Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George's County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George's County residents.
Job Description
Under the regular supervision of the Central Sterile Supervisor, orders, receives, checks and stores medical supplies. Decontaminates and cleans reusable items and medical equipment according to Department procedures. Examines sterilized supplies for damage and expiration. Packages supplies for sterilization. May lead the work of less experienced technicians in the absence of the supervisor.
Principal Duties:
Retrieves, cleans, and decontaminates instruments, medical equipment, and supplies.
Dons appropriate protective attire:
Goggles/face mask/shield
Surgical hat (bouffant/cap)
Long sleeve gown
Utility gloves
Impervious shoe covers/booties
Disassembles, cleans, and inspects medical equipment (suction regulators, IV pumps, SCD machines, etc.) using hospital approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps & cleaners.
Disassembles, cleans, and inspects instrument sets and trays:
Pre-treats with hospital approved detergent/germicide.
Flush all cannulated instruments.
Load into washer/decontaminator according to manufacturer's instructions.
Empties and inspects case carts prior to loading in Hamo Cart Washer according to manufacturer's guidelines.
Removes, tags, and logs damaged instruments.
Sends any non-functioning equipment and/or damaged electrical plugs to Biomedical engineering.
Performs daily preventive maintenance on equipment according to manufacturers' guidelines.

Amsco 444 washer/decontaminator
Processes, assembles and sterilizes instruments, medical equipment, supplies, and linen.
Visually inspects equipment and instruments before preparing sets and trays; replaces missing or damaged instruments.
Visually inspects medical equipment and supplies to be sure all pieces are there and that they function properly.
Assembles and packages instruments, medical equipment, supplies and linen packs for sterilization per AAMI guidelines.
Sterilizes by either Ethylene Oxide gas or steam sterilization according to AAM1 guidelines. Handles items in such a manner that preserves the integrity of the package in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
Orders, receives, distributes and stores instruments, medical equipment, and supplies.
Checks for load control labels and equipment inspection labels to ensure current date and proper procedures.
Stores instruments, medical equipment, and supplies in a manner that preserves the integrity of the package in accordance with safety, AAMI, and infection control standards.
Prepares case carts accurately and completely within specified time based on ORSOS preference card and knowledge of procedure intended.
Prepares codes carts accurately and completely. Distributes to patient care units upon request.
Distributes instruments, medical equipment, and supplies per departmental requisition or inventory maintenance.
Assigns priority to emergency requests.
Distributes appropriate instrumentation, medical equipment, and supplies to meet patient age specific needs.
Performs and documents quality control measures.
Performs Bowie Dick and/or Biological tests on steam autoclaves/flash autoclaves and ETO sterilizer.
Reports test results to supervisor and initiates corrective steps as required.
Check screen and parameters.
Reruns Bowie Dick test.
If second Bowie Dick test -fails, machine is shut down and Biomedical Engineering notified.
Maintains control logs in accordance with infection control/AAMI standards.
Maintains a clean, organized and safe working environment:

Makes every effort to answer telephone calls within three rings, introducing him/herself, department and title (if appropriate). Asks permission before placing the caller on hold or using the speakerphone. If caller is transferred, gives the caller the extension number of the person he or she is being transferred to. Offers further assistance to the caller upon completing the conversation.
Maintains an appropriate voicemail message and when away from the office has an out-of-office email message that is brief, current, and includes name and department and offers the caller options if possible.
Returns email and voicemail messages promptly but no later than within one business day (24 hours).
Always mindful of voice and language in public.
Self Management:
Reports to work appropriately groomed and in compliance with the Hospital's dress code. Wears identification badge at all times at chest level and facing outwards so identification is clearly visible.

Complete specialty cart preparation;
Clean assigned secondary areas in accordance with aseptic principles; and

Perform basic principles of microbiology as they apply to medical supply operations, related to the resistance of microorganisms to external destructive agents such as heat, chemicals, and ionizing radiation.
Provide knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including characteristics of various detergents, cleaning techniques, sterilizing mediums, sterilizer operation and tests that determine effectiveness of sterilization. A thorough knowledge of packaging, storage and shelf-life characteristics.
Execute knowledge of the use, operation, assembly and disassembly of surgical instruments, medical devices, and specific cleaning, sterilizing and storage requirements of each.

Select the correct sterilization process according to the IFU (Instructions For Use) for the medical devices, either Hydrogen Peroxide (STERRAD and V-Pro), Ethylene Oxide (EO) or Steam sterilization processes.
Assemble and prepare the full range of specialty trays and instrument sets for the MOR, clinics, wards, and L&D for proper sterilization utilizing inventory sheets.
Determine the correct method of decontamination and sterilization; removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other gross contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and using ultrasonic and washer disinfecting equipment.
Become familiar with the operation of cleaning and sterilizing equipment. • Examine all items after decontamination/ pre-sterilization procedure to ensure that gross contaminants have been removed and that instruments function properly.

Responsible for cleaning and decontaminating medical equipment and instrumentation; preparing sterile procedure trays and equipment; operating steam, low temperature sterilizers, and any other type of sterilization equipment used within CSP; maintaining sterile / clean storage/ and all other department areas; answering phone and service door; delivering requested items; completing all required documentation on activities; maintaining the standards of the organizations mission, goals, and safety behaviors; and assisting in other areas as requested. Participate in the training and in- service programs for staff, and students. Assumes responsibility and accountability at all times for quality performance and represent the CSP department in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Completion of course from an accredited central service technician training is preferred.
Experience:
One year of sterile processing experience is preferred.

Sterile Processing Technicians 2 Job Responsibilities:
The Sterile Processing Tech 2 decontaminates instruments in a safe and appropriate manner.
Assembles instrumentation accurately and efficiently and ensures sterility of all processed items.
Maintains instruments inventory and ensures timely distribution of instruments to all customers. Prioritizes instruments and assembles complex trays.
Assumes a leadership role within the department.
Serves as a resource in at least 2 specialty areas/procedures.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or GED
Experience: One-year Sterile Processing experience required.
Certification CRCST or CBSPD certification from The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
