Complete State and County requirements of twenty hours of classroom and twenty hours of behind the wheel instruction. No reckless driving or driving under the influence convictions within five years and/or fewer than two moving violations within 12 months of employment. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Work is typically performed inside and around the exterior of a school bus. Frequent bending, stooping, crawling and climbing to inspect on and under a school bus is necessary. Occasional lifting of at least fifty pounds is required. Frequent contact with driver supervisors and students is required. Occasional contact with principals, parents and the general public is required. Occasional meetings with principals and parents are necessary. Person shall have no impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or an arm, and no other structural defects or limitation likely to interfere with the ability to control and safely drive a school bus. Must have the physical ability to operate the following controls on a school bus; open and close the service door which requires up to 25 psi exerted by the right hand and arm; activate the clutch pedal which requires up to 70 psi exerted by the left foot and leg; operate a manual transmission shift lever which requires up to 20 psi exerted by the right hand and arm; jump from or climb up to a least 3.5 feet, at the emergency door, to assist in the evacuation of the students. SUMMARY:
The Bus Driver drives students to and from school on a daily basis in a safe, efficient, and economical manner, and to extracurricular events on a non-regular basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
To conduct pre-trip inspection of school bus prior to every trip for defects;
To use established routes and designated bus stops;
To operate bus on approve time schedule;
To report bus accidents and student injuries to authorities;
To instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers;
To drive with safety of students as first priority;
To establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, teachers, students and principals;
To demonstrate knowledge of rules/regulations promulgated by local, state and federal authorities;
To demonstrate knowledge of state laws and local ordinances and;
To perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. As the Bus Driver/Trainer, you'll:
* Drive a City of Harrisonburg transit, paratransit, and school bus;
* Pick up and deliver passengers;
* Perform all related duties of a bus driver;
* Plan and assist in areas of bus driver training and safety;
* Provide classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training for all new driver candidates;
* Provide individualized training as required;
* Update and maintain all driver training curriculum guides and safety manuals;
* Monitor drivers with regard to safe operating practices and passenger safety;
* Notify appropriate personnel of safety violations;
* Maintain bus route records;
* Manage communication to bus drivers;
* Retrieve and submit bus surveillance videos;
* Attend and represent the department at various meetings;
* Assist with submitting related required reports.

Minimum Qualifications
* High school diploma or GED and considerable (3-5 years) experience as a transit, paratransit, or school bus driver. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
* A minimum of two years experience operating a school bus is required.
* Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia required. Passenger and School Bus endorsements required within six months from hire date.
* Must meet the requirements of Chapter 70-280 and 70-350 of the Virginia Administrative Code, as amended, and must have maintained a Class B Commercial Driver's License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia for two years prior to functioning as a driver trainer.
* Availability to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Manually operates passenger bus entrance door without difficulty while seated in the driver's seat.
Activates the brake with the right foot.
Moves from a seated position in the driver's seat to the rear or side of the bus where the emergency door is located, open the emergency door and exits the bus.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Keeps the bus clean inside and outside (mirrors, lights, lenses, etc).
Keeps up-to-date route sheets on the bus at all times.
