Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University company history timeline

1925

On December 17, 1925 Talton Higbee Embry and John Paul Riddle founded the Embry–Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1926

In spring 1926, the company opened the Embry–Riddle School of Aviation.

1929

In 1929, Embry-Riddle was one of the first five flying schools in the country to be certified under the Department of Commerce’s newly-minted Air Commerce Act.

1930

Following a merge with the Aviation Corporation (AVCO), the Embry–Riddle flying school was closed in 1930.

1932

After less than a year in St Louis with the fledgling airline, Riddle left the company in 1932 and moved to Florida – a location and climate he thought offered tremendous potential for aviation.

1939

In 1939 Riddle, John Graham McKay and wife Isabel re-established the school in Miami, Florida.

1944

In 1944, Riddle set his sights on the burgeoning aviation industry in Brazil.

1946

A year later, Embry left the company and retired to California, where he lived until his death in 1946.

1951

In 1951, McKay died unexpectedly and his widow assumed the presidency.

1963

A major turning point for the institute came in 1963 when a former Navy Commander, with a notable aviation record of his own, was named President.

1965

Over a weekend in April 1965, everything the institute owned was either trucked or flown to Daytona Beach in “Operation Bootstrap.” Community volunteers manned 31 borrowed trucks to make a ragtag convoy.

1970

The first remote location was established in 1970 at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

1978

Embry–Riddle started its worldwide program the same year and opened a second residential campus in Prescott, Arizona, in 1978.

1988

Embry-Riddle began intercollegiate athletics competition on its Daytona Beach Campus in 1988 and has since transformed into a highly successful program that sponsors 17 intercollegiate sports teams, as well as coed cheerleading.

2011

Built in 2011, the 3,465-square-foot fitness center is home to a weight room and a new cardio room with flat-screen TVs, iPod/MP3-ready workout machines, an aerobics room and classes.

2012

Embry-Riddle’s acceptance rate for the fall of 2012 was 71.6 percent.

2014

In May 2014, the United States News & World Report ranked Embry-Riddle Worldwide one of the nation’s top online educators for veterans.

2015

The renovation, set to be completed by June 2015, is a $4.2M project that includes new basketball court and bleachers, new trainer’s facilities, offices and more.

The Prescott Campus competes in nine sports: Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Women’s Fast-Pitch Softball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Wrestling and Basketball (Starting in 2015!).
