Whitman-Walker Health company history timeline

1978

Founded as an affirming health center for the gay and lesbian community in 1978, Whitman-Walker was one of the first responders to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in D.C. and became a leader in HIV/AIDS education, prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

1983

As early as 1983, the clinic staffed the first AIDS hotline in the city, and within two years, it opened multiple homes for people with AIDS. In addition, Whitman-Walker was at the forefront of designing and distributing safer-sex materials that targeted a range of audiences.

1986

Whitman-Walker purchased its former property in 1986 for $1.25 million.

1987

In 1987, with funding from the United States Conference of Mayors, the Seattle-based Northwest AIDS Foundation launched the “Please Be Safe” campaign to help gay and bisexual men reimagine their sexual behaviors.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt was first displayed in the nation’s capital in 1987.

1991

According to the Post, the clinic began to apply for grant money totaling $3 million in 1991.

1994

And they were right." By 1994, the clinic had purchased additional property and expanded its operations, and the clinic "that used to represent death adjusted to caring for people living long-term with HIV," according to the Post.

2010

The passage of Obamacare in 2010 marked the beginning of an enormous surge in the need for insurance navigation assistance.

2012

By 2012, the quilt had grown to more than 48,000 panels.

2015

Our first strategic decision was moving our medical operations to 1525 14th Street in 2015.

2018

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, officially January 13, 2018, it wanted to explore that history through the voices of its community in a project titled 40 Stories for 40 years.
