaptability, collegiality, cross-cultural competence, and organization - needed to be part of an intensive, team-oriented study abroad program that covers four countries in one semester.
The ability and desire to support and communicate with students throughout the study abroad experience both in and outside of the classroom.

Position Summary
The Communications and Social Media Intern will support Freedom House's communications efforts to improve visibility on social networking and new media sites, promote media outreach, and help prepare online and print publications. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management
Oversee management of finance, risk assessment, accounting, investment, budgeting, internal control, tax, and grant compliance processes.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
Significant senior executive level experience managing the financial and human capital required to successfully drive the operations of a mission-driven business, social enterprise, nonprofit, or government agency.
Demonstrated tangible accomplishments across some combination of the following:
Designing, implementing, and evaluating annual and long-term operational plans and budgets for a complex organization that operates in multiples locations, including overseas.
Identifying, prioritizing, and addressing complex legal, compliance (including compliance with USG grant requirements), and security issues (including security operations for staff and offices in closed and closing societies) for a high-profile advocacy organization.

Grant Administration and Compliance Manager

The Grant Administration and Compliance Manager is a member of a five person team leading the implementation of the Human Rights Support Mechanism (HRSM), a $150-million, five year USAID funded Leader with Associates award that supports approximately 30 ongoing democracy and human rights programs around the world. Working with Freedom House's finance department, a highly competent program management team, and a coalition of dynamic partner organizations, this position offers a mid-career US Government grants and compliance professional an engaging and effective environment to work in.
The individual in this position will use their financial and project management experience, detailed knowledge of USAID rules and regulations, and industry best practices to ensure the compliance of Freedom House and pass-through (subrecipient) HRSM projects. The person in this position is responsible for ensuring that project deliverables (and costs) are implemented and reported on in accordance with the terms and conditions of the federal award(s) and with established business and financial procedures across internal and external teams. This person will also strengthen existing HRSM procedures, identify and propose solutions to compliance issues, including working with outside organizations, from program design to closeout. This person will also conduct compliance trainings for new HRSM staff, report to the HRSM Technical Director, and is expected to collaborate closely with the FH finance department. This position is based in Washington, DC.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
HRSM financial management:
Manage HRSM budgets and projections, and provide HRSM Technical Director and USAID with budgetary information and analysis
Provide standard and ad hoc budgetary reports in user friendly formats to authorized personnel as needed
Support efforts needed to extend or re-bid the HRSM award
Supervise HRSM program staff in updating, streamlining and standardizing HRSM financial processes and communicate these processes to HRSM consortium partners
Compliance and grant management:
Supervise program staff to ensure the grants-related policies and procedures under HRSM comply with USAID requirements
Respond to requests from USAID regarding grants, contracts, agreements, and other compliance requirements under HRSM
Review sub-award packages for accuracy, completeness and compliance
Review contracts, letters of agreement, and other contractual documents for partners and vendors
Ensure that grants and sub-awards are expended in compliance with USAID requirements
Review expense reports, financial reports, and payment requests prepared by program team members to ensure compliance with Freedom House and USAID requirements
Assist with reviewing award documents and modifications for HRSM programs
Monitor applicable federal regulations and initiate needed changes and updates to grants, contracts and agreements

Office Operations Manager

Freedom House is seeking to fill an OFFICE OPERATIONS MANAGER position. This exempt position is responsible for the efficient functioning of the Freedom House offices in Washington, DC and New York City, including: (1) development, implementation, and monitoring of office administrative procedures and support systems, and (2) coordinating office workspace, meeting space, equipment, and AV needs with department heads, employees, and outside contacts as needed.
The candidate best prepared for this role will be someone who looks forward to the challenge of designing and implementing a new, post-pandemic, model for the workplace.
This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the organization's Chief Financial and Administrative Officer.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXPECTATIONS :
Manage the Office Operations Department personnel and annual budget by:
Directing and supervising the activities of the Receptionist and outside resources, establishing team and individual goals and objectives, monitoring, and reviewing performance, and ensuring functions are backed-up during staff absences to ensure continuous support for employees and guests.

Conduct a landscape analysis of the field and identify the most promising tactics and strategies for releasing prisoners.
Develop a landscape analysis of organizations and campaigns focused on political prisoner work and the variety of approaches taken by different organizations
Research key trends in each region of the world, including numbers of political prisoners and trends in this area
Develop and Launch Strategy and Workplan
Create a one-year plan and a five-year plan for the political prisoner initiative, focused on developing targeted campaigns (both public or private) and initiatives aimed at freeing individual prisoners
Develop partnerships and workplans with law firms and communications firms to do pro bono work on prisoner release and advocacy
As appropriate, identify and begin work on a small number of cases.

The Research Associate will join a small, supportive, and dynamic team working to assess human rights in the digital age. The position will play a key role in producing
Freedom on the Net
, our annual internet freedom study encompassing issues such as censorship, disinformation, and surveillance. Responsibilities will range from analyzing the impact of complex regulatory proposals on free expression and privacy, supporting project management and logistics, and liaising with a dispersed network of local internet freedom researchers. This is a full-time position based in New York City, reporting to the Research Director for Technology and Democracy.
Key Responsibilities
Strengthen regional and thematic expertise within Freedom House, contribute analysis to
Freedom on the Net
and other written products, and provide substantive input at internal and external meetings
Perform substantive fact-checking, editing, rewriting, and proofreading of reports on internet freedom, many authored by non-native English speakers. In the process of editing, supplement the reports with own research
Assist appropriate team members in designing and facilitating
