The Nursing Instructor/Skills Lab Coordinator of the Clinical Skills Lab has an overall responsibility for the coordination of all clinical lab activities. Additionally, the Instructor is responsible for both classroom and clinical instruction. This includes but is not limited to classroom presentations, giving and grading examinations, advising students in academic choices, supervising clinical experiences, planning and participating in lab and simulation, and evaluating students using tools specific to nursing. Position Overview The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the efficient and effective management of laboratory operations and personnel within an assigned laboratory area. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Supervisor performs advanced medical technology functions and serves as a technical expert in complex testing areas. Key Responsibilities Plan, coordinate, and direct daily testing activities to ensure adequate staffing, supplies, and reagents. Supervise laboratory personnel performing routine and specialized technical procedures. Assist with onboarding, training, and ongoing development of laboratory staff. Evaluate employee performance, ensure staff competency, and recommend personnel actions including hiring, promotions, and corrective actions. Monitor productivity, manage supply ordering and equipment needs, and assist with budget oversight for the assigned laboratory area. Implement and monitor quality control programs to ensure reliable testing, proper equipment function, and regulatory compliance. Maintain documentation and records required for inspections and accreditation. Participate in the development and implementation of new testing procedures and techniques. Prepare work schedules and assign daily workloads to ensure timely test reporting. Provide advanced troubleshooting, problem-solving, and technical guidance to staff. Ensure inspection readiness and oversight of laboratory procedure manuals. Perform the duties of a Medical Technologist III in addition to supervisory responsibilities. Serve as a technical specialist and subject matter expert in complex testing areas. Qualifications Education & Experience Required: Bachelor's degree, preferably in Medical Technology or a natural science. Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Medical Technologist. Credential/Licensure Required: Current licensure in the state of Tennessee as a Laboratory Supervisor. Completion of an AMA-approved Medical Technology program. Registered Medical Technologist with the state of Tennessee. Certification or licensure as a Special Analyst, if required for certain laboratory areas. Preferred: Registry as a Medical Technologist through the ASCP Board of Registry. Skills & Abilities Required: Thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, practices, and regulatory standards. Strong understanding of laboratory safety and infection control procedures, including handling hazardous chemicals. Ability to interpret complex technical materials and reports. Effective communication skills with staff, leadership, physicians, patients, and caregivers. Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop individuals and teams. Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and initiative. Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills. Appropriate state licensure and/or certificate, where applicable, required. Must possess High Complexity Testing competencies required by Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), CLIA, and other applicable regulatory and accrediting bodies required. Must possess demonstrated advanced clinical laboratory knowledge and competency so as to provide testing quality control, as well as proficient training and guidance to newer staff. Must possess demonstrated proficiency of complex equipment and reagent maintenance, for troubleshooting, and problem resolution. Advanced proficiency must be demonstrated with all equipment at the assigned location. Must possess demonstrated understanding of, and experience with, proficiency survey sample testing. Qualified technician performs patient specimen analysis for diagnostic purposes, under the direct and indirect supervision of a medical technologist. Enters all results into the computer system. Brings panic value test results to the attention of the appropriate personnel. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing various equipment and work areas in the laboratory. Maintains laboratory inventory. Under the supervision of a medical technologist, performs high-complexity testing. Regulatory Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent.
