We are tasked with staffing The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) with Surgical Technologist. The Surgical Technologist are expected to perform the following:
Shall share knowledge by training students, new orienteers and cross-trained experienced Surgical Technicians.
The Contractor shall complete daily evaluation reports as needed by supervisor.
Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery, and assisting with post-operative dressings.
Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies.
Maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient either by active participation in the cleaning of clinical spaces, operating rooms, and medical equipment, or by guiding other personnel in the environmental maintenance.
The Contractor shall prepare one-self before entry into the operating room.
Prepare a patient for surgery; arrange Operating Room (OR) equipment, instruments, and supplies accord to the preference of the surgeons and nurses.
Set-up and test equipment, and monitors devices prior to scheduled surgical procedure.
Contractor shall be conscientious, orderly, and emotionally stable to handle the demands of surgeons.
Respond quickly and have knowledge of various operating room procedures.
Shall function as an integral member of the healthcare team, working in coordination with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other authorized medical personnel to provide comprehensive support before, during, and after surgical procedures
Assist the surgeon with, sponging or suctioning the operative site, prepare suture material, dispense appropriate fluids and drugs, and prepare specimens for subsequent pathologic analysis.
Clean, wash, decontaminates, and prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization; conducts sterilization by appropriate method; monitor and document sterilizer function; provide pick-up and delivery for Sterile Processing Department (SPD) to activities within the medical facility.
Count (with the circulating nurse) sponges, needles and instruments used during surgery and assist in clean-up of operating room using standard MTF policies
Apply dressings and prepare the OR for the next case.
Participate in staff meetings and conferences as scheduled by the department representative of the worksite.
Have a working knowledge of the surgical scheduling system (S3) to be able to schedule surgeries and pull reports when needed.
Respond to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) situations, acute respiratory problems and other emergencies as needed.
Requirements:
Degree: Certificate
Education: Graduate from Surgical Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or completion of a formal training program provided by any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, or Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists or operating room technicians.
Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Basic Life Support (BLS Provider), Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or certified as a Tech-in-Surgery (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or possess a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) certification as a surgical technician and/or operating room technician.
