The Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, documentation, and distribution of surgical instrumentation and supplies used in the operating room. This position may also perform the duties of stocking supplies in pre and post-op areas.
This position is eligible for a $1,625 Sign On Bonus (amount pro-rated based on assigned FTE).
This is a part-time, 0.625 FTE opportunity that will be based at our Plymouth Surgery Center. Flexibility to float to other surgery centers as needed.
Schedule (10 hour shifts)
* Week 1: Tuesday, Friday
* Week 2: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
Nationally recognized Sterile Processing certification highly desired upon hire or must be obtained within 90 days of successful completion of educational/training program.
* Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment; inspects, assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments.
* Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
* Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
* Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory; submit requisitions; collects and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment.
* Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas.
* Verifies that equipment functions properly: completes requisitions for repair or replacement of surgical instrumentation; removes defective instrumentation from general service.
* Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
* Disposes of filled suction and trash containers.
* Documents all steps of the sterilization process accurately and legibly; maintains sterilization logs and organizes evidence of sterilization processes.
* Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
* Acts as staff resource in matters related to sterile processing.
Summit's hiring range for this position is $22.70 to $28.38 per hour. The hired candidate may be eligible to receive additional compensation in the form of bonuses, differentials and/or deferred compensation. Department Overview
The Sterile Processing Department at Children's Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis performs multiple functions that can be grouped under the following headings: decontamination; instruments and tray assembly; Preparation, Packaging, and Sterilization; Case Carts Assembly; Ad Hoc Dispensing of Patient Care Supplies; and Equipment Reprocessing, Tracking, and Dispensing.
Position Summary
Incumbent performs tasks associated with the reprocessing of reusable instruments, supplies, and equipment. Performs inventory management tasks involving reprocessed and single use equipment and supplies to all departments. The Sterile Processing Technician is thoroughly versed in surgical instrumentation. Supports the mission of Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in the care and treatment of patients following established customer service, family centered care, resource utilization and infection control standards.
* One year Central/Sterile Processing experience and/or experience in medical device reprocessing role or similar experience in an operating room.

Principle Responsibilities

* Assembles instrument sets and trays accurately.
* Packages and labels items for correct sterilization method.
* Performs work following safety standards and protocols
* Follows infection control guidelines when working in decontamination.
* Demonstrates appropriate use of washers/disinfectors, ultrasonic machine, high level disinfection and other department equipment.
* Operates sterilizers safely, documenting loads according to standards.
* Processes and interprets biological controls and tests per guidelines, documenting for each procedure.
* Reports potentially unsafe situations and malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or Lead.
* Conducts quality assurance checks on all required equipment per department guidelines.
* Provides support for Case Carts, Sterile Core and other areas as assigned
* Pulls cases for next day, add-on and emergency procedures accurately.
* Completes the appropriate paperwork for compliant charging and billing of case.
* Follows tasks assignment list when working in the sterile core.
* Responds to urgent requests with accuracy and efficiency.

Required Qualifications
* Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required principle competencies as listed on the job description
Preferred Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications

Compensation:
$18 - $22 hourly
Responsibilities:
Clean, sterilize, and disinfect dental instruments and equipment following OSHA, CDC, and clinic protocols.
Prepare and maintain sterilization logs to ensure proper documentation and compliance with infection control standards.
Set up and restock operatories with sterile instruments, trays, and supplies for dental procedures.
Inspect instruments for damage or wear and report any concerns to the clinical team.
Operate autoclaves and other sterilization equipment according to manufacturer and safety guidelines.
Maintain a clean and organized sterilization area, ensuring all surfaces are disinfected and supplies are properly stored.
Monitor inventory levels of sterile supplies and communicate needs for reordering or restocking.
Follow all safety protocols to protect patients and staff from cross-contamination or infection.
Assist clinical staff as needed with chairside setup, breakdown, and cleaning between patients.
Support compliance efforts related to OSHA, HIPAA, and internal infection control policies.
Qualifications:
Experience working with children.
Currently enrolled in dental assisting school or have experience working as an unlicensed assistant.

Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory; submit requisitions; collects and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment.
Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas.
Verifies that equipment functions properly: completes requisitions for repair or replacement of surgical instrumentation; removes defective instrumentation from general service.
Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
Disposes of filled suction and trash containers.
Documents all steps of the sterilization process accurately and legibly; maintains sterilization logs and organizes evidence of sterilization processes.
Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
Acts as staff resource in matters related to sterile processing.

Provides sterile equipment and supplies to surgery and other departments as required. This work includes decontamination, cleaning, sterilization and processing of supplies and equipment, following guidelines from federal and state agencies, manufacturer and hospital infection control.
Principle Responsibilities
* Demonstrates skill in preparation of surgical instruments
* Performs decontamination, assembly and sterilization of surgical instrumentation per department policy and procedures.
* Assures instruments are clean and free of foreign matter in preparation for
* sterilization.
* Assembles instrument sets and trays accurately.
* Packages and labels items for correct sterilization method.
* Performs work following safety standards and protocols
* Follows infection control guidelines when working in decontamination.
* Demonstrates appropriate use of washers/disinfectors, ultrasonic machine, high level disinfection and other department equipment.
* Operates sterilizers safely, documenting loads according to standards.
* Processes and interprets biological controls and tests per guidelines, documenting for each procedure.
* Reports potentially unsafe situations and malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or Lead.
* Conducts quality assurance checks on all required equipment per department guidelines.
* Provides support for Case Carts, Sterile Core and other areas as assigned
* Pulls cases for next day, add-on and emergency procedures accurately.
* Completes the appropriate paperwork for compliant charging and billing of case.
* Follows tasks assignment list when working in the sterile core.
* Responds to urgent requests with accuracy and efficiency.
* Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
* Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required principle competencies as listed on the job description
Preferred Qualifications
* High school diploma or GED
* Experience in Sterile Processing or Vocational/Technical training/education in Instrument Specialist, Central Supply, or Surgical Technology
Licenses/Certifications
* Must meet at least ONE of the requirements below:
* Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) within 18 months of hire
* Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST) Certification within 18 months of hire

Essential Functions:
* Demonstrates knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals and medical instruments sufficient to be able to decontaminate, assemble, wrap, and sterilize equipment, supplies, and instruments.
* Demonstrates knowledge of equipment function sufficient to be able to determine operational adequacy and to distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunction.
* Demonstrates basic computer and problem-solving skills
* Demonstrates knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection control and safety standards sufficient to be able to perform all assignments within the safety parameters.
