The Histology Lab Assistant under the direction of the Histology Supervisor performs the daily activities of accessioning all tissue specimens. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Accession all tissue specimens and make cassettes. Assist pathologists/PA in cutting room when needed. Properly hang tissue on the processors. Responsible for determining/selecting specimens for grossing. Photograph specimen (Polaroid and 35 mm). Prepare tissue to be sent out for further testing such as Lymphoma Phenotyping, Quantitative Iron studies, etc. Keep quality control charts on equipment in the accession and cutting room. Prepare routine solutions, ensure paraffin dispensers are filled daily, maintain and inventory of supplies and store in proper location and keep a clean work area. Responsible for proper disposal and handling of hazardous waste to include xylene recycling (i.e. xylene, reagent alcohol, formaldehyde) and dispose of specimens according to procedures. Review procedure manuals and stay current with procedural changes that have occurred. Exercise all laboratory safety precautions and adhere to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals. Perform all job responsibilities in alignment with the industry's best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information and other sensitive company data. Explains testing procedure to patient and/or significant others including exam to be performed, type of contrast media used, length of exam and equipment necessary to perform exam. Functions as a scrub assistant; establishes and maintains sterile field according to department/institution policy. Follows all guidelines regarding infection control. Functions in the role of monitor; operates EKG, x-ray and hemodynamic equipment to monitor changes in patient's blood pressure, heart rate, EKG and pulse oximetry during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. Intervenes appropriately to changes in patient's physiological status. Interacting with patient as to his/her comfort and safety, monitors patient vital signs and procedural documentation, sets up and maintains equipment and treatment room during diagnostic or therapeutic procedure, runs blood oximetry for cardiac output and assists physician with various diagnostic and mapping systems. Operates various equipment used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including but not limited to, Hemodynamic monitoring, defibrillator, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), poser injector, stents, rotoblator, temporary pacemakers, TEC device, angiojet and x-ray in a safe and effective manner. Observes all occupational and radiation safety regulations. Wears appropriate protective aprons, goggles and gloves. Demonstrates a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth. Maintains all required certifications/licensures; completes all mandatory education requirements. Stays abreast of changes in technology. Performs other duties as assigned. What You Will Need Licensure: Current CPR certification required or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within six (6) months from date of hire into classification. Currently registered as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and/or American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT).
