Performs a variety of technical duties to assist in preparing and caring for pre-operative patients. Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards. Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient care and privacy. Transports patients to and from the Operating Room suite. Positions patients according to the type of surgery. Identifies and cares for biological specimens. Prepares the Operating Room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to type of case.
Responsibilities:

Under the direction of a professional nurse, performs all processes that relate to the delivery of direct patient care and assistance care in the OR prior to and during any surgical procedure.
Ability to proficiently scrub 3 specialty areas including but not limited to: Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, Robotics, etc. is highly preferred.
Establishes and maintains the sterile field, passes instruments, and sutures to the physician, and assists as directed by the physician.
Use the physician preference card as a beginning point when pulling cases and setting up the OR.
Ensures that preference cards are kept up to date and as complete as possible.
Works effectively as a member of the team caring for the patient.
Cooperates in team planning and execution.
Maintains a safe environment by always implementing technical and aseptic practices.
Demonstrates clinical expertise in the use and care of all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
Adheres to Universal Barrier Precautions for both patient and own safety in all patient care situations.
Demonstrates competency to monitor and control the surgical environment. Maintains proper traffic control, dress codes, and adherence to OR sanitation policies and procedures.
Familiar with facility policy and procedure regarding decontamination, processing, and sterilization of all instruments and supplies that are processed within the facility.
Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
Appropriately adapt assigned patient assessment, treatment and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served. xevrcyc

Conducts a careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and assists other medical personnel as necessary.
Administers prompt and efficient basic life support care within the limits of licensure or certification and in accordance with approved protocols prior to and during transport.
Provides careful handling of the patient to and from the ambulance.
Provides safe and efficient transport of the patient in the ambulance to the medical facility.
Provides a safe and efficient transfer of patient and patient care information to the receiving personnel at the destination.

Position Description: The Health Technician (Surgical) functions as an integral part of the surgical team. Independently reviews future surgery schedule daily to determine availability of specialized instruments, equipment, and implants.

Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures.
Prepares surgical devices during procedures.
Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.
In conjunction with the circulating Registered Nurse (RN), the incumbent performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy.
He/She is responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.
Receive tissue specimens and cultures for laboratory analysis and ensure circulating nurse receives correct information for labeling purposes.
Perform surgical technician duties in accordance with comprehensive knowledge of and adherence to current medical center, departmental, VHA policies, The Joint Commission, and OSHA policies.
Prepare and apply sterile dressings following procedure.
Independently implement infection control standards as required in the current hospital and specific departmental infection control policies.

Education:

Completion of an accredited surgical technology program is strongly preferred.
Licensure and Certification:
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is highly desirable.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Minimum of one year of experience as a surgical technician in a hospital or clinical setting, preferably with experience across multiple surgical specialties.
Experience with robotic surgical systems and advanced surgical instrumentation is preferred.

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including those related to patient satisfaction and actively participates in process improvement activities that enhance the likelihood that patients will achieve the organization Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Related
Education:
Assist other health care members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and regarding disease process/access.
Treatment:
Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their wellbeing since their last treatment.
Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and perform administration of heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law.
Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight and perform vascular access evaluation pre- treatment
Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order or as directed.
Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy.
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion; perform all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment - document.
Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures and evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access - standing & sitting blood pressure
Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
Evaluate the patient prior to discharge.
Perform and record Pre and Post dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
Responsible for calculating and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; and UF modeling as prescribed.
Responsible for ensuring appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits, (NVL) 160.
Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including completion of Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and, if applicable, progress notes.
Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the registered nurse or supervisor.
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy. Report any change or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
Perform and document any intervention for unusual patient status and document patients' response to intervention.
Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, provide appropriate intervention as needed, document and report any unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
Ensure that all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
Prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
Monitors patients performing self-care under the supervision of RN.
Staff Related
Assists in training of applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse.
Education/Communication:
Follows all organization business policies, procedures and systems incorporated into training, including compliance with ethical business practices
