These college level classes are generally held on site after or before the apprentice's regular paid work hours. Classroom hours are unpaid and, on the apprentice's, own time. A normal academic load is about three hours of classroom instruction per week. Apprentices are required to maintain minimum cumulative average of 80% and failure of any course will result in removal from the program. Homework is assigned in each class and it is the responsibility of the apprentice to complete the assignments outside the normal workday.
What You will Do
Depending on the trade, apprentices (or pre-apprentices) will learn to build vessel structures, hull components, piping systems, machinery installations and alignments, and prepare surfaces for painting or structural welding. The exact functions and responsibilities will vary by trade, and cannot be enumerated for all trades in this posting. For illustration, however, Marine Pipefitters fabricate and install all the piping systems on the ship. Ship Fitter/ Fabricators fabricate and install the many pieces that make up the hull of the ship and install equipment foundations and miscellaneous structural pieces. Interest in working in an electrical industrial environment or previous work exp. strongly preferred.
Current First Aid certification preferred.
May be required to meet facial hair standards in accordance with OSHA's Respiratory Protection standard (29 CFR 1910.34).
Duties and Responsibilities
The Apprentice Electrician possessing the education and experience listed above performs the following:
Safely operate and maintain company vehicles as required for job duties, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company policies.
Learn from the Journeyman Electrician and completes all assigned duties.
Assists with installation of electrical systems per blueprints, construction drawings, and NEC codes in commercial buildings and industrial facilities.
Pull wire, install conduit, lighting systems, panels, and other electrical components according to project specs and under the direction of a Journeyman.
Identify, analyze, troubleshoot, and assist with repairs of equipment and electrical faults.
Learn and apply safe work practices, following site-specific and company safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, PPE protocols, etc.
Travels out to various public and private spaces to assist the Journeyman Electrician, maintaining job site organization, cleanliness, and tool accountability
Read and interprets blueprints schematics, and site plans under guidance.
Record update work logs, clients' accounts, and handles other administrative duties.
Communicates with clients in a professional, courteous manner at all times.
Coordinate tasks and work alongside other trades and subcontractors in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment
Attend safety briefings and site meetings as required.
Respond to direction from Foreman, Journeymen, and Project Managers.
Maintains punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.
Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
Respectfully takes direction from the manager

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
The candidate must possess and be adaptable to the following physical abilities and working conditions:
Move about the jobsite.
Move work related equipment up to 50lbs.
Remain in a stationary position for long periods of time.
Operate various technological devices, including a computer and cell phone.
Occasionally ascend/descend ladders and/or stairs, working at heights and operating lifts as needed
Travel approximately 25% or more, some overnight stays may be required per customer needs (company to pay for accommodation and per diem).
Perform duties in an industrial and/or construction environment, where noise levels are high at times and may involve confined spaces.

This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Placement on the faculty salary schedule will be commensurate with educational background and experience. Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the department.
