1832

In 1832, Sauk chief Keokuk and General Winfield Scott signed a treaty to end the Black Hawk War in Davenport.

1848

John Deere, inventor of an improved steel plow, established a workshop there in 1848, and Moline was soon a centre of plow production.

1856

Steamboaters saw these nationwide railroads as a threat to their business, and on May 6, 1856, just weeks after it was completed, an angry steamboater crashed the Effie Afton steamboat into the bridge.

The first railroad bridge built across the Mississippi River connected Davenport and Rock Island in 1856.

1868

His business was incorporated as Deere & Company in 1868, and today, Deere & Company is the largest employer in the Quad Cities.

1872

On September 6th, 1872, the City of Moline passed an ordinance allowing for the establishment of a police force.

1876

At the western end of the district, acting as a visual counterpoise to the 15-story hotel, is the tall steeple of the First Lutheran Church, which was built in 1876.

1883

The City of Moline has taken its water supply from the Mississippi River since 1883, when Moline contracted the Davis Brothers to construct and operate a 2 million gallon per day (MGD) capacity pumping station.

1890

1890 - Bailey Davenport, son of Col.

1895

1895 - Edward Guyer of Rock Island and George Walker and Charles Pope of Moline formed a land syndicate, the East Moline Company, later renamed the East Moline Land Company.

1898

1898 - The Western Illinois Hospital for the Insane in Watertown accepted its first patients.

1900

1900 - Deere & Company established its first large factory in East Moline when the Union Malleable Iron Company began operations with several hundred employees.

By 1900, the police force consisted of 9 men who worked 7 days a week (with no vacation time) in the City, whose population had grown to more than 16,000 residents.

1901

In 1901 the Root and VanDervoort Engineering Company began the manufacture of gas engines in East Moline.

1903

1903 - East Moline was incorporated as a village in February with Walter H. Ammerman elected as the 1st village president.

1905

Despite plans for waterpower and industry, Watertown grew slowly, incorporating as a village in 1905.

1907

1907 - The village of East Moline was incorporated as a city in April with Doctor G. F. Johnson as its first mayor.

1933

The adaptive reuse of Moline’s 1933 water treatment plant has been recognized with an ACEC Merit Award, an IEC Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award and a Historic Preservation Award.

Anderson’s skillful direction, until the City constructed a new 4 MGD filtration plant at Sylvan Park in 1933.

1946

Moline is the seat of Black Hawk (community) College (1946); there is also a campus of Western Illinois University.

1970

In March of 1970, the Policeman-Pals program was started.

1987

In July, 1987, the Moline Police Department established a tactical response team.

1990

The early 1990's saw the Moline Police introduce its bicycle patrol and its first school liaison officer at Moline High School.

Since the 1990’s the Quad Cities government, businesses, non-profits and residents have worked hard to redevelop the region and have achieved national attention for their accomplishments.

1997

The John Deere Pavilion (1997) includes exhibits on agriculture and displays of modern and vintage farm equipment.

2005

Most recently, the City completed a $25 million plant improvements project in 2005.

2007

In 2007, Davenport and Rock Island petitioned for and won the title of “most livable small city” from the National Council of Mayors, based upon an unfunded proposal called RiverVision.

2008

In 2008 Bettendorf, Iowa was listed by CNN.com as one of the ten best places to buy a house in the United States.
