When you’re recruiting for your up-and-coming business, you’ll likely be looking for a decent mix of education, experience, and raw talent in each person you interview. In particular, looking for somebody who can handle a management role means entrusting your company to somebody who you hardly know. So how can you predict if they will be a success?

Of course, there are no guarantees, and everybody has their unique balance of strengths and weaknesses – which can often surprise you. But it is interesting to note, via this new interactive resource about the highest-paid CEOs in each US state, that the top-hitters all tend to graduate with at least one degree, and two-thirds of them with a post-grad qualification too. Diplomas matter!

Business itself is a strong option. Naturally, you want somebody who knows what they’re doing! But engineering is a strong second-runner in terms of the degree choice of America’s CEOs. Somebody who knows how it all works on a hands-on basis is going to have decent instincts when it comes to making important decisions. On the other hand, somebody with an arts and humanities degree is more likely to have those soft skills a manager needs, particularly empathy and a creative imagination.

Check out the infographic below by our friends at resume.io to see which companies favoured which type of graduate, and you’ll find it easier to decide who to take. That is, if you don’t mind your new protégé overtaking you to become a top-earning CEO!
