Key Responsibilities
* Provide expertise and guidance to the engineering team during the early project stages to develop functional specifications and set design direction.
* Design and develop code for automation equipment (PLCs, HMIs, Industrial Robots, Vision Systems) aligning with functional requirements and Convergix's internal programming standards.
* Responsible for project performance, by acting as the Controls Project Lead, with respect to achieving/defining functional targets, meeting/beating project budgets, ensuring on-time delivery of scope, and delivering an extraordinary customer experience.
* Responsible for driving the best controls solution to meet the functional requirements of the projects by applying best practices and standards while working with the cross-functional team.
* Drive high engineering excellence into projects through the application of critical thinking, judgement, and strong risk management strategies.
* Drive controls specific project meetings (offline programming reviews, design reviews, Stage-Gates, etc), as led by the Controls Project Lead, to articulate risks, challenges, and approaches to gain confidence from internal teams and the customer.
* Support project status updates, forecasting, and issues/risks to the Project Manager or Controls Team Leads proactively, while proposing developing plans to ensure successful projects.
* Support coaching and mentoring of project team members success through active oversight of Offline programming, Commissioning, Product testing, deliverables, and cross-functional support.
* Assist the mechanical and electrical design teams in the selection, testing, and integration of hardware such as robots, motion controllers, sensors, and vision systems
* Debug and commission control systems during integration at Convergix's facility and customer sites.
* Conduct comprehensive testing of machine functionality to ensure the integrity and compliance of the system with customer specifications.
* Travel to customer and supplier sites for installation, commissioning, and training purposes.
* Collaborate with the systems design department and other teams to continuously enhance controls technology integration for improved safety, functionality, and cost-efficiency.
* Ensure adherence to labor and material budgets and scheduled delivery dates.
* Work collaboratively with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to provide comprehensive and functional automation systems.
* Prepare accurate documentation for each project including operator, maintenance, and training manuals for each project.
* Provide technical problem-solving support and training to customers.
Note: The nature of the role may require working over weekends or outside standard business hours. Trips to customer sites in North America several times per year, with travel expectations of up to 20% of your time, typically lasting 1-2 weeks.
Qualifications and Experience

* 5+ years of proven controls programming and commissioning experience within industrial automation
* Proven leadership experience, leading large projects and teams within industrial automation projects
* Eagerness to troubleshoot equipment, assist with assembly/build, and check wiring.
* Experience with industrial robotics, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and vision systems.
* A strong drive for continuous learning and growth in the field of industrial automation.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team and interacting with diverse customers.

Summary: As a Traveling Controls Technician, you'll spearhead panel-upgrade projects that modernize and expand industrial control systems across our North American customer base. Your primary mission is to re-terminate and add I/O in tight control boxes, integrate safety switches, and commission variable-frequency drives (VFDs) - all within carefully planned maintenance windows that minimize downtime. Flights, mileage, lodging, and daily per-diem are covered, and every assignment is scheduled in advance so you can focus on high-impact technical work, not last-minute call-outs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Pull, land, and label discrete and analog I/O wiring (24 VDC, 120 VAC, 4-20 mA, Ethernet) in compact enclosures while adhering to industrial wiring practices and UL 508A/NEC requirements.
Install and verify safety switches, safety relays, and e-stops; perform functional checks with on-site operations staff before restart.
Terminate, program-assist, and test VFDs up to 50 HP; confirm proper motor rotation, parameter sets, and interlock signals.
Coordinate with plant maintenance or controlsengineers to isolate equipment, complete work, and restore operation inside designated shutdown windows (typically 1-2 hours).
Inspect existing panel layout; identify clearance, heat-dissipation, or wiring issues and propose corrective actions.
Travel to manufacturing plants, distribution centers, and process facilities per a rolling project calendar.
Maintain a neat, hazard-free workspace; comply with NFPA 70E arc-flash and company LOTO procedures at all times.
Capture as-built redlines, terminal torque readings, photos, and commissioning checklists on a company-issued tablet; submit digital reports daily.
