Salary for newly appointed law enforcement Border Patrol Agents varies from:
Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11 $63,148 - $120,145 per year
Locality Pay: Varies by duty location.
Overtime Pay: Up to 25%
Duty location impacts pay rates; locality pay for federal law enforcement is higher in some locations than others. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with a grade level progression from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete 52 weeks in the lower grade level.
All Border Patrol Agents may select from an array of federal employment benefits that include health and insurance plans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan that is similar to traditional and ROTH 401(k) offerings. *Recruitment Incentive* Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (as defined in 5 CFR 575.102) will be offered up to a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 will be paid upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, with the remaining $10,000 awarded for accepting a prioritized

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:
· Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
· Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions to include using infrared scopes during night operations.
· Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
· Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
· Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission.
Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).
Veterans' Preference: You may also be eligible for an excepted service Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA). The age restriction does not apply if you are Veterans' Preference eligible.
Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. Border Patrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. Border Patrol Agents will be provided training to become proficient in the Spanish language at the Academy.

If applicants pass the Frontline National Exam (Civil Service Exam), they may be invited to complete a Physical Assessment Test (PAT), which is a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes or less, complete at least 15 push-ups in one minute, and complete at least 25 sit-ups in one minute. Prior to taking the PAT, each applicant will be required to produce a completed PAT waiver. The waiver will be emailed to applicants at an appropriate time. The applicant will be required to complete a physical examination and an EKG by a physician of their choice.
The physician will complete and sign the last page of the waiver, attesting to the fact that they have reviewed the applicant's health history, performed a physical examination, conducted an EKG, effectively clearing the applicant for participation in the above described physical assessment test. In addition to the PAT, select candidates will also be required to successfully complete a Civil Service Exam (Frontline National Exam via NTN or Frontline National Exam on-site in Orlando in an exam coordinated by OPD as described above), interviews, polygraph exams, a background investigation, a psychological exam and a medical exam. There are two (2) options on how to complete the Frontline National Exam, which are described below.
1. Selected applicants can complete the exam in-person in Orlando on a specific date determined by the Orlando Police Department. Applicants will be contacted by the Orlando Police Department concerning this option. The exam is administered by the Orlando Police Department. There is NO COST to complete the exam in-person. Generally, the exam is offered once per month. Applicants complete the exam in the morning. Applicants return to the testing venue in the afternoon, where results are divulged. Those passing the exam may have the opportunity to participate in the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and potentially a panel interview that same day.

2. The second method for applicants to complete Frontline National is via NTN. NTN has multiple testing locations throughout the country or the option to complete the exam virtually. Candidates complete the exam at their convenience and schedule the exam via NTN's website. Selected and qualified candidates will be contacted by the Orlando Police Department and provided a voucher for the exam cost. This voucher will waive the $55.00 cost of the exam, when candidates schedule their exam via NTN. This voucher is only being provided for a limited amount of time by the Orlando Police Department and may be discontinued at any time.

Those completing the exam via NTN will be contacted by the Orlando Police Department as to whether they have “Passed/Failed” the exam. The applicants passing the exam will be provided additional instructions on the next steps of the process.
If you have already completed Frontline National with NTN within the past 12 months from your PoliceOfficer application date, your scores are still valid via NTN. You can contact NTN Support at ************ and send your scores to the Orlando Police Department via NTN for a cost of $12.00. This $12.00 cost will be paid for by the Orlando Police Department for a limited time. Note: this only applies to those who have completed Frontline National with NTN within the past 12 months from the date of their PoliceOfficer application.
If applicants pass the Frontline National Exam (Civil Service Exam), they may be invited to complete a Physical Assessment Test (PAT), which is a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes or less, complete at least 15 push-ups in one minute, and complete at least 25 sit-ups in one minute. Prior to taking the PAT, each applicant will be required to produce a completed PAT waiver. The waiver will be emailed to applicants at an appropriate time. The applicant will be required to complete a physical examination and an EKG by a physician of their choice.
The physician will complete and sign the last page of the waiver, attesting to the fact that they have reviewed the applicant's health history, performed a physical examination, conducted an EKG, effectively clearing the applicant for participation in the above described physical assessment test. In addition to the PAT, select candidates will also be required to successfully complete a Civil Service Exam (Frontline National Exam via NTN or Frontline National Exam on-site in Orlando in an exam coordinated by OPD as described above), interviews, polygraph exams, a background investigation, a psychological exam and a medical exam. Note: Applicants reaching the latter stages of the selection process will have their fingerprints taken for background check purposes. Fingerprints submitted by applicants will be retained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as part of the National Rap Back Service.
Selection by the Orlando Police Department means that you will be retained as a conditional civilian employee. This entitles you to enrollment in the Basic Law Enforcement Academy (School of Public Safety - Valencia College), or if a certified officer in the State of Florida, you will be hired as a civilian employee until you successfully complete the orientation phase. Upon completion of the orientation phase, your status as a conditional employee will be concluded, and you will be hired as a probationary policeofficer. Failure to successfully complete the academy and orientation phase can result in immediate termination and removal of your name from further consideration for employment as a policeofficer.

DRIVER'S LICENSE
1. Applicant must have possessed a valid driver's license for at least one (1) year prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment.
CRIMINAL CONDUCT
Applicant will be disqualified if:
1. Applicant has been convicted of a felony crime; OR,
2. Applicant has been convicted of certain misdemeanor offenses, within five years of the date of application (please contact OPD Recruiting if you have questions about which misdemeanor crimes apply); OR,
3. Applicant has been convicted of any offense which can be considered domestic violence; OR,

DRUG USE

4. Within ten years of application, sale by applicant of a substance controlled by Chapter 893, Florida Statutes, shall disqualify applicant from employment eligibility.
DRIVING RECORD
Applicant will be disqualified for traffic convictions under any of the following conditions:
1. One conviction within five years prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment: A. Voluntary or involuntary manslaughter resulting from the operation of a motor vehicle; OR, B. Failing to stop and render aid, as required under any applicable State or Federal Law, in the event of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death or personal injury of another; OR, C. Driving a motor vehicle or being in actual physical control while having an unlawful blood alcohol level or while under the influence of alcoholic beverages or any substances controlled under any State or Federal law; OR, D. Attempting to elude police.
2. One conviction within three years prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment: A. Driving a motor vehicle while driver's license is suspended or revoked for reasons other than financial responsibility; OR, B. Reckless driving.
3. Two convictions singly or in combination within three years prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment: A. Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage of more than $50; OR, B. Unlawful speed resulting in an accident.
4. Five convictions singly or in combination within three years prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment of any traffic violations, except parking tickets, covered under any State or Federal law, or any valid ordinance of a municipality or county.
5. Traffic conviction record in which the accumulation of points resulted in the suspension of a driver's license within three years prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment.
6. Suspended or revoked driver's license for one of the following reasons within one year prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment: A. Failure to attend court ordered driving schools; OR, B. Failure to submit to a chemical test for intoxication or any suspension arising from an arrest or conviction for D.U.I. For the purposes of this section, issuance of a driver's license "For Business Purposes Only" will result in disqualification; OR, C. Failure to pay two or more traffic fines. The circumstances resulting in the non-payment of only one traffic fine will be evaluated on an individual basis and may or may not disqualify the applicant; OR, D. Financial responsibility (insurance cancellation, etc.) will be evaluated on an individual basis and may or may not disqualify the applicant.
7. Classified as a habitual traffic offender within the last ten (10) years.
FALSE INFORMATION
Applicant will be disqualified if:
1. Applicant is shown to have knowingly presented false oral or written information during his/her consideration for employment; OR
2. While employed as a sworn law enforcement officer, lied under oath during criminal or civil court proceedings.
MILITARY SERVICE RECORD
Applicant will be disqualified if he/she has received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities

Selected and qualified candidates will be contacted by the Orlando Police Department and provided a voucher for the exam cost. This voucher will waive the $55.00 cost of the exam, when candidates schedule their exam via NTN. This voucher is only being provided for a limited amount of time by the Orlando Police Department and may be discontinued at any time.

Note: this only applies to those who have completed Frontline National with NTN within the past 12 months from the date of their PoliceOfficer application.
If applicants pass the Frontline National Exam (Civil Service Exam), they may be invited to complete a Physical Assessment Test (PAT), which is a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes or less, complete at least 15 push-ups in one minute, and complete at least 25 sit-ups in one minute. Prior to taking the PAT, each applicant will be required to produce a completed PAT waiver. The waiver will be emailed to applicants at an appropriate time. The applicant will be required to complete a physical examination and an EKG by a physician of their choice.
The physician will complete and sign the last page of the waiver, attesting to the fact that they have reviewed the applicant's health history, performed a physical examination, conducted an EKG, effectively clearing the applicant for participation in the above described physical assessment test. In addition to the PAT, select candidates will also be required to successfully complete a Civil Service Exam (Frontline National Exam via NTN or Frontline National Exam on-site in Orlando in an exam coordinated by OPD as described above), interviews, polygraph exams, a background investigation, a psychological exam and a medical exam. Note: Applicants reaching the latter stages of the selection process will have their fingerprints taken for background check purposes. Fingerprints submitted by applicants will be retained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as part of the National Rap Back Service.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Police Sergeant, performs a wide variety of police and law enforcement duties including the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, crime prevention, preservation of the public peace, apprehension of criminals, and response to calls for service. This class is characterized by the use of independent judgment in the application of police principals, and knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Duties are performed in accordance with departmental orders, standard operating procedures, directives, and as directed by supervision.
Examples of Duties
* Patrols assigned area in patrol car, on foot, by bicycle, by motorcycle, to enforce laws, prevent and discover crimes, investigate crimes, assist citizens and maintain order.
* Responds to dispatched calls or citizens' requests for police services at the scene of accidents, domestic disputes, law violations, and public disturbances,
* Directs and controls traffic. Issues written citations for traffic and other minor violations.
* Investigates causes and results of accidents. Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments, and quells disturbances.
* Operates law enforcement vehicle during both the night and day in emergency situations in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
* Effectively communicates with people of varying ages, providing information, mediating disputes, and advising individuals of rights and processes. Maintains professional demeanor under stressful circumstances to include confrontational situations.
* Pursues fleeing suspects, which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles, running, climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, jumping down from elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, moving through confined areas, and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
* Locates, searches, and detains suspects. Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when force may be used and to what degree. Uses the continuum amount of force necessary to control an incident, affect an arrest, or protect the officer or others from harm.
* Performs searches of people, vehicles, building and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
* Interviews and questions victims, witnesses and suspects. Gathers and preserves evidence and information in criminal investigations. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions in accordance with departmental standards.
* Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include directing traffic for long period of time, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and carrying people away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from particular areas. May perform first aid and provide other assistance to victims.
* Prepares detailed incident, investigation, activity, and other police reports in compliance with proper police procedures.
* Conducts visual and audio surveillances for extended period of time.
* Utilizes community oriented policing strategies to develop partnerships and problem solving strategies to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.
* Transports prisoners to the County Jail; itemize prisoner property; complete necessary required forms when an arrest is made; obtain statements and affidavits from crime victims.
* Maintains proficiency with weapons and utilizes weapons in accordance with use of force standards.
* Performs miscellaneous duties: attend short briefings; obtain assignments and equipment; compile reports; appear in court for testimony; communicate with other officers, detectives, State Attorney's office, and other State and Local Agencies; maintain assigned equipment.
* Testifies in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations, and actions. Demonstrates effective communication skills in court and other formal settings.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
* Trains new PoliceOfficers
* Assists ambulance and fire department personnel.
* Fingerprints and photographs arrested subjects.
* Transports police cars to the City garage for repair.
* Resolves animal complaints and assist animal control officers.
* Seizes, impounds and confiscates vehicles and property.
Minimum Qualifications
* High school diploma or GED required.
* Must be at least 19 years of age and a United States citizen.
* Must pass physical fitness assessment, background investigation, and polygraph and psychological examinations.
* Candidates must pass Frontline testing consisting of Situational Judgment and Human Relations, Written Report Writing, and Reading Video-Based Tests, and pass a Physical Abilities Test.
* Candidates are responsible for paying a $30 Frontline testing fee.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
* Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Applicants may possess a valid out of state driver's license and obtain the Florida license within 10 days of employment.
* Must currently be certified as a PoliceOfficer in the State of Florida, currently attending a Florida CJSTC Basic Law Enforcement Recruit course or Equivalency of Training course, or possess a Letter of Acceptance to attend the next scheduled Florida CJSTC Basic Law Enforcement Recruit course or Equivalency of Training course.
* Must meet all FDLE requirements to be certified as a PoliceOfficer.

* Considerable knowledge of modern principles and practices of police work, the criminal justice process, laws and ordinances.
* Knowledge of emergency medical and first aid practices.
* Ability to analyze disputed and complex situations objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
* Ability to react quickly and calmly under dangerous and /or emergency conditions.
* Ability to obtain information through interviews, interrogations and observations and correctly document information per policy and legal guidelines.
* Ability to condense and organize large amounts of information into easily understood well typed remarks in a timely manner using accepted acronyms and type codes to facilitate efficient and accurate call processing.

* The nature of police work is such that all types of body positions are assumed to varying degrees; depending on the shift work and the nature of the calls, the officer may be required to assume positions of kneeling, crouching, crawling, or bending, or twisting in order to:
* Chase or apprehend a suspect in a narrow, small, or cramped space.
* Handcuff or restrain a suspect who is attempting to flee, particularly a suspect who has to be brought to the ground and searched.
* Maneuver around, through or under various kinds of obstacles.
