The Job:

Mechanical design: Assist in the design and development of hand tools and power tools, utilizing CAD software and engineering principles to create 3D models, assemblies, and detailed drawings.
Product development: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, engineering, and manufacturing, to contribute to the development and improvement of hand tools and power tools, ensuring adherence to quality standards and regulatory requirements.
Prototyping and testing: Support the prototyping and testing of new product designs, analyzing performance, durability, and safety to identify areas for improvement and optimization.

What you will do
As a member of the Johnson Controls Mechanical Engineering Co-Op/Intern will be responsible for various engineering activities within the compressor engineering department. Reporting to the engineering manager, interfaces directly with compressor engineers, aero engineers, technicians, test lab, and other departments within the company as needed.
Role will primarily be focused on large centrifugal compressors for York brand water cooled chillers.
How you will do it:
The intern will follow compressor testing, organize and analyze test data, and create reports
Take direction from manager and engineers, provide guidance to test operators and interface with compressor technicians. Understand and follow all relative safety procedures and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment
Create and execute test plans
Edit and maintain work guidelines and instructions for future interns to follow
Assist in various assigned projects within the compressor engineering function as necessary
At the conclusion of the internship, a brief presentation to the compressor engineering department summarizing your activities and key learnings will be required

* Develop detailed specifications and selections for piping systems and mechanical equipment, including inline components (PVF), rotating and fixed equipment (pumps, compressors, HX's), and specialty items (flexible hoses, expansion joints).
* Ensure the constructability of the mechanical packages and perform stress analysis calculations on lines deemed to require further review and analysis utilizing hand calculations and/or computer software.
* Collaborate with the Design Department to ensure the 3D models for the facilities match the engineering design documents and selections. Resolve conflicts and issues. Collaborate with Structural, Electrical, and Instrumentation to ensure all portions of the model are properly designed and avoid conflicts.
* Support safety reviews and peer checks to ensure high quality, functional, and constructable engineering designs and final documentation packages.

* Provide project engineering and management support on smaller projects, as required.

We are currently seeking highly motivated engineering students for **Engineering Internships for 2026** to work in person at our Nuclear locations in Pennsylvania. These paid internships will last approximately 10 weeks starting June 1st, 2026 through August 7th, 2026. Interns will work on specific projects, designed to help them gain real-world, hands-on experience working independently under an assigned supervisor and technical mentor. Historically, intern projects have included:

Summary/Objective: The Optical Product Engineer designs and develops within New Product or Sustaining Product Engineering.
Essential Functions/ Responsibilities:
Developing & writing the Engineering inputs for technical documentation; and adhere to all corporate engineering standards including but not limited to documentation, file management, part modeling, and part simulation.
Works directly with Marketing, Sales, Product Tech Lead, and Systems Architect to review opportunities and develop engineering cost analyses based on Product Scopes; work directly with purchasing, quality, manufacturing engineering, test engineering, process engineering, plating, suppliers, and other necessary groups as a cross-functional team to develop products and solutions.
Make significant contributions to design, development, and validation of active optical transceiver solutions (including but not limited to VCSEL/PD based mid-board optical transceivers, passive optical interconnects, high-speed electrical connectors).
Works hands on to identify problems during new product development and/or when quality concerns arise.
Effective use of Office365 including Outlook, Excel, PPT, SharePoint, etc.
Work effectively with different levels and individuals inside and outside of the organization.

Required Experience
3 - 5 Year's experience in active optical transceiver design or connector design/manufacturing required.
Component, assembly design, and manufacturing experience may be considered in lieu of years of experience.
Engineering Design Software: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.
Simulation Software: FEA, CFD/Thermal Modeling, etc. is preferred, but not required.
Must be proficient in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and Advanced Tolerance Analysis.
Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously as priorities can change quickly.
Must have excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills with team members working in different locations.
Must be able to sit/stand for at least 90 consecutive minutes, and not suffer from any sensory deprivation and/or paralysis of the limbs.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent is required
