Our client is a manufacturer that produces nutritional supplements. They focus on developing high-quality, science-driven products while maintaining stringent quality and regulatory standards. They are currently expanding their team and looking to bring on a Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations). Salary/Hourly Rate: $85k - $90k Position Overview: The Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations) will develop and support oil-based dietary supplement formulations, including oil suspensions, lipid systems, and softgel-compatible fills. This hands-on role works closely with Product Development, Quality, Operations, Purchasing, and Sales to bring new products from concept through commercialization. Responsibilities of the Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations): * Formulate and optimize oil-based products for dietary supplements and foods. * Support additional dosage forms as needed (liquids, capsules, powders). * Troubleshoot formulation and processing issues during development and scale-up. * Source ingredients, support formulation costing, and assess feasibility. * Maintain formulation records and support QA documentation. * Perform and assist with QC testing (GC, HPLC, ICP-MS). * The Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations) will run bench-top, pilot, and scale-up batches. * Maintain lab equipment, materials, and documentation. * Collaborate cross-functionally to meet project timelines. Required Experience/Skills for the Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations): * 3+ years of product development experience in dietary supplements, food, or cosmetics. * Strong experience with oil-based formulation and lipid systems. * Knowledge of natural product chemistry and formulation costing. * Strong documentation, organization, and communication skills. * Ability to manage multiple projects independently. Preferred Experience/Skills for the Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations): * The Scientist (Oil-Based Formulations) should ideally have GMP and DSHEA familiarity. * Scale-up and commercialization experience. POSITION PURPOSE The Scientist II plays a key role in advancing product development and formulation within the surface care portfolio to support business objectives. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES Research and Innovation: * Conduct research and experiments in support of innovation and continuous improvement. * Assist and support in concept development. * Prepare technical reports, analyze data, and ensure application of strong scientific principles. * Demonstrate a strong understanding of chemistry and Good Laboratory Practices. * Awareness of intellectual property concepts including confidentiality, data integrity and invention disclosure. Identifies potentially novel work and contributes with guidance. Formulation Product Development: * Formulate and develop new products and technologies based on relevant market insights in support of Environment of care portfolio initiatives. * Act as R&D Formulation lead in cross functional project teams and support the achievement of key project milestones and deliverables. * Batch lab-scale formulations and manage stability studies. * Assist in product scale-up and line trials. * Provide guidance and support to QC. * Develop and maintain products in compliance with regulatory and quality requirements. Product Testing and Analysis: * Calibrate instrumentation, help troubleshoot equipment, and maintain laboratory supplies. * Assist in the development and validation of test methods, SOPs and technical documentation. * Test raw materials, products and prototypes, comparing them to benchmarks or competitor products. * Analyze data, prepare technical reports, and contribute to scale-up trial report generation. * Performs root cause, investigation and failure analysis where necessary. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION * Bachelor's degree in chemistry (or related field). * Master's an advantage REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE * Previous experience in an R&D lab. * Familiarity with regulatory guidelines and laboratory procedures. * Strong understanding of chemistry and Good Laboratory Practices. Support the R&D activities to deliver the brand's program, ranging from innovation, renovation, quality and nutrition improvement and cost savings initiatives. Support the technical discussions in cross functional meetings and represent the R&D view for the project team to technical and non-technical audiences. Support the technical risk assessments and provide recommendations on risk mitigation plans. Design and execute test protocols for the various technical aspects of projects as required (e.G., prototype development and scale-up, shelf-life testing, analytical testing, performance testing, etc.). Support and drive the process of specification/label creation in SAP PLM from initial request through approved status including lower order specifications/new ingredient specifications and artwork brief generation. Organize and participate in trials, providing onsite monitoring and technical assistance, while providing formulation adjustment recommendations as needed. Analyze and interpret data with guidance on final conclusions incl the ability to prepare comprehensive trial/lab reports and presentations, including recommendations and next steps. Support cost savings (5S) initiatives and supply chain efficiency projects to support quality, cost savings, and complexity reduction initiatives. Assess feasibility of new ideas and troubleshoot activities where formulation knowledge is essential. Support technical investigations using root-cause analysis and problem-solving techniques as required for existing and new products. Provide product expertise and insights into innovation and activation strategies. Be a product ambassador internally and externally, demonstrate awareness of operator insights and needs/behavior. Develop and maintain strong working relationships and communicate effectively across R&D and non-R&D functions (with key business and strategic vendor partners) to support business initiatives KEY REQUIREMENTS Education: Bachelors of Science in Food Science or equivalent degree. Relevant Experience: 3-5 years of experience in the food industry, preferably in product development, processing, and/or project management. Experience with SAP PLM/Minerva, specification creation and approval process, demonstrated knowledge/experience in Cooking Aids technology, and good understanding of Supply Chain. Food Service business preferred.
