Primary Purpose of the Position
The Machinist Apprentice will set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts, fit and assemble machine parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques. They will be technically proficient in the machining trade. They will be self-motivated and proactive in addressing needs and issues. Understand upcoming work and requirements for the work, communicate needs before they impede productions. Maintain dimensional logs for all the work and jobs that go across their machines. And understands the applicable sections of the DMC QC manuals.
Essential Functions / Duties
To assure quality machining of metal parts/assemblies in a timely manner, efficient and safe manner to promote and support the success of SMC
- Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and references points on material or workpieces as guides for subsequent machining.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, grinders, and shapers.
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
- Set up and observes machine operations to detect malfunction or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or control media as required
- Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specification, using precision measuring instruments.
- Set up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks.
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, or surface tables, hand tools and power tools.
- Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
- Maintain machine (oil, grease) and keep ways clean.
