In this position, the incumbent will provide sterilization, preparation, supply items and reusable medical equipment, decontamination and distribution support for the medical center. The term "supply item" as used in this functional statement refers to disposable and reusable items for patient care including instrumentation, surgical trays and sets and various other items that could be processed or assembled through the Preparation and Decontamination areas of Sterile Processing Service. The Medical Supply Technician (MST) (Sterile Processing) - Advanced Level will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position. The Incumbent will assemble highly complex instrument sets used in the operating room and clinical setting including, but not limited to: open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy, thoracic and complex endoscopic instrumentation. Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in gastroenterology laboratory, bronchoscopy laboratory, urology and operating room. Reviews manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing RME. Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment, as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment. Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: * Knowledge of standard precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. * Knowledge of event-related packaging in regard to sterility. * Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. * Knowledge of sterility principles in regard to instrumentation. * Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. * Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in decontamination area. * Disassembles RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions. * Inspects, prepares, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, plasma, hydrogen peroxide and high-level disinfection. * May be required to prepare operating room case carts daily utilizing the surgery schedule, applying the knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. * Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing using the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to avoid any cross contamination. * Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization. * Assembles basic and specialty instrument sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room. * Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection RME. * Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes. * Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. * Receives guidance from Supervisor. Entry-level dental position responsible for ensuring proper sterilization of instruments and disinfections of dental equipment and treatment rooms to assist dental assistants, dental hygienist and or dentist as needed. Experience Minimum 2 Years of Experience in Sterile Processing Essential Functions • Works directly with Surgery Clinical staff and managers to assess, troubleshoot and make recommendations for all trauma and tertiary care surgical procedures. • Demonstrates, through clinical practice, knowledge, and a clear understanding of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument functional quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique. • Has high professional and ethical standards that are employed in making critical decisions in every aspect of the sterilization process. • The Sterile Processing Technician III is resource and mentor for the SP team and for the surgical clinical team. • Assumes lead role in the absence of Manager and/or Coordinator. • Participates in distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the requirements of the surgery schedule, pick lists and surgeon's preference cards. • Demonstrates through practice a clear understanding of the instrumentation utilized during surgical procedures. • Responsible for daily record keeping and chemical, mechanical, & biological monitoring relative to sterilization processes. • Conducts orientation of new team members. • Works as the patient's advocate regarding the most correct and safest form of sterilization for all patient care instrumentation and equipment. • Assures that through specific infection control procedures a safe environment is maintained. • Determines the best method of processing ever changing, highly technical tertiary patient care instrumentation and equipment. • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards. • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures
