Manager Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineer job in South Portland, ME
We are Generac, a leading energy technology company committed to powering a smarter world.
Over the 60 plus years of Generac's history, we've been dedicated to energy innovation. From creating the home standby generator market category, to our current evolution into an energy technology solutions company, we continue to push new boundaries.
We're growing our engineering team and looking for a Manager of Electrical Engineering to lead new product development of power electronics for energy storage and control systems.
This role is focused on designing and delivering power electronics hardware that integrates tightly with firmware, power subsystems, and mechanical assemblies. You'll guide a team of electrical engineers through full product lifecycles - from concept and prototyping to design validation and transfer to manufacturing.
The right candidate is execution-driven and capable of scaling a high-performing development team. They are excited and passionate about being in the lab, solving problems alongside the team.
Ideally this role would be based in the S. Portland ME office, however for the qualified candidate the team could consider N. Billerica office location (salary range will reflect geographical differences).
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the Power Electronics EE team responsible for Power Electronics hardware design, development, and validation for CES energy products
Deliver full product lifecycle execution: schematic design, layout guidance, bring-up, lab validation, and design for test/manufacture
Architect and review designs for analog signal conditioning, digital interfaces, MCUs, sensors, and communication buses (e.g., CAN, UART, RS485)
Partner closely with firmware, mechanical, test, and manufacturing teams to deliver highly integrated, production-ready designs
Drive product builds across EVT/DVT/PVT, managing technical risk and coordinating with contract manufacturers and test partners
Provide technical mentorship, design reviews, and team development leadership
Support sustaining improvements and field issue resolution as part of ongoing product maturity
Minimum Qualifications:
BSEE or MSEE with 7+ years of experience in power electronics hardware development
Strong background in power electronics design, embedded systems, and board-level hardware architecture
Hands-on lab experience with board bring-up, validation, debugging, and test automation tools
Familiar with design constraints related to thermal, EMC, safety, and manufacturability
Track record of cross-functional execution in new product development settings
Prior experience with design documentation, ECO control, and sustaining engineering
Experience with high quality, high reliability products. Long warranty, high stress environments.
Experience in PCB engineering including fabrication and assembly technologies, strain/stress analysis, thermal management, and connector/cable engineering
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with energy systems, IoT devices, or embedded hardware in regulated environments
Exposure to compliance testing (UL/IEC/EMC) and design transfer to contract manufacturing
Experience with production at scale, 1M+ units shipped
Knowledge of low-power design, sensor integration, or signal integrity optimization
Leadership experience building or scaling hardware development teams
Embedded Firmware experience
Understanding of mechanical engineering physics such as boundary/force diagrams, stress/strain, 1D thermodynamics, and basic manufacturing techniques (CNC, molding, laser cutting, and 3D printing)
Why Join Us
This is a new product development role, not a maintenance job. You'll shape CES's next wave of power electronics platforms, mentor a growing team, and ensure we deliver robust, high-integrity systems that perform in the field. South Portland is a critical execution hub for CES - and you'll be at the center of making it run.
