Job Summary: This position is responsible for performing a full range of law enforcement duties in any of the bureaus of the Sheriff's Office, including, but not limited to the following: patrol, civil, crime prevention, community outreach, investigation, transportation, court security, administrative, support or jail. The incumbent may be assigned temporarily to a specialty area within the agency based on needs. A certified sheriff's deputy may hold the rank of Certified Deputy I, Certified Deputy II, or Certified Deputy III, depending on qualifications.
A certified deputy sheriff may be assigned to duties in any Sheriff's Office bureau. Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority. Major duties may include any of the following tasks:
Patrol Assignment:
• Maintains law and order and protects life and property.
• Receives and responds to dispatch calls; investigates and takes appropriate action on assigned calls.
• Conducts security checks of businesses, parks, public buildings, industrial areas and residences.
• Maintains traffic control through observation and the use of speed detection devices.
• Detains and tests drivers suspected of driving under the influence.
• Issues citations and/or makes arrests for violations of laws and ordinances; prepares incident reports
• Attends and testifies in court on cases investigated or reports written.
• Respond to natural and man-made disasters.
• Transports prisoners.
• Locates defendants and serves criminal warrants.
• Assists with crowd control and security assignments at various public gatherings or incident scenes.
• Reports hazardous conditions on public roadways and bridges, and conducts surveillance.
• Provides assistance to the public as needed. Provides information and guidance regarding victim's rights.
• Works with code enforcement.
• Conducts and prepares investigations of vehicle accidents.
• Assesses victims, rendering aid to the injured prior to emergency medical services arrival.
• Requests assistance from other agencies, including fire, emergency medical, and tow services.
• Directs traffic at the scene; prepares accident reports.
• Processes arrested persons following established procedures and renders aid to other law enforcement personnel.
• Attends/participates in roll call, including inspection and training; participates in training programs to improve knowledge and skills.
• Performs specialized short or long-term assignments including administrative, technical, and investigative duties as required.
• May serve as field training officer.
• Works with the public, civic organizations, etc. in conducting community activities.
Jail Assignment:
• Receives, searches, books, and places prisoners in appropriate cells.
• Receives and safeguards inmates' personal property. Maintains security and control in receiving, visitation, and other jail areas.
• Transports inmates to activities outside the jail. Conducts inspections and counts.
• Controls inmates' daily activities including meals. Distributes medications. Screens items going in and out of cells. Supervises, counsels, and evaluates inmates assigned as trustees, provides inmate information to the courts, other staff members, and other law enforcement agencies, and maintains a variety of records and logs.
Civil/Warrants Assignment:
• Determines the proper method for legal service of a process.
• Prepares schedules to ensure time and efficient routing of processes to be served.
• Serves processes; locates persons no longer at locations given.
• Executes court-issued writs and orders by seizing property; checking evicted location or physically removing occupants from premises.
• Supervises transportation of seized property to storage area.
• Prepares various reports and forms.
Community Outreach Assignment:
• Maintains peace within controlled school and community settings.
• Investigate school and community incidents. Collects evidence and property, and completes incident and accident reports. Serves warrants. Testifies in court. Gathers victim, defendant, and witness information.
• Prepares and delivers oral presentations in school and community settings, works with at-risk populations, analyzes data on crime trends and citizen complaints, and determines appropriate responses.
• Plans and organizes community involvement, and participates in problem-solving activities aimed at reducing crime and increasing community safety.
Court/Transport Assignment:
• Maintains order and ensures the security and safe condition of the courthouse and courtrooms.
• Assures the safety of jurors and the public; escorts prisoners to and from the courtroom and maintains control of prisoners during trial.
• Maintains control of the audience and removes disorderly persons as required.
• Guards deliberating jury to preclude outside influence.
• Guards and secures County buildings and facilities.
• Maintains court procedure records.
• Transports prisoners to and from court, other jurisdictions or institutions, and clinics and hospitals for medical and psychological treatments.
Administrative / Support:
• Performs maintenance to Sheriff's Office and Jail building and grounds; and vehicles.
• Oversees inmate workers on work details.
• Assists with administrative duties and research as assigned.
Knowledge Required by the Position:
• Knowledge of law enforcement concepts and terminology, including jail operations, criminal investigation, law enforcement, and crime prevention; first-aid principles and techniques; report preparation and record keeping; and human behavior theories related to criminology, crisis intervention, and crowd control.
• Knowledge of laws and court decisions pertaining to law enforcement, including search and seizure, suspects and prisoner's rights, and custody and protection of evidence; operational principles and practices of criminal investigation, law enforcement, and crime prevention; court and trial procedures.
• Knowledge of the use and effects of law enforcement weapons; methods of self-defense and physical restraint.
• Knowledge of Sheriff's Office organization, policies, and procedures; geographic layout of Rockdale County; vocabulary of technical/specialized fields of law enforcement such as identification, detention, and pathology.
• Skill in learning, interpreting, applying, and explaining complex laws and regulations; reading and interpreting documents such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks.
• Skill in performing accurate mathematical calculations; comprehending and retaining factual information and applying what is learned.
• Skill in observing and remembering details of events, names, faces, numbers, and physical descriptions; preparing and maintaining clear, accurate, and concise reports and files.
• Skill in communicating effectively in both verbal and written form; exercising tact, self-restraint, judgment, and strategy in dealing with people of all races, ethnicities, and socio-economic groups and who may have emotional or physical difficulties.
• Skill in exercising sound independent judgment in emergency or stressful situations; correctly interpreting a given situation and taking appropriate action under a variety of conditions.

Supervisory Controls: The bureau commander or his/her designee assigns work in terms of agency goals and objectives. The work is reviewed through reports and observation of activities.
Guidelines: Guidelines include applicable laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures related to public safety communications and law enforcement standards. These guidelines require sound judgment and interpretation in application.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers, business leaders, educators, attorneys, representatives of the judicial system, federal state, and local law enforcement officers, inmates, and the general public.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, influence/motivate persons, justify/settle matters, coordinate work efforts, and provide services.
Physical Demands: Work may be sedentary in the office environment and/or fieldwork may subject the incumbent to extended periods of physical and mental exertion under highly stressful conditions. The person must be able to remain calm and think logically when defending himself/herself from imminent danger, apprehending suspects of crimes, etc. The person must be able to load, unload, aim, and operate firearms. The individual must have correctable hearing, visual, and speaking abilities to perform assigned duties. The person must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods; walk, run, kneel, stoop, crawl, and crouch; make precise and coordinated finger, hand and limb movements; maintain uniform, controlled hand-arm posture or movement; push, pull or drag an adult (averaging 5'6", 160 pounds); lift and carry boxes of evidence (average 50 pounds); use force to restrain/subdue others; work efficiently for long periods of time.
Work Environment: Work is performed in a variety of field, office, and in-vehicle settings, including a secured jail facility, and may require exposure to dangerous and life-threatening situations. The employee must be willing to carry a firearm on the job; mentally and physically capable of taking the life of another, if justified; willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends, on-call, and holidays. Employees must be willing to work at any location in the County travel on specific assignments, comply with the agency's grooming standards, and wear a uniform.

Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent;
Baccalaureate degree in criminology, criminal justice, political science, public administration, or related field preferred.
• Must be a United States citizen.
• Must have a valid State of Georgia Driver's license.
• Must be certified as a Peace Officer under regulations of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Council.

Job Description
This is the first level in the Deputy Sheriff series. This class is a fully certified Peace Officer responsible for performing duties in assigned divisions of the Sheriff's Office: Court Operations, Field Operations, Support Operations, and Administrative Services. This position may require duties within the Jail Operations division as well, based on the needs of the agency and at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designee.
Applicants must pass acomprehensive background process(including criminal, controlled substance, credit, driving, employment history checks) and an oral interview in first phase. The second phase includes a drug screen, polygraph and psychological exam.
Essential Duties
* Performing general law enforcement duties to include: responding to calls, assisting with the apprehension of suspects or inmates, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring the proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, warrant service and serving civil processes and court orders
* Preparing proper paperwork for affidavits, reports, warrants, confirms validity, and serves documents as required

JOB SUMMARY:
Performs various duties in law enforcement including patrolling, investigating crimes, securing courtrooms during proceedings, maintaining security over offenders, and assuring all laws of the county and state are carried out in an efficient and effective manner. Deputy Sheriffs assist in emergency situations and must maintain physical ability to effect a forcible arrest or deal with physical, confrontational or combative situations. Deputy Sheriffs perform work in many situations that can be highly dangerous, stressful, and unpredictable. Deputy Sheriffs testify in court as necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Applicants for sworn positions will be required to pass a Physical Agility Test before being hired and annually thereafter.
The course consists of a series of nine interspersed individual tasks, arranged in a continuous format that may be viewed as being essential (physical) job tasks for law enforcement training:
Running, jumping (low hurdle), climbing stairs, Low crawling, Jumping (broad-type), Climbing a fence (chain-link/four feet), Climbing through a window, Moving/dragging a weight (150 lbs.), Changing direction on the run.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
When Assigned to Patrol Division:
Take appropriate law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Patrols assigned districts to assure all laws are enforced by checking homes and business for any signs of criminal activity such as broken windows and unlocked doors; arrests any suspects found in the commission of crimes; fills out arrest reports and transports the suspect to the Jail or to mental hospitals on court order.
Answers any calls from the public requesting assistance in burglaries, domestic violence, or any other situation needing the response from law enforcement authorities; writes incident reports on all calls answered indicating the nature of call and any findings at the scene; attends public meetings to maintain order; serves warrants and subpoenas upon court order.
Assists the solicitor and district attorney with case preparation by gathering evidence, assuring the chain of evidence is kept, and testifying in court as necessary.
Responds to motor vehicle accidents in designated areas or assists in other areas as needed; assists EMT's, firefighters, and other emergency personnel; performs first aid/CPR when necessary; completes wreck reports by asking questions of involved parties and any witnesses, gathering all pertinent information and calling wreckers as necessary; provides emotional support to victims at the scene; directs traffic as necessary to prevent further accidents and clean up accident scene; reopens the road when clear.
Maintains traffic safety by stopping unsafe motorists, drunk drivers and speeding vehicles by the use of radar and other detection devices; issues citations or arrests drivers and impounds vehicles as needed; reports any malfunctioning signals or damaged and missing signs.
Helps motorists with mechanical problems or calling wreckers when necessary; gives directions to motorists; removes debris from the roadways; escorts funeral processions, parades, and provides direction during sports events as necessary; directs traffic at school crossings.
Inspects all vehicles used for road safety by checking tire pressure and depth, oil, fuel, and reporting any unusual occurrences to the maintenance personnel and the next shift.

When Assigned to Traffic Unit/DUI Task Force:
Take appropriate law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Investigates major traffic accidents to determine if charges are to be filed and to investigate any mitigating circumstances; enforces all other traffic ordinances in the county; assists other patrol officers as necessary.
Uses radar and other speed detection devices to apprehend speeders and violators of traffic laws.
Investigates hit-and-run accidents; may be called in from off-duty time when necessary.

When Assigned to Court Services Division:
Take appropriate law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Provide security and order during all proceedings in State, Magistrate, Superior, or Juvenile Court; guards' prisoners and evidence during proceedings; may transport prisoners to and from court during proceedings.
Completes all paperwork necessary to have prisoners transported to and from other states; assures all prisoners arrive safely at their destination.
Maintain safety and security of the facility by operating the control room and control board. Monitor secure areas of the facility with video systems and cameras. Document inmate's entrance and exit to holding cells (sign in and out).

Conducts Sheriff's sales on confiscated and non-claimed items; composes legal advertise ments for publication in local newspapers; drafts bills of sale and distributes items to the purchaser; keeps records of all money and items distributed.

When assigned to the Jail Division:

Provides orientation to new inmates or detainees which include visitation, medical information, court dates, bond information, and other program and activities.
Resolves disputes between inmates, completes applicable forms and written documentation, and enforces facility rules and regulations.
Escorts inmates or detainees in or outside the facility for special programs, medical appointments, and court appearances.
Patrols assigned areas for evidence of forbidden activities, infraction of rules, and conducts inspections of security devices and equipment for functionality.
Screens and directs visitors.
Testifies in court as necessary.
May be called in from off-duty time when necessary.
Performs other related duties as required.
When assigned to the Warrant Unit:
Take appropriate law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Researches information received on wanted persons from family members, acquaintances, and employers;
Apprehends and arrests offenders; transports offenders to the jail.
Provides sworn testimony in court proceedings.
Provides assistance to other divisions and units as required.
Testifies in court as necessary.
May be called in from off-duty time when necessary.
Performs other related duties as directed.
When assigned to the ADVANCE Unit:
Take appropriate law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Instruct the 5th grade core-curriculum at elementary schools in a class-room environment facilitating core lessons on effects of drugs, building self-esteem, resistance strategies, internet safety, cyber-bullying, gangs, drug awareness, personal safety and violence prevention strategies.
Prepare, organize, and facilitate presentations for various youth related activities, including the annual ADVANCE Summer Camp, Water Safety Programs, and additional community outreach youth programs.
Attend Parent-Teacher Association meetings; present information; discuss issues at schools related to ADVANCE program and events.
Engage in proactive police activities with the public; provide guidance and information to the public on issues including safety and the ADVANCE community outreach programs.
Testifies in court as necessary.

Performs other related duties as required.
When assigned to the Lake Patrol Unit:
Take
appropriate
law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Lake Patrol officers will insure the safety of boat operators, enforce the Georgia Safe Boating Act and protect property along the waterways of Hall County. Lake Patrol Officers will enforce State laws, County ordinances, and strive to keep Hall County waterways safe. Officers assigned to Lake Patrol should have operational knowledge of boats, navigational knowledge of Lake Lanier as well as knowledge of boating and boater safety laws.
Conduct Boating Safety Classes.
Attends meetings pertaining to lake related activities, such as Event security, operations planning and emergency/incident water responses.
Works closely with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, U. S. Army Corp of Engineers U. S. Coast Guard (auxiliary), and other State and federal agencies.
Inspects and maintains boats and equipment assigned to the Lake Patrol Unit.
Daily changes in the Lake level and weather, as well as the seasonal variations in the level of boating activity will directly affect the difficulty of the work.
The work will typically involve the operation of a boat for long periods of time and may require great physical exertion when assisting boaters.
Officers assigned to Lake Patrol will be required to work the vast majority of weekends and holidays during the summer or other times of peak boating traffic on Lake Lanier.
During boat maintenance, lifting of heavy parts and/or equipment in excess of 50lbs may be required.
Compile monthly report.

When assigned to the K-9 Unit:
K-9 Officers paired with dogs must work them in a variety of scenarios, such as searching for explosives, chemicals and other illegal substances. They are also responsible for finding and rescuing individuals that are missing, along with tracking and apprehending fugitives.
Officers paired with dogs must train them extensively and work and work with them in a variety of scenarios. Handlers must make sure their dogs are obedient and follow commands both on and off of the leash, and that they are capable of performing a building search, as well as a search for lost and missing persons and felons. Handlers are also responsible for making sure their dogs are well taken care of. They must clean the kennel, along with ensuring the dog is taken for annual vet visits and any follow up visits.

Purpose of Job

Run 1-3/4 laps around the outside of the course, jump three small hurdles, climb and descend a flight of stairs (twice), low crawl under a 2 ½ foot bar, leap across a simulated 6-foot gap (representing a large ditch), negotiate a 4-foot-high chain link fence panel, climb through a standard size window (four feet high), drag a 150-pound dummy for 20 feet, then run one more lap around the outside of the course.

Salary & Incentives:
$55,923with possible incentives up to:
* $57,600(3% educational incentive) for an associate degree
* $59,278(6% educational incentive) for a bachelor's degree
* Hiring incentive up to 10% of the base salary for new hires
* 5% night shift differential
The grade for this position is PL213.
Minimum Qualifications:
* High School Diploma, or G.E.D.;
* Must be a U.S. Citizen to be eligible for Georgia P.O.S.T. certification;
* Valid Driver's License from state of residency;
* Must be 21 years of age, 20 years old at time of application;
* Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation including criminal, controlled substance, driving, work history, and physical agility testing.

About the Police Department
The Gwinnett County Police Department is a nationally accredited and rapidly growing police agency located in the northeastern quadrant of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The department has an authorized strength of 931 sworn officers and 145 communications officers supported by 201 civilian employees with the responsibility of providing law enforcement services to approximately 1,000,000 residents within an area of 437 square miles.
Applicants must pass a series of tests and interviews prior to selection as employees. Once selected, individuals must complete academy requirements, and if successful, continue to field training assisted by veteran officers (PO Master or Corporals). This job requires a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
