What You Will Be Doing
The materials engineering team at Helion is responsible for developing novel metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites necessary to successfully operate current and next generation nuclear fusion systems. What you will be doing:
The intern will primarily work with the Protein Engineering group to help develop novel therapeutic proteins that modulate immune responses. The intern will apply molecular biology techniques to build and screen protein libraries for directed evolution yeast display campaigns. This position will enable the design of expression plasmids for potential therapeutic proteins, and the student will also become familiar with in silico protein modeling/design tools (e.g., AlphaFold, Rosetta).
Technical skills that will be acquired include:
* Basic molecular biology techniques, including PCR, primer design, Gibson assembly, bacterial transformation, yeast transformation, and DNA sequencing analysis.
* Protein expression plasmid design and production.

The student will interact closely with several members of our teams, such as specialists in stem cell differentiation, screening, genetic integrity, and epigenetics.

What You Will Be Doing:
The Radiation Safety and Nuclear Science (RaSNS) team is home to the radiation safety, nuclear, fuel cycle (chemical), and materials teams. You will work as part of the nuclear group focused on nuclear diagnostics for measuring and characterizing our fusion yield. This work will improve our fusion product diagnostics for measuring yield and ion temperature. This is a 12-week onsite internship at our Everett, WA office.

Design and develop fusion diagnostic detectors (gamma, neutron, charged particles) to measure DD, D3He, and DT fusion products
Working with the diagnostics team to test, enhance, quantify and calibrate our current diagnostics detectors
New concept design and realization through prototyping and/or modeling

Reporting directly to the Production Manager, this role will be on site at our Ply Gem Windows plant in Auburn, WA.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Must be currently enrolled in and pursuing a degree in Electrical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering at an accredited school.
Experience with with AutoCad, Inventor, or Solid works will be an advantage
Experience in data interpretation/manipulation via MS Excel preferred
Experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred but not required, although a demonstrable interest in industrial processes will be evaluated during the interview process. Students with any level of experience are encouraged to apply.
