Key Responsibilities As a CPT Rig Operator, you will: Rig Operations: Safely mobilize, set up, operate, and demobilize CPT rigs at various project sites. Data Acquisition: Conduct CPT soundings per project specifications and industry standards, ensuring precise collection of tip resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), and pore water pressure (u2) data. Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, proactive troubleshooting, and minor repairs to CPT rigs and associated equipment (e.g., cones, rods, hydraulic systems). Calibration: Assist with or execute regular calibration checks of CPT cones and data acquisition systems to guarantee data accuracy. Safety Compliance: Strictly adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations. Conduct daily safety checks, actively participate in tailgate safety meetings, and promptly report any hazards or incidents. Documentation: Accurately complete daily field logs, sounding reports, maintenance records, and all other required documentation. Site Management: Maintain a clean, organized, and environmentally compliant work area. Collaboration: Work effectively with project managers, geotechnical engineers, field technicians, and other team members to achieve project goals. Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve operational issues or data anomalies during CPT sounding. Mobility: Be prepared for frequent travel to various job sites, including remote locations and challenging terrains, potentially involving extended periods away from home. Qualifications Education Required: High School Diploma or GED. Preferred: Technical schooling or vocational training in heavy equipment operation, mechanics, or a related field. A Plus: Degree in Geology or a related field with a concentration in soils. Experience Required: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience operating heavy equipment, preferably within the geotechnical, drilling, or construction industry. Highly Preferred: Prior experience specifically operating CPT rigs. A Plus: Familiarity with various CPT cone types (e.g., standard, piezocone, seismic cone). Technical Skills Proficient in reading and interpreting project plans, specifications, and safety guidelines. Basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment. Familiarity with data logging software and basic computer skills for data transfer. Certifications/Licenses Required: Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record. Preferred/Required (depending on rig size): CDL (Class A or B). Highly Desirable: OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Construction Safety certification. A Plus: First Aid/CPR certification. The Thompson Internship Program is an 8-12 week program for college students (working towards a degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Structural, or Environmental Engineering) to learn and gain professional work experience. The intern program is designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related tasks relevant to their field of study. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of alternatives. DUTIES Learning what constitutes best management practices and applying it to his/her work. Using computers, handbooks, drawing instruments, etc. Performing basic design calculations within his/her discipline. Performing neat, accurate, and productive work. Assisting in preliminary design studies, project planning, and related activities that lead to the design of a project. Assisting in the preparation of specifications, cost and material estimates, reports, and studies. Preparing design, detail, and layout drawings and design sketches. Checking designs prepared by others. Utilizing computers and CAD in the design effort. Recognizing his/her limitations and asking for help when needed. Following company policies and procedures regarding safety and quality. Other duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Requirements Must have completed sophomore year working towards a degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Structural, or Environmental Engineering. EIT is preferred The ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally, graphically and in writing. Physical Requirements Must be willing to work flexible schedules and overtime if required. Must be able to operate a computer and sit for long periods of time. Ability to work in the field or outside, able to bend, stoop, climb and walk on uneven terrain and pavements, concrete, grass, dirt and gravel. This position is well-suited for a technical seller/doer who can manage projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to business development. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage environmental site assessments (Phase I & II ESAs), UST closures, and site characterization projects in accordance with state and federal regulations. Design and implement soil and groundwater sampling programs; interpret geologic and hydrogeologic data. Oversee UST removals, upgrades, assessments, and prepare closure reports and corrective action plans. Manage federal environmental projects. Prepare technical reports, including geologic logs, cross-sections, contaminant transport models, and remediation summaries. Coordinate with regulatory agencies (e.g., ADEM, MDEQ, FDEP, LDEQ, TCEQ, EPA) to ensure compliance and facilitate approvals/closures. Evaluate and select remedial technologies (e.g., in-situ chemical oxidation, dual-phase extraction, biosparging). Manage subcontractors, field personnel, and drilling teams during fieldwork. Mentor junior geologists and field staff. Ensure health and safety compliance in field operations (HAZWOPER 40-hour certification required). Support business development through proposals, scopes of work, and client communications.
