    Reports to Jail Lieutenant & Administrative Captain The Fleet Mechanic / Inmate Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the Sheriff's Office fleet, including patrol vehicles, administrative vehicles, and other department-owned equipment. This position requires the ability to supervise and oversee inmate workers who assist in basic maintenance and other assigned tasks. The role also requires the individual to obtain and maintain a Corrections License as regulated by the Texas Administrative Code 217. Principle Duties • Diagnose, maintain, and repair fleet vehicles and equipment, including brakes, engines, electrical systems, and transmissions. • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance. • Maintain service records, repair logs, and parts inventory for all fleet vehicles. • Coordinate with vendors for parts, supplies, and specialized repairs beyond in-house capabilities. • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify vehicle issues. • Adhere to workplace safety standards and state/local regulations. • Assist with emergency response support as required by the Sheriff's Office. • Supervise inmate workers in fleet maintenance tasks, ensuring safety and security. • Oversee daily inmate activities, ensuring custody, control, and supervision. • Monitor contraband, unusual behavior, and escape attempts. • Supervise the feeding of inmates and inmate worker assignments. • Ensure adherence to all security protocols and procedures. • Perform other related duties as assigned. Replaces part as needed. * Replaces defective engines or subassemblies, such as transmissions. * Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment. * Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists. * Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery. * Test drive trucks, buses and overhauled equipment to diagnose malfunctions and ensure operating efficiency. * Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices. * Welds broken parts and structural members. * Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions. * Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges. * Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors. * Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties as required. * Repairs and maintains diesel engines used to power machines, such as construction machinery, generators, busses, dump trucks, off road dump trucks, and cranes, using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, computer diagnostics, and machine tools. * Diagnoses trouble, disassembles engines, and examines parts for defects and excessive wear. * Reconditions and replaces parts, such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves and bushings, using hand tools, boreing machines, and precision measuring instruments. * May weld and cut parts, using arc welding and flame cutting equipment. * Responsible for observing and complying with all company safety regulations and industry standards. Performs other duties as required.
