Role accountabilities:
Responsibilities will include a combination of data/sample collection, site operational support, and remedial system operations and maintenance through field activities, as well as supporting client deliverables and field work planning in the office. Fieldwork will be a key aspect of this position, which will offer you an opportunity to be trained to oversee drilling for soil sampling and groundwater well installation, groundwater sampling, subcontractor oversight, operation and maintenance of remediation systems, vapor intrusion/soil gas surveys, among other tasks. It is essential to conduct fieldwork with a focus on health and safety.
Your core duties will include:
Prepare subcontracts and oversee the work of subcontractors.
Writing and preparing technical reports, work plans, letters, and memoranda
Complete office work including data compilation and interpretation, health & safety plan preparation, report writing, regulatory file reviews, and task planning/coordination with vendors, laboratories, contractors, and coworkers.
Conduct field work including soil, groundwater, and/or vapor sampling and contractor oversight. Field work will require regional business travel for 2 to 3 days per week on average. During the second half of the year, field work often occurs 5 days we week. A few times per year, travel will be required within the U.S. for up to two weeks at a time.
This is by no means a comprehensive list, as you grow your career you may have the opportunity to get involved with these or other initiatives and opportunities throughout our global organization. The successful candidate will be involved in interpreting and evaluating field and analytical data to prepare site characterization reports, remedial investigation reports, engineering designs, permit applications, and construction-related documents.
While this position requires both field and office work, the candidate should expect to spend 70% to 90% of their time in the field, with some travel requiring hotel stays. Candidates must have a good driving record and be willing to work outside in all weather conditions and for extended periods. Staff are expected to regularly work 9- to 12-hour field days and document the work in writing while in the field or in the evening each day. Candidates must also be able to meet the physical demands associated with performing field work, including lifting heavy equipment, working in a standing position for extended periods of time, working alone at remote sites, etc. While some field work involves the need for effective collaboration with small and large groups of coworkers, subcontractors, and clients, many days involve independent work with minimal face to face contact with coworkers.
Field work may be performed at project sites with environmental media (e.g., soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, etc.) that has been impacted with hazardous substances and/or hazardous wastes. However, Arcadis provides substantial Health and Safety training, support and mentoring for all project activities, and promotes a strong safety culture where employee and public safety comes first.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
Our Staff Geologist position is located in our Rochester, NY office.
As a key member of the Montrose Environmental Solutions team, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:
Collecting field data in an organized and concise manner, consistent with corporate and client standard operating procedures and work plans.
Assisting with project fieldwork. Fieldwork activities will include soil, groundwater, soil vapor, surface water and other media sampling including maintenance of monitoring equipment at various locations.
Assisting with basic remedial engineering design tasks supporting Professional Engineers in the development of site cleanup Work Plans, cost estimates, drawings, and Contract Documents.
Conducting Environmental Construction oversight for projects involving in-situ and ex-situ remediation, demolition, tank removals, earthwork, etc. Tasks would also include confirmation sampling, air monitoring, and documentation.
Assisting in developing and executing work plans at project sites.
Exercising considerable care in following directions and various project control documents.
Focused interpretation of data, technical writing/report preparation and client interaction.
Assisting with generation of proposals including scope and cost development under the supervision of Project Managers.
Additional duties as may be assigned which may include occasional travel to locations all over the US including Alaska, Vermont, Washington, and others.
YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS
