1980

In 1980, the United States military partnered with governmental organizations and the Undersea Medical Society to found the National Diving Accident Network (NaDAN) at Duke University Medical Center.

1981

In 1981, DAN published its "Underwater Diving Accident Manual". The Hyperbaric Center received 305 calls for information and assistance.

1982

DAN implemented a medical/safety advisory telephone line to handle questions from recreational divers with non-emergency questions in 1982.

1983

In 1983 International Diving Assistance (IDA), later to become DAN Europe, was founded by dr.

1985

In 1985 DAN started a 'sponsor program' for clubs, stores and corporations,

1987

Also in 1987, DAN started the first dive accident insurance program for members.

1990

The IRS granted DAN its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 1990.

1991

In 1991 DAN introduced its first training course 'Oxygen First aid Training Program' and DAN Travel Assist.

1992

In 1992 Emergency medical evacuation, was added as a member benefit, and DAN was awarded the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society's Craig Hoffman Diving Safety Award in June of that year for its significant contributions to the health and safety of recreational divers.

1993

1993 saw DAN open an insurance company 'Accident General Insurance'.

1994

Dan Asia Pacific was founded in 1994 under the name DAN Australia by Australian diver, John Lippmann OAM, after dual approaches from DAN America and Dr John Williamson of the Australian Diver Emergency Service (DES) to "establish a DAN entity in the Asia-Pacific."

1996

DAN Southern Africa joined the IDAN in 1996 with Frans Cronjé, M.D. as CEO By 1996 Oxygen First Aid Training was being taught in seven continents.

1999

Since the program first launched in 1999, DAN has invested more than US$1 million and hosted more than 100 interns.

2000

DAN expanded this initiative in 2000 with the establishment of the oxygen grant program to helps increase the prevalence of emergency oxygen in the field by subsidizing equipment for public safety organizations as well as dive professionals.

2002

Doctor Bennett received the 2002 Diving Equipment and Marketing Association Reaching Out Award for his contribution to the dive industry and the Carolinas' Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 award for contributions to business in the life sciences.

2009

Orr was named as the DAN President and CEO. In February 2009, DAN launched a web site for their bi-monthly magazine "Alert Diver Online".

2019

DAN reported membership numbers worldwide for 2019 as: DAN US/Canada, 274,708; DAN Europe, 123,680; DAN Japan, 18,137; DAN World Asia Pacific, 12,163; DAN World Latin America/Brazil, 8,008; DAN Southern Africa, 5,894.
