    Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. * Fulfill all duties related to his/her assignment as directed by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the United States Department of Justice. This includes, but is not limited to, all policies in accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), Texas Family Code, Bell County Employee Handbook, and Bell County Juvenile Services policies and procedures. * Must have the ability to work with a diverse population. * Conduct searches of persons and facilities as required to control contraband. * Always maintain his/her appearance and appropriate professional behavior. * Provides shift coverage as scheduled AND on an On-Call basis. * Address behavioral issues/concerns of residents to ensure compliance and understanding while fostering a proactive and positive environment. * Assist staff during any situation that requires the use of Handle with Care (the Department/Program recognized physical restraint/behavior modification system) and the department approved behavior management program. * Work a schedule that will involve working weekends, evenings, or nights (shift work). * Supervise residents in program activities such as meals, showers, school, indoor and outdoor recreation, and parental visitation. * Perform housekeeping tasks as needed to maintain facility cleanliness. * Maintain daily activity logs and reports as required. * Write discipline and or incident reports as required. * Notify immediate supervisor at least two hours prior to shift if calling in sick. * Perform other related duties as may be assigned. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: be at least 21 years of age; have no disqualifying criminal history; have no criminal history as described in §344.410(a) unless TJJD has reviewed it and determined the person is not ineligible for certification due to the criminal history; have acquired a high school diploma or its equivalent as specified in TAC§344.204; never have had any type of certification revoked by TJJD; complete the training required by TAC§344; and pass the certification exam. Other Qualifications: Regular attendance is essential. Incumbent must arrive at work on time, prepared to perform assigned duties and work assigned schedule.     Summary of Essential Responsibilities: The primary function of a Juvenile Probation Officer is to provide professional casework services to assigned clients in accordance with the Texas Family Code, departmental policies and other governing criteria as appropriate. Officers are responsible for identifying client problems and needs and developing rehabilitative measures for the client while also providing supervision and behavioral controls. They should have a thorough knowledge of their cases and be able to support their recommendations and requests from a sound database. They should also have good communication skills in order to intelligently present information to the courts or other agencies. Officers Attitude: Officers should have a sound knowledge and understanding of social, environmental, family and other factors, which are commonly acknowledged to be factors in the behavior of juvenile offenders. They should be able to take an empathetic approach to dealing with juveniles and their families and, hence, deal with assigned cases in a realistic manner. Assist with transportation of youth as needed. Regular attendance is required. Maintain 80 hours biannually of approved training to maintain juvenile probation officer certification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have knowledge of the laws, principles, programs, functions and services governing the juvenile justice system and detention. Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations; and ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals; and ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, attorneys, judges, client, families and the general public. Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; and ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; and ability to interpret an extensive variety of information and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in criminology, criminal justice, social work, psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university Never had any type of certification revoked by lawful authority by the commission and not be currently under an order of suspension as described in 344.840(d) of chapter 344 of the Administrative Code. Must possess the work experience or graduate study required in section 344.210 of the Administrative Code. Must be certified or eligible for certification through the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Must meet NCIC/TCIC employment guidelines. Must have valid driver's license. Must have computer proficiency. Must successfully complete a background check and sex offender check. Be of good moral character. Must be at least 21 years of age. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. * Assist in the preventative maintenance and repair of County facilities in the following fields of work: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, structural systems, and Fire Alarm systems. * Procures compatible materials and tools required to perform maintenance, repair, and construction-related functions. * Performs complex maintenance and diagnostic services for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and similar systems maintenance, repair or construction of county facilities or structures. * Estimates and procures compatible materials and tools required to perform maintenance, repair and construction-related functions. * Installs, maintains and repairs of surveillance systems. * Maintains appropriate work records and documents, including work orders and formal and informal inspections. * Prepares and processes daily work reports, inspection reports, work orders, requisitions, sketches, etc. * Plans the layout of wiring and installs wiring, conduit, and electrical apparatus in buildings. * Inspects facilities to identify maintenance and repair requirements and priorities. * Respond to emergency and non-emergency service calls, diagnoses problems and makes minor repairs. * Performs related work as required. * Adequate attendance is required. * Required to work in a detention facility performing facility maintenance.
