The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for performing routine work assignments involving the daily care and welfare of animals within their area. This position also performs daily maintenance of animal habitats and holding areas, as well as interacts with the public to provide information related to the Zoo & Aquarium's animal collection.
This position will work with the Water's Edge Team, which is responsible for the daily husbandry of polar bears, California sea lions, southern sea otters, North American river otters, five species of penguins (King, Gentoo, Chinstrap, Macaroni, Humboldt) and trumpeter swans.
POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, zoology, or related field preferred.
Applicable experience can be substituted in place of formal education on a year-for-year basis for candidates not currently holding a degree.
EXPERIENCE:
Previous hands-on experience with the care and management of similar species strongly preferred.
Knowledge of animal husbandry, behavior, procedures for proper care, and training of exotic animals.
Strong observational skills to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health, diets, and behavior.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, required.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, including procedures for care and maintenance of animals, habitats, service and holding areas.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must have or be willing to obtain a SCUBA certification within six months of hire.
Open Water SCUBA certification from an internationally recognized certifying agency is preferred.
Must pass AAUS-compliant dive physical and swim test within six months of hire.
Dive tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use tools (e.g. brushes) and operate equipment (e.g. operation/manipulation of dive gear).
Must be willing to dive in cold temperatures and in the presence of animals (sharks, penguins, venomous fish).
Must have valid driver's license.
Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have sufficient mobility to ensure a safe work environment.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Must be able to manage stress, endure high risk situations when feeding, transferring, or restraining animals, and make immediate decisions concerning the safety of animals, staff, or the public.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
Must pass a background and drug screening.

Monmouth Small Animal Hospital began in 1989. In 2007, we found that our ever-growing business needed to be expanded, so we had a major remodel done. We doubled the size of our practice, including 3 exam rooms, a large lobby, and a surgery suite with an attached treatment/pre-op/post-op room.
Today, our full-service veterinary team cares for a range of small animals, including dogs, cats, birds, and beyond.

If you like surgery but feel you need more mentorship, we do TONS of soft tissue surgery, C-sections and orthopedic surgeries (want special training in TPLO?!)
We see a diverse range of medical cases including theriogenology; we're one of the only reproduction specialists in the area. We are equipped with digital radiography, ultrasound, and laser therapy; and are willing to get any equipment that you need if we don't already have it.

Our new DVM would have no issue quickly establishing their own clientele base with both existing and new patients.
At our practice, we stress work-life balance. Most doctors average a 3.75-day work week and have a 3-day weekend every other weekend! Position Purpose
At Randall Oaks Animal Hospital in Carpentersville, IL we're looking to add a full-time or part-time veterinarian to our team! We are currently a two-doctor, small animal practice that opened our doors in 2002. We're lucky to have a support staff that is loyal to our practice and clients, and most have been with us for over 10 years. Even at our busiest, we maintain a casual and relaxed work environment!
Our doctors' clinical interests include internal medicine, general surgery and dentistry to name a few. We welcome any new or recent graduates, and are happy to provide a strong mentorship program. Our current patients consist of dogs and cats, although we're open to adding exotic species if you have an interest. For any DVMs that enjoy shelter medicine, we partner with a local foster-based rescue and help with examinations weekly.

Essential Responsibilities
Examine and treat companion animals to detect and determine the nature of disease or injuries.
