Within BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) Research & Development, the Staff Scientist, Microbiology will be part of the Materials Science team in Franklin Lakes NJ, reporting to the Associate Director, Materials Science. Our R&D Engineers and Scientists are responsible for developing and implementing new product materials and designs, product improvements, and critical component changes for disposable and durable medical devices. The preferred candidate will have strong technical skills, excellent written and oral skills, and leadership abilities. This candidate should possess a strong capability to interpret and ensure compliance with all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, quality policies, best practices, and procedures through appropriate communication. The Staff Scientist, Microbiology plays a critical role in ensuring the microbiological integrity of products and processes throughout the development lifecycle. This position provides technical leadership in microbiology-related risk assessments, method development, and validation activities, supporting compliance with global regulatory requirements and internal quality standards. The role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams, including Platform Product R&D, Regulatory Affairs, and Manufacturing, to deliver safe, effective, and innovative medical devices. **Key Responsibilities:** + **Microbiological Risk Management:** + Lead microbiological risk assessments for new product development and sustaining projects. + Define and implement contamination control strategies aligned with ISO 11737, ISO 11135, and related standards. + Develop solutions to both unique and routine technical problems related to the assigned projects. + **Method Development & Validation:** + Provide technical leadership for key aspects of development projects requiring the design and performing of microbiology experiments in the laboratory that includes culture of pathogenic bacteria and fungi, and handling of blood and blood products. + Develop and validate microbiological test methods (bioburden, sterility, endotoxin, environmental monitoring). + Ensure robustness and compliance of methods with USP, EP, and ISO requirements. + **Sterilization & Cleanliness Support:** + Partner with sterilization engineers to establish and maintain validated sterilization processes. + Support packaging integrity and EO residual testing strategies. + **Regulatory & Quality Compliance:** + Author and review microbiology-related sections of regulatory submissions (510(k), CE marking, etc.). + Ensure adherence to GMP, ISO 13485, and FDA QSR requirements. + **Cross-Functional Collaboration:** + Provides experimental data and technical input to other scientists within R&D and provides support to other functional groups in pursuit of project objectives. + Serve as the microbiology SME in design reviews, hazard analyses, and CAPA investigations. + Provide guidance to project teams on microbiological considerations impacting design and manufacturing. + **Continuous Improvement:** + Identify opportunities to optimize microbiological testing efficiency and reliability. + Mentor junior associates and contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives. + **Leadership** + Lead cross-functional technical governance for microbiology-related risk management and compliance, ensuring alignment with corporate and regulatory expectations. + Mentor and coach senior scientists and engineers, building organizational capability in microbiology evaluations. + Provide technical leadership for critical business decisions, including supplier qualification, material selection, and new technology adoption. + Engage with regulatory agencies and notified bodies as BD's microbiology subject matter expert during audits and inspections + Serve as global microbiology thought leader, representing BD in external technical forums, standards committees, and industry working groups. **Qualifications:** + Minimum bachelor's degree in microbiology or related field required, advanced degree preferred + Minimum 5 years of experience in microbiology within medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or related regulated industry. + Proven expertise in sterilization validation, bioburden control, and microbiological method development. + Research experience in microbiology, biochemistry or a related field that includes culturing and manipulation of microorganisms. + Experience in laboratory techniques in microbiology with demonstrated skills in adapting procedures to meet specific objectives and solve problems. + Strong knowledge of ISO 11737, ISO 11135, USP , , and related standards. + Understand and follow biosafety practices and use aseptic technique when working in microbiology labs. + Comprehensive knowledge of the medical device product development process under a quality management system in a regulated environment (ISO 13485, FDA cGMP/cGLP, etc) + Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills. + Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. + Effective communicator and collaborator across functions and levels. Report writing would include wetland and watercourse delineation reports, biological assessments, monitoring reports, mitigation plans and related documents. * Assist in the development of Clean Water Act 404/401 applications, NEPA environmental assessments or impact statements, natural resources and environmental permitting strategies and report preparation. * Assist in the development of NJDEP Division of Land Resources Protection permit applications (Waterfront Development, CAFRA, Flood Hazard Area, Coastal and Freshwater Wetlands). * Familiarity with permit development and compliance documentation in NYS including: Joint Permit Applications, NYSDEC Protection of Waters, Coastal Erosion Management, Freshwater/Tidal Wetlands Permits, Industrial SPDES and other environmental and related permits. * Familiarity with permit applications in NYC including: CEQR, NYC Dept City Planning Waterfront Revitalization Program, NYC Landmark Preservation Commission NYC Parks and Recreation, DEP SWPPP approval process. * Define the level of environmental analysis needed including assessing and analyzing project impacts to identify permit requirements; and develop strategies to avoid or minimize impacts and permit requirements including constraints mapping. * Prepare and review technical sections of environmental impact statements (EIS), environmental assessments (EA), natural and cultural resource reports, and other environmental documents. * Prioritize tasks and deliver multiple projects concurrently with oversight from senior staff. * Perform other duties as needed. Position Summary: This is an excellent opportunity to apply your expertise as a Senior Stormwater Engineer, contributing to permitting, design, and construction projects involving solid waste management facilities, environmental regulatory analysis, environmental monitoring and compliance, stormwater and environmental permitting, stormwater modeling, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan development, and the preparation of specifications and reports (Word/Excel). The position will serve as a senior engineer and technical design lead for stormwater projects. For the ideal candidate, this position will combine project work and some business development. Essential Job Functions: The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions. * Prepare engineering plans and specifications * Perform engineering design calculations * Analyze reports, maps, drawings, environmental data, and aerial photographs * Manage projects and work as stormwater lead on project teams * Interact with clients and regulatory agencies as the project manager and client representative * Mentor/lead staff as a stormwater lead * Present data to clients and/or regulatory agencies to support project advancement * Present technical experience at regional and national conferences * Provide internal QA review on stormwater design calculations/projects prepared by other staff * Work with local municipalities and private corporations in environmental consulting field Required Qualifications: * 8 to 15+ years of experience in stormwater design, land development projects, and stormwater permitting. * Strong verbal and written communication skills. * Solid organizational and time management skills. * Self-disciplined/motivated individual who also works well in a team environment. * Knowledge of New York and New Jersey guidelines for soil erosion and sediment controls. * Knowledge of State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) Multi Sector General Permit for Stormwater Discharges from Industrial Activity * A positive attitude to mentor and oversee staff. * Ability to organize and prioritize multiple project tasks and respond to client's requests and schedule. * Unwavering personal integrity. * Proven track record in generating work, growing new clients, developing new client relationships. * Develop strategy for business development and council senior management. Preferred Qualifications: * Knowledge of environmental regulations a plus. * Professional Engineer license a plus but not required. Physical Requirements: * Regularly required to sit and work at a computer for extended periods; occasional standing and walking within the office environment. * Occasionally required to lift/move up to 10 lbs., with infrequent lifting of up to 25 lbs. * Requires use of hands for typing, handling materials, and operating office equipment; vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. * May occasionally travel to field sites (approximately 10-30% of the time), which can involve walking on uneven terrain and slopes up to 2:1 or 3:1 grade. * When in the field, must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator if required, and may need to meet medical clearance standards based on assignment.
