Promotional - Examination
Duties: Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level civil engineering work in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of water reclamation plants and sewers. May supervise sub-professional personnel.
Promotional Requirements: The following promotional requirements must be completed by the anticipation date. Possession of a bachelor's degree in chemical, civil, environmental, sanitary or structural engineering. One year of service with the District as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV. Civil service status as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV; or civil service status as an Engineer Trainee.
An applicant who can demonstrate the likelihood of receiving the required degree by the anticipation date may be admitted to the examination process. Candidates so admitted, who are successful in the examination process, may not be appointed until evidence is provided that the requirements were fulfilled by the anticipation date. A four-year accredited college or university is interpreted to mean accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Effective October 31, 2006, foreign-educated applicants must produce a satisfactory assessment of their academic qualifications by the Center for Professional Engineering Education Services (CPEES), a unit of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) or present an undergraduate degree from a school that is recognized by the Washington Accord. Prior to October 31, 2006, assessment by the Engineering Credentials Evaluation International (ECEI) was deemed qualifying. The NCEES assessment and any additional coursework used to correct deficiencies must be completed by the anticipation date. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois or another state will be accepted in lieu of an assessment for foreign-educated applicants.
Examination: The examination will consist of a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted 90%, an efficiency rating weighted 5% and a seniority rating weighted 5%. The minimum passing score on the training and experience evaluation will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to have their names placed on the eligible list.
Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, March 27, 2026, should contact the Employee Selection Office at **************.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION: Each candidate whose application is approved, will have their T&E responses (supplemental questionnaire portion of the application) rated. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, detail-oriented, and interested in developing practical engineering skills within a manufacturing environment.
Job Duties:
* Develop knowledge of precast concrete manufacturing, quality control, and delivery activities.
* Attend meetings with operational teams to understand the interrelationships between departments.
* Partner with Sales and Estimating to learn project stages, bidding, and client interactions.
* Assist in creation of shop drawings and piece ticketing.
* Complete precast calculations for products such as wall panels, beams, planks, and columns under mentorship.
* Learn standard practices for connection and reinforcing design in precast structures.
* Prepare an end-of-semester presentation for divisional leadership summarizing learnings and project contributions.
Work Environment:
* Office and plant-based work; plant areas may be noisy, hearing protection may be required.
* Exposure to manufacturing processes, production, and delivery operations.
Physical Requirements:
* Frequent sitting, walking, talking, and listening.
* Occasional standing.
* Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Experience & Qualifications:
* Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Civil Engineering.
* Previous internship experience is a plus.
* Engineering in Training (EIT) certification is a plus.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
* Exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, RISA, or SAP2000 is a plus.
* Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
