Metro Nashville company history timeline

1806

In 1806, Nashville was incorporated as a city and became the county seat of Davidson County, Tennessee.

1843

In 1843, the city was named the permanent capital of the state of Tennessee.

1860

By 1860 Nashville was a prosperous city, soon to be devastated by the Civil War.

1862

In February 1862, Nashville became the first state capital to fall to Union troops.

1962

They voted to create the first fully unified government in the United States with the passage of the Metro Charter on June 28, 1962.

On June 28, 1962, the voters of the city and the county voted in favor of the creation of Metropolitan government.

Since 1962, the Charter has been amended for several housekeeping measures, but there has not been a major, comprehensive revision of the Charter since its adoption.

1963

Beverly Briley was elected the first mayor in November and Metropolitan government was implemented on April 1, 1963 with the swearing in of Mayor Briley & the newly elected Metropolitan Council.

1995

Nissan Stadium (formerly LP Field and Adelphia Coliseum) was built after the National Football League's (NFL) Houston Oilers agreed to move to the city in 1995.
