The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) offers a unique recruitment opportunity for a Vegetable Crops Production and Management Assistant Specialist, Represented. UC ANR operates a statewide network of researchers, educators and support staff dedicated to the development and application of knowledge to address local agricultural, environmental and (community) health issues. Research, outreach and education from locally based Cooperative Extension offices serves all 58 counties from 70+ locations throughout the state. By working and living among those we serve, UC ANR expands the University of California's reach to engage all people and communities in California, ensuring equal access to the UC System.
Purpose:
The Assistant Specialist for Vegetable Crops Production and Management (1.0 FTE) will assist in all phases of applied vegetable production and management research and extension efforts in the northern San Joaquin Valley. The position will be headquartered at the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Stanislaus County office in Modesto, CA and will be additionally responsible for conducting research and extension activities in the northern San Joaquin Valley counties of Merced and San Joaquin per the request of projects. The candidate will also have opportunities to participate in national and statewide collaborative project activities.
The Assistant Specialist will provide independent support of research and extension programming by designing, conducting, and communicating results from applied research projects in locally relevant vegetable crops (watermelon, cole crops, processing tomato, fresh market tomato, and oriental vegetables). The specific activities include designing research trials in both small- and large-scale commercial vegetable fields, creating protocols that guide meaningful measurements of vegetable growth and yield, nitrogen management, taking soil and plant samples following specific study protocols, and conducting lab analysis of plant, soil, and fruit samples. The Assistant Specialist will work primarily on projects focusing on 1) evaluation of nitrogen-fixing and mycorrhizal biostimulants and biofertilizers on Asian vegetable nutrient management among small-scale commercial growers, and 2) optimizing vegetable grafting technology and irrigation management for various vegetable crops using online decision-support tools. Other topics the Specialist may work on involve insect and disease management for vegetable crops. The position will perform a key role in vegetable production and management research activities and lead technicians and seasonal student assistants. The Specialist will leverage expertise in research data collection and summarization, as well as formal statistical analysis, to assist the supervisor/PI in organizing extension and field meetings, conference calls, and other professional activities.
Reporting Relationship: The Assistant Specialist is administratively responsible to the Vegetable Crops Advisor at UCCE Stanislaus County.

Required Qualifications and Skills
Required Qualifications
Education: A minimum of master's degree or other advanced degrees in disciplines such as Plant Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Irrigation, Soil Science or a closely related field is required by the appointment start date.
Experience in data analysis using statistical software tools such as R and SAS.
Experience in applied research on vegetable crops.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing clientele and project needs.
Additional Qualifications:
Must obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License prior to applying or supervising the application of any pesticide.

The Assistant Specialist position is a non-career track position. The position is a two-year term appointment and also eligible with a merit cycle of every two years. Commitment of two years to this position is needed. The performance in the position will be evaluated annually. After two years, extension of the position will be based on continued need, performance and availability of funding.

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) Small Farms Network is hiring a staff position to provide technical assistance to small-scale and underserved farmers during the implementation of California's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). This position will join a statewide effort under the UC ANR Small Farms Network to support small-scale farms in navigating the unique challenges presented by SGMA implementation at the local, regional, and state levels. The position will be based in the Riverside region covering Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
The SGMA Technical Assistance Community Educator for Small Farms (Community Education Specialist IV) will provide technical assistance, extension education, and policy analysis to support small farms in sustainable groundwater management and participation in SGMA processes. Technical assistance will include connecting small-scale farmers to additional resources such as hydrogeological consulting services, legal services, and assistance with irrigation system analysis and water conservation. The Community Educator will assess regional needs of small-scale farmers during SGMA implementation and determine appropriate methods for outreach, education, and technical assistance.
Position duties include visiting farms to provide individual technical assistance, developing educational materials, conducting outreach activities, workshops, and field days, and connecting farmers to resources from nonprofit and private sector partners. The Community Educator will also engage with local groundwater sustainability agencies (GSAs), including attending meetings, reviewing groundwater sustainability plans (GSPs), analyzing local and regional groundwater management policies, and providing information on the impacts of local policy decisions. Project activities will be coordinated with the UC ANR Small Farms Network, a program of UC SAREP, well as the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), and other nonprofit and agency partner organizations.

The Nutrition Policy Institute (NPI) is a statewide institute within the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of California. NPI conducts and translates policy-relevant research to transform environments for healthy children, families, and communities. The advisor will work at the local level and regionally with other community groups to leverage their assets associated with outdoor recreation opportunities. Outdoor recreation is an important local economic activity. These counties are known for their unique combination of high-elevation forests, alpine lakes, volcanic geology, and remote scenic valleys that create a distinct Sierra Mountain experience, focused on hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, OHV riding, and skiing to cycling, birding, and water-based recreation on lakes and rivers.
UCCE Advisors are responsible for applied research and the extension of knowledge. Research activities are needs-based, mission-oriented, and focused on addressing our communities' challenges. Extension activities are educational practices advisors use to share research results directly with their clientele and communities. Increased knowledge and understanding of science-based research helps to support and promote the adoption of practices and technologies that solve problems. Extension methods may include individual consultations, presentations, organization of educational workshops and short courses, field demonstrations and site visits. Information may also be disseminated via webinars, fact sheets, policy briefs, news blogs and social media. Position Details

The advisor is expected to conduct an innovative research and outreach program focused on outdoor recreation and the economic benefits to the local communities in the area. Major duties and responsibilities include:

Provide research, data analysis, and technical guidance to create, validate, and report on economic and community indicators of local tourism and outdoor recreation activities.
Support strategic planning to implement sustainable recreation and tourism development projects by working with multiple community partners, local colleges, funding agencies and organizations and community groups, including outdoor recreation user groups and advocacy groups in the local areas.
Work with tribal partners, Latino communities, and other underrepresented communities as partners in planning and implementation for sustainable recreation and tourism.

Extend knowledge on outdoor recreation through different modalities and approaches, which may include extension publications, newsletters, web pages, blogs, policy briefs, UCCE Advisor meetings, on-site visits to partner locations, and clientele workshops.

Purpose: The Area Director is responsible for the coordination and overall operation of UCCE programs in cooperation with county governments in Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado and Tuolumne counties, and in the future with Alpine county.
Responsibilities:
Act as a liaison between UCCE, Boards of Supervisors and County Administrative Officers as appropriate.
Serve as the chair of the University of California Cooperative Extension Central Sierra MCP Advisory Council. Hold twice yearly meetings of this Advisory Council.
Secure county budgets and resources that grow UCCE presence and efforts in the region.
Build relationships and synergies to deploy UCCE research to address regional needs.
Supervision and/or oversight of UCANR employees.
Understand and communicate value of UCCE impact to county partners and others.
Oversight and administration of UCCE educational and applied research programs.
Hire and manage personnel.
Provide direction and leadership to UCCE academic and support staff.
Mentor, manage and evaluate academic personnel.
Supervision of UC ANR employees.
Maintain positive working relationships with partnering public and private agencies.
Expand collaborations and funding sources.
Comply with University of California and county policies.
