Qualifications:
21 years or older
Valid CDL Class A or B with passenger and airbrakes endorsement.
Minimum 3 years of driving experience (personal or professional)

Availability to workday, evening, weekend and overnight shifts as assigned.
Subject to a DOT drug testing and physical if applicable. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including cannabis, for any reason.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safely operates a school bus by assessing traffic and road conditions, monitoring student behavior and other factors necessary to safely deliver student passengers to and from school by adhering to state laws and school policies. Drivers will be evaluated on driving and student management skills annually.
Stops at authorized locations and transports only authorized passengers.Supervises safe loading and unloading of students. Updates routes and maps and adjusts timetables as necessary. Communicates all route changes and hazards to the appropriate personnel.
Performs bus safety pre-trip inspections as required by law to assure proper vehicle working condition. Maintains all safety equipment. Reports all accidents immediately. Adheres to safe work behaviors and promptly corrects unsafe conditions and/or behaviors which may lead to accidents. Drivers will be evaluated on pre-trip inspections annually.
Communicates to mechanics all defects and maintenance needs. Performs post-trip inspection to check for vandalism, lost articles or sleeping students. Fuels bus as necessary.
Organizes and performs bus evacuations and selects and trains bus safety assistants. Reports all stop arm violations to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Responsible for ensuring the safety of all students entering and exiting the bus by stopping all traffic in accordance with state law.
Monitors student behavior and provides written reports for all incidents of misconduct to the Director of Transportation. Communicates student conduct and route information to parents and school staff as necessary.
Maintains a safe and sanitary bus environment for students by sweeping and dusting the interior daily. Is responsible to ensure that the emergency lights are free of dirt and snow.
Attends and participates in in-service meeting(s) and completes certification training for CPR/First Aid.
Maintains driver licensing including CDL with school bus endorsement. Notifies supervisor immediately of any change in CDL license status and/or endorsements.
Performs daily record keeping activities such as pre-trip inspection forms, route surveys and route maps.
Performs other tasks as assigned.

Duties include carrying out those functions pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of assigned vehicles on routine and/or special service routes and paratransit schedules. Incumbents in this position work primarily in the field, operating transit buses, regardless of weather conditions.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Position is also subject to Wyoming Association of Risk Management (WARM) guidelines.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Operate all types of buses assigned for the purpose of transporting passengers. Operate wheelchair lift and assist patrons to board and alight safely.
* Provide professional, courteous assistance to passengers, including individuals with disabilities, ensuring ADA compliance and promoting a positive public image.
* Memorize routes, transfer points, and fare structures. Adhere to time schedules and routes. Keep and report accurate passengers counts.
* Maintain current knowledge of and is in strict compliance with Federal and Wyoming traffic laws and regulations as well as DOT rules and regulations. Maintain current knowledge of and adherence to all transit operating policies, directives, and procedures.
* Conduct self in an appropriate manner, working effectively in a diverse work environment, using prudent judgement always and assuring professional quality of services to all. Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
* Perform a complete and thorough pre-trip/post-trip and shift change inspection of bus and safety checks of equipment. Perform minor maintenance repairs as needed (fill washer fluid, add oil). Must be able to read chemical labels and follow safe handling procedures.
* Clean (sweep, empty trash, clean headlights and taillights and interior windows) and fuel bus daily and as needed.
* Complete accident/incident reports accurately and legibly, as necessary. Report hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and at passenger boarding areas, such as obstructions, construction, and potential criminal activity.
* Provide information and general assistance to passengers and the public regarding transit policies, procedures and processes in a professional manner.
* Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, accidents, or disruptive passengers, following all City and DOT procedures.
* Operate the bus efficiently to minimize fuel use and environmental impact.

Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination by obtaining a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate for a minimum of a 1-year qualifying period and then maintain certificate thereafter.
Preferred:
Thorough knowledge of the City of Cheyenne street systems.
One year of bus driving experience preferred
Customer service principles.
Defensive driving techniques.
Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local traffic laws and regulations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 50 pounds. As a condition of receiving City-funded CDL license training, employees must repay the City of Cheyenne two thousand nine hundred dollars ($2,900.00), the cost of training, in the event you resign, or you are terminated for cause within twenty-four (24) months following the date of issuance of the CDL from the state of Wyoming. If you voluntarily resign or are terminated for cause on or before the end of the month after the date of issuance of the CDL, you will be required to repay all or a portion of this depending on length of service to cover the cost of training. A CDL Training Reimbursement Agreement will provide additional details and will be provided during the interview process.
Working Environment:
Work closely with others in an outdoor environment utilizing technology that supports transit operations and other equipment. Is required to sit for long periods of time, works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.
