Mechanical engineering internship job in Virginia Beach, VA
Junior Mechanical Engineering position with emphasis on electronics hardware design. This position will work with a lead mechanical engineer as part of a cross-functional team of engineers to design and develop high-performance products. The scope of the position encompasses a range of responsibilities, spanning mechanical design, analysis, and integration of high-performance radio amplifiers, servers, power supplies, loudspeakers, and other electronics. Duties may also include the design, assembly and maintenance of production test fixtures as required. Mechanical engineers will also be responsible for fostering partnerships with suppliers to support engineering development activity.

Essential Functions*:
Create 3D models for design feasibility and interference detection
Produce 2D manufacturing & assembly drawings from 3D models
Interface with outside vendors to source custom machined, sheet metal, die-cut, and injection molded parts
Develop and manage mechanical design packages (models, drawings, BOMs)
Analyze designs to determine suitability for intended purpose and environments, including (but not limited to) thermal and structural with an emphasis on vibration and shock, fatigue, etc.
Perform GD&T tolerance analyses of designs to ensure manufacturability and interchangeability.
Directly interface with members of the product development team to produce high quality, dependable products and resolve technical issues.
Interpret and apply military, industry and customer standards.
Attendance and participation in internal and customer-attended meetings.
Conduct root cause analysis investigations for production and field failures
Provide input into new products, processes, standards, and plans
Provide guidance to production/manufacturing operators in the assembly of production hardware.

Education / Training / Skills / Experience:
Qualifications:
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering with 3-5 years prior experience OR Associates/Engineering Technology degree and 5-7 years prior experience
Fluency with 3D CAD and ability to create complex solid models and assemblies (Creo, Solidworks, Inventor, etc.)
Working knowledge and experience generating 2D dimensional CAD drawings (Creo, Solidworks, Inventor, etc.)
Experience designing machined, sheet metal, or injection-molded parts
Strong analytical and communication skills
Ability to take direction and hunger to learn and grow as an engineer.
Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, etc)
Willing to travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally.

Experience using PTC applications, including Creo & Windchill PLM software

The Role
This is an UNPAID internship through the Hire Vets Now (HVN) SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. HVN SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. Newport News Shipbuilding Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with Newport News Shipbuilding.
MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Junior Mechanical Engineering position with emphasis on electronics hardware design. This position will work with a lead mechanical engineer as part of a cross-functional team of engineers to design and develop high-performance products. The scope of the position encompasses a range of responsibilities, spanning mechanical design, analysis, and integration of high-performance radio amplifiers, servers, power supplies, loudspeakers, and other electronics. Duties may also include the design, assembly and maintenance of production test fixtures as required. Mechanical engineers will also be responsible for fostering partnerships with suppliers to support engineering development activity.

They will show a willingness to take on new or unfamiliar challenges while identifying and overcoming downstream obstacles. Essential Functions*:
* Create 3D models for design feasibility and interference detection
* Produce 2D manufacturing & assembly drawings from 3D models
* Interface with outside vendors to source custom machined, sheet metal, die-cut, and injection molded parts
* Develop and manage mechanical design packages (models, drawings, BOMs)
* Analyze designs to determine suitability for intended purpose and environments, including (but not limited to) thermal and structural with an emphasis on vibration and shock, fatigue, etc.
* Perform GD&T tolerance analyses of designs to ensure manufacturability and interchangeability.
* Directly interface with members of the product development team to produce high quality, dependable products and resolve technical issues.
* Interpret and apply military, industry and customer standards.
* Attendance and participation in internal and customer-attended meetings.
* Conduct root cause analysis investigations for production and field failures
* Provide input into new products, processes, standards, and plans
* Provide guidance to production/manufacturing operators in the assembly of production hardware.
* Must be able to work onsite in Virginia Beach, VA (not remote)
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to think in 3D
* Experience using PTC applications, including Creo & Windchill PLM software
* Experience managing large CAD assemblies (100+ parts)
* Experience with electronics packaging and integration (PCB's, connectors, harnesses, buttons, switches, etc.)
* Experience with sheet metal & machined-part design
* Experience with industry standard coatings & finishes (anodize, powder coat, paint, etc.)
* Understanding and experience designing for both military and commercial environments
* Knowledge of designing to meet MIL-STD-810 requirements
* Self-motivated and ability to work with limited guidance
* Strong team player who can incorporate input from others and can generate consensus
* Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
