Here's how co-operations engineers use project management:
  • Assisted in project management duties such as supervising business relationships, planning, implementing presentations, and constructed business correspondence.
  • Performed project management tasks by assessing the viability of ambiguous projects through financial analyses and communicating my results.

10. Java

Java is a widely-known programming language that was invented in 1995 and is owned by Oracle. It is a server-side language that was created to let app developers "write once, run anywhere". It is easy and simple to learn and use and is powerful, fast, and secure. This object-oriented programming language lets the code be reused that automatically lowers the development cost. Java is specially used for android apps, web and application servers, games, database connections, etc. This programming language is closely related to C++ making it easier for the users to switch between the two.

Here's how co-operations engineers use java:
  • Developed part of a JIT Java compiler at Intel's Microcomputer Research Lab.
  • Transported the entire framework from Java to C.

11. Data Collection

Data collection means to analyze and collect all the necessary information. It helps in carrying out research and in storing important and necessary information. The most important goal of data collection is to gather the information that is rich and accurate for statistical analysis.

Here's how co-operations engineers use data collection:
  • Worked with top executive quality assurance engineers performing tasks related to data collection and analysis.
  • Coordinated the monitoring and maintaining of critical equipment through data collection techniques and documentation.

12. Technical Support

Technical support or tech support are the services provided by any hardware or software company to users. They help in solving the technical difficulties the customers face with their products or services. Moreover, the tech support employees maintain, manage, and repair the IT faults. They are also responsible for resolving the network problems, installing and configuring hardware and software.

Here's how co-operations engineers use technical support:
  • Provided technical support to composite part fabrication and assembly.
  • Provided customer technical support for Allen Bradley PLC s, Sensors, Industrial Control products, and Rockwell Software Ladder Logic programs

What skills stand out on co-operations engineer resumes?

Vianney Gimenez-Pinto Ph.DVianney Gimenez-Pinto Ph.D LinkedIn profile

Assistant Professor of Physics and Chemistry, Lincoln University of Missouri

Physicists are valued for their abstraction, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. However, I would not recommend spelling those out in a resume as they are embedded already in the major. A robust undergraduate resume should have research experiences, either based in their home-university or as an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program in another institution. Also, it should include conference presentations and internships. Those show the candidate's ability to apply the before-mentioned skills successfully.

If we must point out skills: Coding, common languages include (but are not limited to) Java, C/C++ and Python; Mathematical Modeling; and Experimental Design.

What soft skills should all co-operations engineers possess?

David Nielsen Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Arizona State University

Communication, teamwork, decision-making.

What hard/technical skills are most important for co-operations engineers?

David Nielsen Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Arizona State University

Strong fundamental understandings of mass and energy balances, as well as thermodynamics; data analysis.

What co-operations engineer skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?

Peter RosadoPeter Rosado LinkedIn profile

Associate Professor of Chemistry, Georgia College and State University

I tell students to call their "gap" year more of a "Developmental" year. If a graduate desires to have such a year, they should focus on their whole as a goal, which means not only developing their professionalism but have other experiences. For example, travel to another country, learn a new language, intern at a company outside of the US, get involved further in the field of study. What stands out in candidates is how they made use of their time, skills that they acquired, and how they could weave them into the position they are applying for. That the candidate has had experiences outside of their comfort zone tells me, as an employer, that they are flexible and can adapt to situations that are new and unpredictable.

What type of skills will young co-operations engineers need?

Steve Opoku-Duah Ph.D.Steve Opoku-Duah Ph.D. LinkedIn profile

Associate Professor of Chemistry & Chair, Lipscomb University

Chemistry is a highly analytical and problem-solving discipline with strong connections with everyday human social problems, industry, and the environment. I expect chemistry graduates to develop robust analytical and critical thinking skills, competence in problem-solving, and adaptability at their workplaces.
