A Brief Overview Allied health professional working as a part of the Cardiothoracic team and/or OR team delivering surgical care by assisting physicians and maintaining a sterile field during surgical procedure through consistent application of aseptic techniques. Essential Functions Performs preoperative preparation • Reviews physician preference list before operative procedure and assembles supplies and equipment needed for procedure. • Opens sterile supplies using sterile technique. • Properly identifies and handles medication passed onto the sterile field under the direction of the RN • Communicates clearly and collaborates with other members of the perioperative team to prepare operative procedure Functions as scrub person during operative procedure by preparing, monitoring, and maintaining a sterile field. • Completing surgical scrub according to policy. • Wears appropriate PPE and follows standard and policy for attire in the OR. • Organizes and maintains sterile instruments and supplies in organized manner. • Performs counts according to facility policy and procedure during procedure and hand-off situations. • Assisting with draping sterile field according to standard. • Watches progress of the operation and anticipates needs of team members. Performs postoperative tasks and clean up • Disassembles instruments and equipment, assures proper handling of contaminated instruments • Assists with cleaning room and preparation for subsequent procedure • Assists with restocking and proper setup of Operating Room Applies base knowledge and principles during operative procedure (AST and/or AORN Guidelines). • Demonstrates surgical and clinical competencies for CT surgery and other designated specialties • Principles of heart room, cardiac cath lab, ECMO, heart transplant, and ventricular assist device • Base knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care. • Principles of computer science, electricity and robotics as needed for surgical patient care. • Principles of sterile technique during the surgical procedure. Performs clinical preceptor role for specialty service(s) and follows core competency outline. • Demonstrates proper use and care of equipment and supplies. • Provides “hands-on” experience with all pieces of equipment and instrumentation. • Teaches department standards for performance, patient care, safety, and service. • Assists with appropriate documentation of orientation program via skills checklist • Continually reviews and evaluates the individuals' practical application of knowledge and skills, providing additional training as required • Documents ongoing process of orienting staff and assists in mentoring. Demonstrates collegiality and leadership qualities. • Demonstrates awareness of, and participation in performance improvement activities. • Assists Supervisors with supply/inventory, instrument management, preference cards, and equipment • Provides a minimum of two (2) in-services per year in area of specialty or other area as requested Assists Registered Nurse as directed Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job. Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section Education Qualifications Completion of a formal ST program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, or military Required Experience Qualifications 2+ years of current surgical technologist experience Required and Must meet the criteria of Surgical Technologist I Required and Advanced knowledge of at least 1 advanced/complex surgical specialties (including but not limited to: Ortho, Neuro, Plastic, Eye, Pediatric, Cardiac) Required Skills and Abilities Skilled in promoting positive relations when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, or other customers. Requires working with multiple activities and dividing time and attention to a variety of demands and working irregular hours. Ability to work in a team environment and solve problems in a diplomatic fashion.
