Maintenance Procurement Specialist - Food Manufacturing
Frederick, MD job
Ready to be the critical link between maintenance teams and production uptime at a rapidly expanding artisan bakery?
Our client, an established mid-size food manufacturer in Frederick, MD, is doubling production capacity from four to eight automated lines. They need an experienced Maintenance Procurement Specialist who understands that when equipment goes down, every minute costs money-and the right parts procurement strategy prevents that from happening.
This isn't about ordering flour or packaging materials. You'll be sourcing motors, PLCs, conveyors, and OEM parts that keep specialized bakery equipment running 24/7.
About Our Client
Our client is a locally-owned artisan bakery with multiple automated production lines, known for their quality-focused, safety-first, and collaborative engineering culture. They're in a significant growth phase, expanding their Frederick facility to meet increasing demand while maintaining their commitment to operational excellence.
Your Impact
As Maintenance Procurement Specialist, you'll eliminate maintenance delays by ensuring critical spare parts are available when needed-whether for scheduled PMs, emergency breakdowns, or major equipment shutdowns. Your procurement decisions directly impact production uptime, equipment reliability, and the bottom line. Success means fewer delays, optimized inventory levels, and stronger supplier partnerships that support a growing operation.
What You'll Do
Strategic Procurement & Supplier Management:
Source and purchase mechanical, electrical, and automation spare parts (motors, bearings, PLCs, VFDs, conveyors, pumps, valves) for specialized bakery production equipment
Negotiate pricing, lead times, and service agreements with OEM and industrial MRO suppliers to achieve cost savings while maintaining quality
Create, manage, and expedite purchase orders using ERP and CMMS systems to support maintenance schedules
Qualify and evaluate supplier performance on quality, delivery, and cost metrics
Maintenance Operations Support:
Partner directly with maintenance technicians and planners to identify parts needed for preventive maintenance programs, emergency repairs, and planned shutdowns
Coordinate purchasing activities with CMMS work orders and maintenance schedules to ensure zero-delay parts availability
Support major equipment shutdowns by preparing spare parts kits and coordinating vendor resources
Act as liaison between maintenance, engineering, and finance teams on procurement matters
Inventory & Data Management:
Manage critical spare parts inventory including establishing min/max levels, safety stock, and reorder points based on usage analysis
Maintain accurate part data, BOMs, pricing, and vendor information in ERP/CMMS systems
Conduct inventory analysis to reduce obsolete stock by 15-20% and identify equipment standardization opportunities
Resolve receiving discrepancies, quality issues, and invoice problems with vendors
Compliance & Continuous Improvement:
Ensure all procurement activities comply with food safety standards (GMP, SQF/BRC) and OSHA requirements
Track and report on purchasing metrics including cost savings, supplier performance, and inventory turnover
Identify process improvements to increase procurement efficiency and reduce emergency purchasing by 30%
Prepare documentation for ISO audits and maintenance performance reviews
What You Bring
Required:
3-5 years of purchasing/procurement experience specifically supporting maintenance operations in a manufacturing plant environment
Hands-on experience working directly with maintenance technicians, planners, or engineers to procure industrial spare parts and equipment
Strong proficiency with ERP systems for procurement (Microsoft Dynamics strongly preferred; SAP, Infor, Oracle, or similar acceptable)
Working knowledge of CMMS systems (Upkeep, Maximo, SAP PM, eMaint, or similar) and how they integrate with purchasing workflows
Solid understanding of industrial maintenance components: motors, bearings, conveyors, PLCs, pumps, valves, sensors, and automation equipment
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for purchasing analysis, spend reporting, and inventory management
Preferred:
Food, beverage, or consumer packaged goods manufacturing experience (knowledge of GMP and food safety compliance)
Associate or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or related field
Experience with shutdown planning, spare parts kitting, and supporting automated production equipment
Track record of cost reduction initiatives and supplier consolidation projects
Familiarity with OEM vs. aftermarket sourcing strategies for industrial equipment
Who Thrives in This Role
You might currently be a Maintenance Storeroom Buyer, Plant Buyer supporting maintenance, Maintenance Planner with purchasing responsibilities, or Materials Coordinator in a manufacturing environment. You understand production urgency, speak the language of maintenance teams ("We need that bearing for Line 3 by tomorrow"), and know how to balance cost savings with equipment uptime. You're comfortable walking the plant floor, getting your hands dirty when inspecting parts, and negotiating firmly but fairly with suppliers.
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive compensation package based on experience including:
Base salary commensurate with qualifications
Comprehensive health insurance (eligible first of month following 60 days of service)
Dental insurance
401(k) retirement plan with company matching contributions
Paid time off

Work with specialized bakery equipment and automated production systems
Stable, locally-owned company with direct community impact in Frederick
Collaborative engineering and maintenance culture that values procurement's role
Work Environment
Full-time, on-site position at our client's Frederick, MD manufacturing facility (Monday-Friday schedule). You'll split time between plant floor interactions with maintenance teams and office work for procurement activities, supplier communication, and reporting. Manufacturing environment includes exposure to production equipment, moderate noise levels, and temperature variations. May require lifting up to 50 lbs when receiving or inspecting incoming parts.
What Success Looks Like
First 30 days: Master ERP/CMMS systems, build relationships with maintenance technicians and planners, understand critical equipment and common failure modes, meet key suppliers
