JOB SUMMARY
The Custodian position, under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties and general care of school building(s) and surrounding grounds to ensure a safe and clean school building and environment for students, staff, parents and patrons.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following tasks. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned at any time.
* Responsible for cleaning areas as assigned (i.e., rooms, halls, offices, rest rooms, cafeteria, etc.), vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, mops all types of floor surfaces, washes windows, white boards, walls, doors and baseboards; cleans and polishes furniture, windows, metal work and computer screens; washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms as well as cleans sinks, fixtures, panels and drinking fountains daily. Picks up paper and other debris, empties and cleans trash and recycling receptacles and moves trash and recycling to outside dumpsters.
* Ensures proper operation of HVAC and lighting systems. Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting, changes light bulbs as necessary and adjusts clocks.
* Performs light maintenance and repairs, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc. Completes deep cleaning projects during summer months and other times school is not in session.
* Maintains building security, including appropriately opening and closing the building and ensuring lock up procedures are followed.
* Stocks supplies and equipment following district and department procedures; checks and stocks bathroom supplies daily.
* Maintains safe environment for students, public, and staff; reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
* Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in safe and appropriate manner.
* Sets-up, takes down and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving and partitions for meetings, athletic events and other district needs as assigned.
* Coordinates and ensures compliance with all pertinent federal, state, local and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) rules, regulations and requirements, including labeling and use of hazardous chemicals, asbestos identification and removal, and MSDS compliance.
* Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
* Assists as necessary or required in an emergency, including fires, earthquakes, lock-out/lock-down, etc.
* Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
* Consistent, daily and punctual attendance.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Non-essential duties of this position include the following tasks. Employees in this position perform some or all of these tasks. Other duties may be assigned at any time.
* Operates and troubleshoots various office equipment including telephones and photocopy machines.
* Attends in-service trainings, staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
* Prepares for and cleans up after special activities and events.
* Maintains necessary or required employee, equipment, and facility paper and electronic records.
* Reports issues to the supervisor and the appropriate authorities including vandalism, thefts and errant wildlife.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
* Consistently follows all applicable federal and state laws and all district policies, rules and supervisor directions.
* Observes ergonomics of sedentary office work including placement of computers and monitors, and sitting alignment.
* Observes proper lifting techniques and other strategies to avoid accidents and personal injury while performing job duties.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. * Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED is required. Thorough working knowledge of custodial work, including cleaning methods and materials, hazardous chemical use, labeling and storage, and proper use of custodial equipment and tools. Ability to do minor equipment and building repairs and working knowledge of boilers, heating and ventilating systems and controls related to those systems is required. HVAC training or experience preferred. Three (3) years of previous experience working in sanitation, custodial or maintenance positions is preferred.

* Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, proportions and area, including circumference and volume. Ability to read and interpret various charts, bar graphs and similar visual data depictions.
* Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving more than one variable.
* Computer Skills: Ability to effectively use office computers and internet access for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, visual presentations and general web-based applications.

POSITION PURPOSE:
Contributes to the appearance and operations of the school or other district facilities by cleaning and maintaining assigned buildings, and performing maintenance and operations duties. MESD custodians are an integral part of maintaining safe, clean, and healthy environments for our students and staff. Shift hours are 3:00pm - 11:30pm during the school year (approximately August 15 - June 15). Building assignments are located throughout Multnomah County and are subject to change.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Positions assigned to the Custodian I classification are distinguished from the Custodian II classification by job duties which may include cleaning floors, restrooms, or windows; replacing lights and doing light maintenance; moving supplies and setting up chairs; and operating building security, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Cleans lavatories, including toilets and sinks, washes mirrors, walls and dispensers to ensure proper sanitary conditions and good appearance. Checks and fills towel, soap, and sanitary napkin dispensers.
Empties and cleans wastebaskets and disposes of waste.
Sweeps, vacuums, mops, buffs and waxes tile floors, carpets and walkways.
Washes windows and glass throughout the facility to assure good appearance and visibility.
Cleans assigned classroom desks, sinks and countertops according to established procedures.
Washes, vacuums, and dusts furniture, drinking fountains, window sills, fixtures, baseboards, chalkboards and the like.
Operates, monitors and reports irregularities in the operation of security, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Secures building according to building policy at close of shift.
Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as needed.
Assists with room setups and moves furniture, equipment, etc. as needed.
Provides assistance to other custodians and school staff, as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed primarily within an office building or school building. The work involves physical ability in cleaning and occasional lifting of objects in excess of 60 lbs. Employees are exposed to cleaning chemicals and light machines such as vacuum cleaners.
BENEFITS:
Shift Differentials: In addition to the established wage rates, the District shall pay an hourly premium of a minimum of sixty cents (.60¢) to Members for all hours worked on shifts whose hours are mainly between 4:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. Members working any hours on shifts whose hours are mainly between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. shall be paid an hourly premium of a minimum of seventy cents (70¢) for each hour worked. However, the hourly premium rate shall be identical for all Members with the same job description who work the same shift.

In coordination with all facility staff, provide custodial and laundry services, including basic maintenance support, to ensure a clean and safe environment.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
CUSTODIAL DUTIES:
Assure the facility is maintained in a clean, sanitary and safe condition.
On a daily basis, clean and inspect offices, bathrooms, floors, stairways, and common areas. Empty trash containers.
On a regular basis, or as requested:
Clean air vents at least monthly.
Wash, dry, and fold house laundry, including bedding; launder bedding for up to 200 beds weekly at full capacity and perform daily laundry as needed.
Wax and buff floors at least once a month.
Clean/replace shelter lights as needed.
Wash windows as needed.
Unclog toilets, sinks, and replace user-accessible parts.
Clean outside of building and adjacent sidewalks.
Perform basic repair and maintenance services.
Work independently during non-operational hours while coordinating with program management and site staff to ensure custodial needs are met, including support with special projects as needed.
SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE:
Participate in the Agency Safety Committee as one of the site Safety Captains.
Assist program and safety leadership in completing required safety tasks.
Responsible for labeling and storing of cleaning chemicals properly in accordance with the applicable Safety Data Sheet.
SUPPLIES, INVENTORY, AND MAINTENANCE PLANNING:
Submit necessary work orders to maintain facility in the optimum manner.
Maintain storage areas in clean, safe and orderly manner.
Develop and follow a monthly maintenance schedule. Evaluate building needs semi-annually.
PROGRAM AND FACILITY SUPPORT (AS NEEDED):
As needed, prepare spaces for incoming clients/residents, assist with food box preparation, etc.
As necessary and appropriate, document events in Wellsky or other database system(s).
Working with volunteers, assist with donation processing.
Other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Each Transition Projects employee must:
Acquire First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire and be retested biannually thereafter throughout employment.
Complete Bloodborne Pathogens and Narcan Training within 30 days of hire and be retested annually thereafter throughout employment.
Demonstrate reliability by being present for work as scheduled, arriving and leaving on time and taking breaks in expected time frames.
