This specialist role assists the cardiologist and/or radiologist in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab during invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures. The Technologist actively participates in monitoring, scrubbing, and circulating duties, ensuring a safe environment for the patient, and operating equipment while strictly adhering to ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) radiation safety standards. Job Responsibilities Assist the cardiologist or radiologist directly in the Cath Lab during the performance of all invasive cardiac and peripheral vascular procedures. Participate actively in all three primary procedural roles: monitoring, scrubbing, and circulating duties. Operate radiographic and cardiovascular equipment safely and effectively, maintaining strict adherence to ALARA standards throughout all procedures. Maintain current knowledge of new procedures, equipment, and exam protocols to ensure the highest level of care and technical proficiency. Assist with maintaining supply inventory at acceptable levels to ensure the lab is fully stocked and operational for scheduled and emergency procedures. Ensure a safe and sterile environment for the patient throughout the entire procedure within the scope of the technologist's practice. Requirements Education Completion of an accredited school of Cardiovascular Technology is required. Experience Prior experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Lab or Interventional Radiology setting is highly preferred (implied by the job title). Certifications/Licenses Required Certifications (one of the following): Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) / Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as a Healthcare Provider (American Heart Association) is required. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification as a Healthcare Provider (American Heart Association) is required. Duties and Responsibilities: Provides medical services at the scope and level of a Laboratory Technician to preserve the health of employees and client personnel. Able to identify nosocomial infections and differentiate these from community-acquired infections. Perform proper patient identification procedures. Perform phlebotomy, to include pediatric phlebotomy and testing, and collect and handle blood specimens. Perform blunt abdominal trauma testing, urine drug screening, pulmonary function tests, hearing tests and working with audiogram, and vision and color testing. Perform routine laboratory procedures, including quality control and accurately enter results. Follow all laboratory (lab) protocols and federal lab laws. Set up and operate lab and perform equipment maintenance in preparation for specimen testing or processing, to include running lab devices and performing calibration, sample processing, and sample labeling. Performs duties in a safe manner and follows the corporate safety policy. Records and maintains patient information in accordance with standard protocols, and the Privacy Act. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Responds to a variety of inquiries of varying complexity by using knowledge and an understanding of established policies, procedures, and practices for safeguarding information (HIPAA, PHI, PII), including maintaining confidentiality of all company proprietary information. Maintains professionalism, ethical standards, discretion, candor, privacy and confidentiality of all company proprietary information, meetings, communication, and documents, including implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization. Qualifications: Graduated from an accredited school for Laboratory Technician. Certification by ASCP, AMT or higher. Skilled at obtaining body fluids, tissues, and other specimens. Experience performing accurate laboratory testing and recognizes the importance of proper test selection and causes of discrepant results. Knowledge of testing principles related to routine testing. Knowledge of specimen handling, collection techniques, and general lab workflow. Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills. Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required. Must be able to perform duties in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations. Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities. All Healthcare Providers and medical support staff must have a recent clinical experience in patient care for a least 6 months out of the past year. Must have a valid U.S. Driver's License. Must have a valid U.S. Passport with no less than 6 months remaining before expiration. Shall be proficient in the ability to speak, write, and communicate in English. Assisting with Procedures: Assist cardiologists and other physicians during cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, stent placement, electrophysiological studies, and other interventional procedures. Handle sterile instruments, such as catheters, balloons, and stents, during the procedure, ensuring correct placement and maintaining a sterile field. Operate X-ray fluoroscopy equipment and assist with imaging during diagnostic tests, such as angiograms, to visualize blood vessels and heart function. Monitor vital signs (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) during procedures and report any abnormalities to the physician. Administer medications under physician direction, such as sedatives or contrast dyes, ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure. Post-Procedure Care: Monitor patients for immediate complications after the procedure, such as bleeding, changes in vital signs, or signs of infection. Assist in transferring the patient from the procedure table to recovery, ensuring comfort and safety during transport. Help with patient recovery by monitoring cardiac rhythm, vital signs, and the insertion site for any signs of complications, particularly bleeding or hematoma formation. Provide post-procedure instructions to patients and their families, including advice on post-operative care, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments. Equipment Management and Maintenance: Maintain, clean, and sterilize the cath lab equipment and instruments, ensuring they are functioning properly and ready for the next procedure. Regularly check and troubleshoot cath lab machinery, including X-ray equipment, electrocardiograms (EKG), defibrillators, and patient monitors. Order necessary supplies, manage inventory, and ensure all materials needed for procedures are available and in good condition. Assist in the calibration of equipment to ensure accurate diagnostic results. Patient Monitoring and Safety: Continuously monitor the patient's vital signs during the procedure, ensuring optimal conditions for the intervention. Ensure proper documentation of patient information, procedures, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR) or procedure logs. Adhere to safety and infection control protocols, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), sterile techniques, and radiation safety protocols to minimize exposure to patients and staff. Monitor the catheter insertion site for signs of complications such as infection or clot formation. Collaboration with Medical Team: Work closely with cardiologists, radiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care for patients undergoing catheterization or other cardiac procedures. Attend pre-procedure meetings to review patient conditions and provide input on the appropriate procedure. Assist in evaluating the results of diagnostic tests, including angiograms, to support the development of treatment plans.
