Machinist II Responsibilities Include: Fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment. Operates one or more types of machines in order to meet production demands. support rapid fabrication of highly complex and non-routine experimental and prototype components Sets and adjusts machine settings as necessary. Reads and interprets diagrams and blueprints to select, position, and secure machinery to ensure proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product. Complete tasks accurately according to customer specifications. Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, reference planes, location of surfaces, machining parameters, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T). Setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs. Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; and indicating vices. Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position. Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces, adhering to international standards. Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting controls; replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes. Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs. Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.     Machine, fabricate, and refurbish newly designed and replacement shipboard components utilizing templates and technical documentation to include ships' drawings. Including removing, repairing, manufacturing new, modifying, and testing of various shipboard components. Determine speeds and feeds, coolants, and lubricants or abrasives to be used to cut, turn, drill, mill, bore, tap, thread, ream, lap, hone, shape, and grind or finish item. Machine materials to include: stainless steel, 300/400 series; monel; K-monel; copper; brass; aluminum, 4140, 4130, 6061-T6; nylon; Teflon; and various plastics. Maintain dimensional accuracy by inspection of parts using various precision measuring instruments including: sine plates, comparators, micrometers, calipers, v-blocks, angle plates, indicators, dial height gauges, go/no-go gauges, thread gauges, surface gages and other measuring tools. Determine which machine tool would be used most effectively, and the proper sequence of operations on each machine. Make new job setups on a variety of different types of equipment involving accurate alignment in order to maintain specified overall tolerances. Set up and operate conventional machine tools, including: horizontal lathes, vertical turret lathes, horizontal boring machines, radial arm drills, vertical and horizontal milling machines, bench grinders, ID and OD grinders, surface grinders, jig boring machines, hones, and other manual machine tools. Set up and operate saws including cut-off saws, abrasive cut-off saws, sheet metal brake, hydraulic presses, hand presses, parts tumbler, belt sanders, and heat treating and hardening ovens. Make recommendations and utilize 3D printing/additive manufacturing for the design of replacement shipboard repair parts and components using various polymers and metals. Inspect parts using various setups including use of sine plates, comparators, magnetic v-blocks, angle plates, indicators, dial height gauges, jack stands, gauge block stack ups, and coordinate-measuring machine (CMM). Follow the requirements and procedures set forth in FWPs and CWPs. Qualifications: Must have a High School diploma or equivalent and have at least 3 years of relevant experience. Must be able to read, understand, and work to the requirements of applicable ship drawings, blueprints, equipment technical manuals, and other applicable approved technical references. Use shop mathematics including trigonometry and geometry and hold tolerances to one ten thousandths (.0001) of an inch. Must be proficient in the following areas: Use Master Cam X10 to program computer numeric control (CNC) machining centers and lathes. Manually program CNC lathes using Fanuc control. Set up and operate 3, 4, and 5-axis CNC milling centers. Program and edit programs for CNC machining centers. Manually input (MDI) machine operations. Set up and operate single and multiple spindle CNC lathes. Must have a familiarity with 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing. Must be able to provide expertise and guidance in 3D printing/additive manufacturing, including advancements in technology, equipment, and techniques. Must be able to work with minimum supervision and make independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral and written guidance and accepted trade practices, processes and procedures while accomplishing assignments.
